Wtf..this is happening in America? If they can take away soda, what else can they take? When will this bullshit stop?
Soda fans in San Francisco may be disappointed to find their favorite Pepsi and Coke products replaced with healthier 100 percent juice and soy milk in vending machines on city property.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order in April banning the sugary beverages, as well as sports drinks and artificially sweetened water, but the ban has only recently begun to take effect. Instead of soda, vending machines can only carry water, diet soda, 100 percent fruit juice and soy or rice milk. Under the new regulations, diet soda can also comprise only 25 percent of the beverages offered and juice choices cannot contain any added sweeteners.

While the executive order applies to any new vending machines, vending machines already under contract will be exempt.

"There's a direct link between what people eat and drink and the obesity and health care crises in this country," Newsom spokesman Tony Winnicker said to the San Francisco Chronicle. "It's entirely appropriate and not at all intrusive for city government to take steps to discourage the sale of sugary sodas on city property."

The ban is part of the administration’s attempt to improve the health of San Franciscans. Other methods reducing the city’s obesity rate include the Shape Up San Francisco exercise program and nine planned Sunday Streets events, in which various roads around the city will be closed to promote outdoor activities.

"This is not about the soda police or a crackdown on soda," Winnicker said to the Chronicle. "People absolutely remain free to choose to drink unhealthy sugary sodas anywhere they want."

Awesome news and I support this fully...

No one is taking anyone's Soda away and I really don't think it's some oppressive move on the part of the city... its forward thinking and progress, something the SF Bay Area has always tried to do.

Its really ridiculous actually how so many stores have candy stands and drink coolers in their check- out aisles and how every gas station is like a junk food oasis.

I went to Micheal's arts and crafts last week to get some drawing supplies and was surprised and a little disgusted to see well stocked candy and drink coolers on all the check out aisle heads.

Go to foreign countries where they do not have problems with obesity like we do and you dont see the level of accessibility that people are used to here.

I live over in Oakland and will be interested to see if we follow suit on this one...

I was expecting something much worse. If the city wants to do that, I say go for it.

Now if only they could make caffinated soy milk, we could all win.

they could do what my office does.
my office has a fridge where they sell
snacks and cokes for cheaper than the vending machines.

on the flip side,
most of the people in my office are on the heavier side.

guess I need to tell them about the coffee and cigarettes diet.

But Coke is it! Pepsi is the choice of the new generation! Brawndo has what plants need!

Since it involves city property, who cares...

Yeah, this. Sodas have already been removed from vending machines in a lot of schools and other places. Who cares? Nobody is stopping you from buying one somewhere else if you absolutely have to have one.

Simple, vote them out of office.

But I already know that I couldn't live in SF anyways. So I'm quite sure the nutbags there will appreciate this move.

Hell I couldn't live anyplace in CA. Hopefully it falls into the ocean someday.

Please pray to Crom that when CA begins to sink that I'll have enough time to grab my guns and flee the state. I promise to drive straight back to MO.

He knows they wouldn't have him and he's just trying to turn it around so he can feel better about himself.

You'll have time. They will have taken all your guns by then, as I don't expect it to sink anytime soon. God wants George Lucas to finish tweaking Star Wars for Blu-ray.

Freedom of choice. If someone, for example smokes,it's their choice to do so.Just like playing older games when there are newer ones out. If you take away their (people's) freedom in the land of the free then, what the hell do you have left?

I support it mostly.

I'd more often recommend people drink soda with natural sugar rather than "diet sodas" though. They allow artificial sweeteners in soda but not artificially sweetened water? Interesting.

@Mrandersonjr: Well, all those smokers and food junkies have taken away MY freedom of choice. I'd like to choose not to pay for their medical bills, etc, but that is not a privilege this country will let me keep. As NeoSneth said before you posted. . . you should have got that message sooner. You need a good lesson about "freedom" of choice.

What freedom's exactly is the city of SF denying it's people? Do you seriously believe limiting the number of vending machines selling soda is somehow infringing upon peoples rights or are you trying to be sarcastic?

To piggyback on your point, if someone does not smoke they have a right to tell others they cant smoke in their house... no one said they cant smoke period, just that they have to walk their ass outside to do it.

Awesome, how about banning fast food within the city? (McDonalds, BK, Wendys, KFC, etc)
