2004, one of the best years for video games thanks to Treasure
I felt the same way back when it came out. Played the damn thing for a month straight, everyday after school, with the surround sound on and everything. The first time I saw the opening to the second stage, and I saw the future Vic Viper come right beside the VV you're playing and say 'we need to work together to defeat this'...man, I just lost my shit and started yelling. What an awesome moment.
Beautiful game, beautiful music, everything.
A few years pass and I start seeing how...sterile the game looks compared to its predecessors. I know Tak agrees with me on this, how 'bland' and 'metallic' a lot of the stages look. Still a great game.
On a sidenote, I pre-ordered GV and got the Breakdown DVD, where I saw footage of Salamander for the first time, which made me decide right then and there I'd start buying import games. Three months later I decide to join this forum solely for that purpose and here I am.
So you guys all have Gradius V to thank for me being here. Otherwise I would have never been.
edit:
Never played it myself but I can only imagine Light Crusader as the only acceptable choice. I heard Ronald's McDonaldland Adventure or whatever was an ok-ish platformer.
Gradius V, for me, is the pinnacle of their games. The fact that they could inject that much life and beauty into a franchise that, frankly, had become unbelievably stale is definitely a testament to their talent. It's not only the best Gradius title, but it's arguably the best horizontal shooter ever released.

Equally interesting would be trying to pick their WORST game.
