2004, one of the best years for video games thanks to Treasure

Gradius V, for me, is the pinnacle of their games. The fact that they could inject that much life and beauty into a franchise that, frankly, had become unbelievably stale is definitely a testament to their talent. It's not only the best Gradius title, but it's arguably the best horizontal shooter ever released.

I felt the same way back when it came out. Played the damn thing for a month straight, everyday after school, with the surround sound on and everything. The first time I saw the opening to the second stage, and I saw the future Vic Viper come right beside the VV you're playing and say 'we need to work together to defeat this'...man, I just lost my shit and started yelling. What an awesome moment.

Beautiful game, beautiful music, everything.

A few years pass and I start seeing how...sterile the game looks compared to its predecessors. I know Tak agrees with me on this, how 'bland' and 'metallic' a lot of the stages look. Still a great game.

On a sidenote, I pre-ordered GV and got the Breakdown DVD, where I saw footage of Salamander for the first time, which made me decide right then and there I'd start buying import games. Three months later I decide to join this forum solely for that purpose and here I am.

So you guys all have Gradius V to thank for me being here. Otherwise I would have never been.

edit:
Equally interesting would be trying to pick their WORST game.

Never played it myself but I can only imagine Light Crusader as the only acceptable choice. I heard Ronald's McDonaldland Adventure or whatever was an ok-ish platformer.

I forgot about Astro Boy. I bought that last year for a really cheap price, like ten bucks. Definitely one of the better gaming purchases I ever made.

Guardian Heroes is one of my all time favorite games. The multiplayer modes are so much fun.:vik:

Rakugaki Showtime!

Of those games listed, I'd go with Guardian Heroes. Talk about putting new life into a stale genre. Side scrolling beat 'em ups were dead before that game came along.

I don't know about that. Guardians/Denjin Makai II (1995) totally upped the ante in terms of play style when beat 'em ups were dead. And really, beat 'em ups remained "dead' even after Guardian Heroes..

EDIT: I guess I have a bit of a negative bias against the game. I love beat 'em ups, Treasure and the Saturn..but GH never blew me away. Maybe I just need to keep playing it. BTW...Treasure's Yu Yu Hakusho was the Guardian Heroes engine/frame work in 1994...it's a weird experience playing that game.

This made me cry, all he wanted was his son yet he couldn't replicate him

"Father. Why do humans fight? And why does it never end?"
"Because it's the fate of humanity, Tobio...A flame of passion exists in us that can even brighten the darkest future.

But this flame can also burn out, leaving an empty void.
Humans are lost.
Alone, they struggle in the darkness, and hurt themselves in fear.
They don't know where they came from or where they're going.

...They need a friend. A friend who can help support them in this darkness.
So I've decided to create a guide for us. Stronger than any man or robot."

"What's its name?"

"Astro...That's his name. A star to shine above us to guide us all. He will stand by our side at all times. No matter how weak we become. He'll always be with you."

"OK, dad! I'll be with Astro wherever I go! I will be with him wherever I go."

"Tobio, can you see him? It's Astro. Astro's here. Astro, you must exceed the limitations that humans cannot! You must go beyond nationality, ethnicity, philosophy and religion, starvation and poverty, and war! Exceed these limitations created by man! You must fly high! Higher than any human has ever flown before! To reach for the future that no human has been able to so far!"

What about Bangai-oh?!? (on DC) Loved everything about that game.

Does Super Castlevania IV count? Loved everything about that game too!

Those and Ikaruga are my favorites.... And Mischief Makers... Didn't play the Saturn Treasure games though.

And Sin and Punishment is super dope. Like, every Treasure game is my favorite Treasure game.

I guess I'd pick Super CV4 though if it came down to it. Then Bangai-oh. Then Mischief Makers (lol). Then Ikaruga. Then the rest.

I still would love to see Treasure make a real sequel or remake of Guardian Heroes. I didn't care much for the GBA game since I played the hell out of my friend's imported Saturn version. I wish the game didn't cost so damn much because I'd love to play through the game in English. My friend was insane with Randy and I loved Serena because she could do a little of everything.

