I never understood Sonic 2's popularity. A lot of people really seem to single it out as something special, but even when I played in circa 1992, I found the level design to be even more unvaried than Sonic 1.
Sonic 1, even though it had six levels, a lack of a spindash and half of the memory, seemed to mix it up more with it's level design.
Sonic 2 just felt like it swapped the wallpaper on each level.
I just read an interview with Yuji Naka on 1up.com and he claims Sonic 2 was heavily focus tested for maximum mediocrity, so this explains a lot.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is cool, but overkill.
Sonic 1 is the best game. Even though it, too, was designed by committee, right down to the colour of sonic's shoe, it was simply the most fun of them all. No shitty friends, no excess. Just pure fun,
