Also it was only this year that I watched Escape from New York for the first time.

I saw it for the first time this year too. What's the 'duf's stance on it? I was underwhelmed.

I watched Evangelion at the perfect time in my life, when I was 17. Since then I've probably re-watched the entire series five times.

I don't know if you'd like it. If you're uncomfortable around other people and don't know how to socialize and hate yourself and feel like you'll never meet other peoples' standards and have daddy issues, then you'd probably like it.

I watched it around the same age too. I thought it was pretty cool at the time, although nowadays I can't stand most of it. I blame it on that shitty movie with Reizilla and Shinji masturbating on an unconscious Asuka, although some of the dialog in the show was pretty cringe inducing, even the first time I saw it.

I don't know if I'll like it either, but I've been trying to watch all these "classic" anime shows that people talk about and I've never seen. Maybe I should just find a torrent of it. I'd borrow it, but I don't know anyone who owns it.
It has some cool parts, but really, you probably don't need to bother. If you've heard people talk about it a lot, then you've probably had most of it spoiled already.

If someone will let you borrow it, cool, but I wouldn't buy it.

and there is no resolution.

yes there is.
ultimately it's a coming-of-age story, and the first time you watch the ending you're gonna be pissed.

but every other time I've watched the ending? it's made me cry. I also stood up, clapped, and verbally said "Congratulations"...

Evangelion is possibly the most overrated pile of garbage that Japan's ever shat out.

Never seen a single episode of Evangelion, but now that I'm actually interested in watching it, it is apparently out of print.

I'd be surprised if you couldn't find it SOMEWHERE. And if it really is gone from every conceivable store, there'll be another release at some point.

Never played Ico.

Haven't watched The Wire (yet).

Haven't listened to the Beatles outside of whatever commercials, movie background music they play (or American Idol wannabe themed shows).

Probably a lot of other stuff I can't even think of but just don't care about because it time coems to experience it then it will happen. And if not, there is a ton of other popular shit to enjoy.

I've never seen any Star Wars.

Never played Grand Theft Auto.

I've never watched American Idol.

Those are three of hundreds.

I've never had Facebook/Myspace, but I suppose that doesn't really fit the thread topic.

the last episode of the series or the end of the last movie?

because the series just ends in some abstract existential(?) bullshit philosophical self indulgent crap.

the movie ends making you feel empty and dead.

I don't want to turn this into an Eva thread, but, as you said yourself, Eva isn't about the robots. It's about the characters. It's about psychology and philosophy. The robots are a means to an end. That's why the ending seems out of place, though it really isn't, if you're reading the latent content. Self-indulgent? Maybe, but what semi-autobiographical work isn't? The creator was going through major depressive disorder at the time, and this is shown in multiple characters. Yeah, Eva makes you feel like shit, and that's how you know you just watched a masterpiece. I hate to sound overly dramatic, but Eva opened my eyes to philosophy, made me much more inquisitive about "reality" and the world, and really, made me a smarter person.

By the way, the "idiot" thing was in jest.

I've never seen Survivor. There are a lot of must-see movies I haven't seen, though I've been catching up. I haven't seen the remake of Scarface or the Godfather series, for example. I just recently saw The Breakfast Club and Psycho. Last year, my friend got dumped by his girlfriend and wouldn't leave my house, so I rented Big Trouble in Little China and Escape from NY for the first time. I thought those were both great.

I get tired of hearing the "it's about the characters" defense whenever people complain about a show. The writers draw me into a show based on the situations they come up with for their show (Evangelion had humanity battling mysterious lifeforms to prevent the end of the world while a shadowy organization plotted something sinister. Lost had the mysterious island where crazy shit happens. etc) and when they are unable to satisfactorily resolve the situations they create, I'm told "you just didn't get it. The show was never about that. It was always about the characters."

I'm not directing this at you fakeXsound, I've just been seeing that phrase a lot recently, and I find it annoying.

You just reminded me I've never seen an episode of Lost. I think my defense of Eva is sound since the characters reflect, to a degree, what the creator was going through, but since I've never seen Lost, I can't really compare. As far as I can remember, I've only used the "it's about the characters" thing for Eva. If nothing else, you can't deny the existence of the character study genre, so the argument can apply at times.

i dont think that the fact that eva makes you feel like shit makes it a "masterpiece."

its by no means bad, but its not an experience im happy about.

if you let it, itll make you think, potentially about things and areas you dont want to. in that regard yeah its good, but i can't say i enjoyed it.

its hard for me to agree that eva is even strictly about the characters. imo theres very little development (if anything theres regression) and they all act in a very inhuman way (which id attribute at least partly to a cultural divide) but yeah, if you sit and watch it through, its very affective.

lost on the other hand, while i just started watching, as much as id like to know more about what the fuck is going on, the characters are at least interesting and develop.

Eh, both are shows I wouldn't recommend. They both had things I liked, but I have no desire to re-watch either show.

I guess what I'm trying to say is you don't need giant robots fighting monsters in a volcano for a character study.

I'm actually really glad that the budget ran out during Eva's run and that ending is the one we got, otherwise we may not have had the 'real' ending with the movie, End of Evangelion.

I've never seen a show work so well with a lack of budget...those long shots were genius. Rei and Asuka in the elevator, Shinji holding Tabris in Unit 01's hand...goddamn man. I love imagining how Shinji must be spazzing out in the cockpit while contemplating whether or not to squish him.

That scene went on way too long. It ended up having less of an impact than it should have simply because they dragged it out to pad the episodes length.
