Don't bother with the DS version of Yoshi's Island, it's harder then the SNES version and you not only do the morph switching, but you also switch between using Baby Mario, Baby Peach and Baby Donkey Kong, all with different abilities. Game is ruthless sometimes.

No, in fact when they tweaked it and released it for GBA it was as good as ever. Plus the DS sequel was excellent.
At least you didn't say it was difficult.

I think it's a good game, but I think SMW is much more enjoyable. Actually, the only main mario games I didn't care for were Yoshi's Story and Sunshine...
I thought the DS game was a sequel? Or did they re-release the original one, as well as a sequel on the DS. tbh, i've lost count of how many mario games there have been in recent years.

I heard a rumor that Miyamoto made SMB 2 (JP) really difficult cause he was going through depression.
BTW, i'm playing said Mario as we speak! I've never played and I see why people have a strong distaste for it: IT'S EFFIN HARD!!! This game defines Nintendo Hard with elements of platform hell and possibly Guide Dang It. I mean there's a lot of trial and error in this game and it CAN'T be beat on 3 lives, you have to do the unlimited lives trick to really beat this game.

OK, the level designs are really all over the map with this game. Just finished World 3, which was the jungle-themed levels, and those were actually really fucking cool. Lots of parallax scrolling, faux-lighting effects (sunbeams through the vines and on the water), loved the homage to DK Jr. with the monkeys on the vines. There were just some really, really piss annoying levels in World 2. Still hate the overuse of gimmicky transformation sequences. Same thing with the overuse of Bonus Challenge games. They just feel like they interrupt and artificially lengthen what would otherwise be a solid, well-realized game. Sometimes less is more.
I played the import version right when it came out almost 15/16 years ago (!!!), so a lot of this is stuff I didn't recall. It also never got that kind of repeated play that I certainly threw down with SMW...

Truthfully, is it more wrong to call Yoshi's Island a sequel to SMW ~OR~ Super Mario Brothers 2 a sequel to SMB1?

For me, no game of this type did. I played the SHIT out of SMW. And there was so much to do in it, plus a consistently high level of quality throughout in every category.

It's really, firmly, permanently nestled in my Top 5 of all time. Probably my favorite non-SF title ever. To think that so much gameplay and aesthetic beauty was packed into a 4Mbit cartridge.

I'd say US SMB2 is closer to the other entries in the series than Yoshi's Island is. You still have the magic mushrooms to add health (albeit enough to take 4 hits before losing a life) and leap on enemies (which you have to before you can throw them) as your primary form of attack. There's more of a focus on climbing as opposed to SMB1, where you really only did it in bonus stages.
I enjoy(ed) Yoshi's Island for what it was; I don't think it's as comparable to the rest of the series as some make it out to be. All I know is, it took 5 years for it to come out after the previous console Mario title, which was an *eternity* compared to the NES days. By that time, I just wanted some semblence of Mario mechanics/characters in the game, and it delivered just fine.

Great game. Not as good as classic Marios or SMW, but then what is? Still an excellent Nintendo platformer. I agree that they could have removed some of the collecting element, however. That's why I don't think I'll go through the DS version as the extra transformations are taking it beyond standard platforming fare and into too much puzzle solving.
I'd rather play Super Princess Peach on the DS though. It's a fun platformer, easily overlooked due to its cuteness, that doesn't completely depend on touch controls like most of the DS library.

I really enjoyed this game (SMB 2 US), and can still go back and play it. Boss fights felt like a fight, not a run and pray jump on a head *yawn* over done series of events.

That's a good point but I would consider SMB2US to be closer to a "mario'ish" title than SMW2. Again...why they put the name Super Mario World on that title is beyond me. I agree SMB2US is confusing as being labeled a Mario title but it was fun and closer to a SM title than SMW2.
I have to say I was quite the Mario purist....I didn't like Yoshi (and in many ways still do not). I despised the fact that you were forced to use him to access certain parts of the game. other than that...SMW was epic for its time.
Although I hate Mario64 (shit controls) it too was huge in scope for its time. Those two games (SMW and M64) haven't really been recreated since. Sure, there have been large scale Mario titles but nothing like those two.
Lastly....the real SMB2 was brutal...fucks sake that game is hard. I remember playing it for the first time on All Stars and it handing me my ass...to this day I have not finished it without cheating...it is brilliant but devious.
