I didn't know people took their Kung Fu so seriously around here. But so far in this thread I've seen an Asian person say he didn't find it offensive and a bunch of white people saying they do.

this is true, but just because I'm not Chinese doesn't mean I can't take umbrage with this. Saying 'It's not my fight' isn't the answer.

It's on the offended culture to fight for their right to be respected. It's on other cultures to give that respect and acknowledgement.

I see your point and I don't think its a bad thing by any means. I just don't think there is any malicious intent in anyone involved with this movie nor is it worth getting too worked up over. Its not like this is going to raise an entire generation to disrespect Asian culture or anything.

I mean, if an Asian came over here and got McDonalds mixed with Wendy's or mistook my AR-15 for an M-16, I wouldn't get all hot and bothered about it.

I'm not offended and I was born on Kung Fu Island; lived in a small house on 36th Chamber Ave; attended Dim Mak boarding school for boys, and worked at an import/export furniture store called The Chinese Connection.

I agree that there is no malicious intent. I firmly believe that calling the movie 'The Karate Kid' is a marketing ploy and not at all intended to shit on Chinese culture or martial arts. And I think maybe the thread's content may not accurately reflect the actual degree of frustration being expressed by some here. A movie's title is HARDLY thing that shoudl be evoking anger about social and racial injustice.

It's just such an easily avoidable thing. Somebody in the studio had to have brought up the notion:

Consciescious (SP) Objector: Hey guys, there's no actual karate in this movie. It's kung fu. It's, you know, clearly Chinese.

Studio head: People are stupid and won't see it if we don't make it as plain as day to Joe Average moviegoeer that this is a remake of the Ralph Macchio/Pat Morita movie. And we are in this to make money.

Consciescious (SP) Objecter: Uh...okay, then!

Yeah, you can never underestimate Hollywood's ability to underestimate their audience. As if everyone knows what karate is but no one has ever heard of kung fu. And they can't capitalize on people's nostalgia if they call their remade 80's movie a different title.

When people are unable to find things to be nostalgic about anymore, I wonder if they will start pining for things that haven't happened yet.

This site is saturated in white-guilt.

I used to work with a Jewish person who didn't believe in the Holocaust. That doesn't mean that it makes sense for people who know him to think, "Well, he's JEWISH, he should know...so maybe the Nazis weren't so bad after all."

I know it's a shitty move to bring in Nazis as a comparison, but I actually did know this guy.

And @nruva: This has nothing to do with white guilt. I don't recall anything Chinese-related to feel white guilt about. It's not like the US ever occupied China and heaped abuse on them the way the Japanese did.

A Jewish Holocaust denier. There's a new one. :spock:

That whole notion always astounds me, anyway. It's one of the most well-documented events in modern history.

There was the Second Opium War, but we are kind of a footnote in that one.

The point is there is a person who could potentially have a reason to be offended by this but apparently doesn't care at all and meanwhile there are a few people who really have no reason to be offended who apparently are. I'd like to hear more opinions from people who are actually a part of Asian culture, not outsiders assuming they can speak for them. I'm sure some of their opinions would mirror yours exactly and maybe they'd be right, but it would carry a lot more weight from someone whos culture is being exploited for some movie, if thats what you want to call it at least.

The real point is that all oriental culture (if you can even call it that) is pretty much the same and inferior to the might of the British Empire.

God save the queen.

Little Bow Wow still looks like a little kid in this film. Does he even age?

Fuck this movie. Will Smith's kid is trash. Jackie Chan is doing retarded Hollywood movies for pay checks. You can call it Pumpkin Pie Kid and it will still suck.

Oh, A person. A person. Carry on, then.

If people want to feel a little white guilt about something, I don't think that is necessarily the most unhealthy thing in the world. But even at my most whiny liberal moments, my policy is to not feel any responsibility whatsoever for anything that happened before I was born. If I'm going to feel guilty about something, at the absolute bare minimum I have to be implicit through inaction or apathy or something, and usually it will take a lot more than that.

Yeah, I just blame it on England too.

Yeah, and there's that. England has always been a good catch-all.