Considering how Beat em' Ups have been doing on Live, Guardian Heroes would be perfect for it. Just sucks because I know they'll NEVER do it.

On the strenth. Lets not open that jar of pickles, m'kay? Jesus, every K game a future treasure member worked on. . .it boggles the mind. Does tweeking the controls on Silpheed PS2 count then? Depending on where we draw the line, there are many more 'Treasure' games than those that sport the Logo.

I seriously cannot decide which game is best off that list. I own and love every single one of them except for Sin and Punishment. I sadly never played that game. And I don't own a Wii nor do I have any intention of ever owning one... fuck.

From what I played of it on the Wii, S&P is pretty flippin' amazing.

I just dug out one of my two old N64s and my import copy of the original S and P. And then I took an hour to sort through about a dozen boxes and duffel bags to find my converter (I had some idea but not sure as to where in the hell I put that thing when I moved here two years ago).

And now I'm playing through Sin and Punishment again, and it is glorious. That's my pick.

I actually picked up a goddamn Wii again for the sequel.

Ikaruga, but not by a long shot.

I am a big fan of Alien Soldier as well, and have a lot of fun with Gunstar and Dynamite Heady.

Sin and Punishment was a fantastic game, and I can't wait until Sunday. But there is something special about Ikaruga which beats out the rest for me.

Alien Soldier is goddamned amazing. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it...

And this thread reminds me that I still need to get the GBA Astro Boy. Dang.

soldier is another level of difficult.
im convinced very few people even have it in them to figure out the controls, and thats why its left out of most discussions.
im usually the first person to endorse the gratuitous overcomplification of controls, but Soldier borders on the obscene.
theoretically, its my favorite Treasure game.

The learning curve for AS is steep, but once you 'get' it, it's glorious. A magnificent way for Treasure to leave the Genesis, a real love-letter.

Soldier's controls aren't too complicated and feel very comfortable once you get to spend some time perfecting your playthrough.

A lot of the game requires similar types of commands to succeed and you'll find yourself mastering things in no time. If you can beat the (fucking incredble) Tiger dude on top of the airplane, you know enough about the controls and you can beat the game.

Trial and error after that.

There are sports games that I feel have more difficult controls.

Anyways, Alien Soldier is an arcade game that could only exist on a console, and that makes it awesome.

So how is the new S&P? I don't trust reviews generally, and especially not for an "enthusiast" game. Is it worth $50?

I think that's the point 'Sage and Kid Aphex are making (and one I agree with): the controls are crazily complicated until they aren't. The game has a really steep learning curve, and there's a lot more nuance to the controls than there are in other side scrolling shooters. I don't know if I'd call it difficult, but it's complex and hard to grasp. It's for die-hard shooting fans only, that's for sure.

(I haven't beaten the Tiger dude on the plane, by the way. :emb:)

Anyway. I'm with Ghost Dog. Who's playing this? Is it good? How good?

Alien Soldier followed by Gunstar Heroes.

Sadly best I can do is get to 7 force Kaede in alien soldier

p.s. G rev also worked on Gradius V so it's not all Treasure.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that even though they ARE complex controls, they clicked and felt pretty natural, as far as 2D gaming goes. Instead of spreading controls over 6 buttons, they used the three available on the standard pad very well.

AS could have had the same controls spread over the six button pad and I would have probably been frustrated with it.

The one thing I would change would be using the mode button as a toggle for fixed and free shooting. But switching into the mode with :B: is fine.

I was gonna pass on this and wait till it dropped to $20, but wanted to support treasure so I picked it up.

Graphics are excellent. Controls cramp up your hands with the classic controller. I've only played a little bit of the original though. I'll try it later with the Mote and Nunchuck.

Challenging game, even on easy, but not impossible.

Definitely get it if you're a fan of rail shooters.

I didn't get my poster with my pre-order, only the $5 card.
