Is it still a good platform game? Yes, when it chooses to be.

I cannot stand all of the transformations (Baby Mario, the helicopter, the choo-choo, the digger tank, etc). There's also way too much backtracking in the level designs too.

SMW > SMB3 > SMB1 > YI >SMB2(US).

I never thought it was all that, either. It never 'wowed' me like other Mario games, y'know?

But then again, it really ain't a Mario game (people who call it Super Mario World 2 are stupid).

Easily the best boss fights of any Mario game, though.

You guys hate Mario 2 US?

WTF, fellas. Miyamoto had a lot more to do with making that game than he did with SMB2 JP.

Which I can go on the record as saying that it is the shittiest fucking mario game ever.

Transformations/baby mario sucked indeed...but that trippy Mario 2 vibe YI had won me over...I like Shyguys more than goombas, I also like not having a time limit and getting to explore instead of just running to the end of the level.

But that's just me.

I can feel the strange aesthetics of the game, there's a lot of charm in the visuals for sure, but the level designs just plain aren't nearly as fun. Also, I really don't like the whole scorekeeping aspect of the game, as in, "Find all five of these, 20 of these, etc." It really forecasted a lot of what would become irritating as hell about platformers as the decade wore on. In Mario games, the items were simply there to be collected for fun, or to increase your lives, or not at all.

I'm also not a fan of the areas where you can't see the path, and then when you hop inside that space, the playable area 'appears', and then disappears as you move in and out. It's annoying as hell.

I could just play SMW and SMB3 for the rest of my life. So f'n good.

Yeah....collecting rubbish items like a fucking OCD case just pisses me off.
I would rather they just ramped up the difficulty to a point where finishing the level is an achievement in itself.

But going back to mario 2: As a kid going from Mario 1 , it was a big leap in coolness for me.
4 different characters, 4 styles of play....even NSMB wii is a step back from that shit. Can't even pick your character in that fucking game. :oh_no:

As for the aesthetics....if they make a new game for the wii, they should make it play like a classic mario game....but bring back the shit that made Mario 2 awesome: Vines, shyguys, giant carved out trees, ostriches and shit...I could go on but I'm drifting into Cool story bro territory atm.

Crash Bandicoot 2 is a great game.

That above comment was actually half-snark, half real love.
I think the first three legit Crash games (those made by Naughty Dog) were actually really, really good in terms of sheer gameplay. The aesthetics and character designs didn't set my world on fire, but they were fun as hell.

Some stages are tough, but that is a given.

Remember Super Mario world's secret star stage? I totally forgot what it is called but they are tough.

I beat that game YEARS ago.

Don't expect to complete this game 100% without putting any effort.

I felt the same way when I played it first way back when...but upon replay...it's definitely got some issues. I don't think it holds up as well as the others.

Collecting coins for 1up's was cool in 1989.

YI = Mario 64 > all

SMW is overrtated.

So much wrong in so few words

I wasn't a fan of SMW2 either, it looked ok but was a daft mix of pre-rendered, lovely sprites and superFX effects, and it didn't work too well. Baby mario was annoying, and the game annoyed me. I couldn't even be bothered to unlock the secrets and have played it only once and probably won't ever again.

smw forever.

Great game.

I remember seeing it in the back of somebody's van when they were selling off all their ex-rentals. It had already been claimed so I couldn't get that exact copy. Somewhere between this and my full completion of the game was where I managed to obtain it.

Then I remember wanting to get it for the DS, back in 2004 when DS' first came out. My mother and I ended up driving for 2 hours to this store which claimed to have it in stock, but turned out they confused it with another GBA title in the Mario Advance line.

A few days later I found another store which had it in stock, with a completely ruined box. At the time I didn't do online purchases (maybe because I was what, 16?) but I took it. I don't remember beating it a second time, but I'd like to.

I also checked out the DS version, which I liked, but apparently everyone hated.

I mostly remember the game for the art style. Also these things:

These things. Do not touch these things.

Great game. The N64 one is much stranger though (and less fun). It looks like the designers were on a mushroom trip.

I despised it back when it was new...I hate it still.

Although beautiful in design, the game just plain sucks. I think my largest problem is that they called it Super Mario World 2...when I read the announcement of the game, I was beyond excited (note the word read...that was still in the glory days of gaming mags...*sigh*). SMW was/is my favorite of the entire franchise, another title in the franchise was sure to be epic...right?

When I finally got my hands on it and realized what it was...I don't think the term "let down" really applied...I was devastated. Had it had been called anything but that name...I might have simply overlooked it as a shit, annoying title...but figuring they put that sacred name on it made it 1000 times worse.

I returned it to the rental place some 15+ years ago and haven't picked it up since.

I also like the crayon motif.

Too hard of a game though, and baby mario is annoying.
