It could only be worse if Watermelon was involved.

they have school on mlk day?
I thought that was a federal holiday.

regardless, if I had the opportunity to eat
fried chicken for lunch everday as a kid,
I'd show up to school even if I was sick.

There is nothing offensive about the meal. If they offer it that's fine however, WHAT THE FUCK ARE KIDS DOING AT SCHOOL ON MLK DAY????

If you read the article... It is today...

I agree, there is nothing wrong with those foods... But I think that it would be better done on a different day. It is good to have kids exposed to foods from different regions and ethnicities.

I never had collard greens until I was in my 20's. Good stuff. I also never had real fried chicken until I was in my late 20's.

Too bad the food will probably come out pretty crappy.

PS: My school used to change the names of foods for holiday themes. For instance, Minnestrone soup would be called misseltony soup around chrismas. I don't recommend changing collard greens to colored greens.

maybe MLKjr liked that meal.

This just seems like more "white man guilt."

I know it's today.... It's a federal holiday though. Eating typical southern or even "soul food" if you may on a day to commemorate a black man is fine by me, hell do it more often, it probably would take away the stereotype. But why the fuck are kids going to school on a Federal holiday?

I know why, because MLK day isn't taken seriously in some parts of America which is pretty fuckin sad. It's like "oh, MLK, the civil rights leader? We'll pass on that, but let's commemorate George Washington the father of our glorious nation yay".

It's like it doesn't have full status as a holiday. Just give the kids some collard greens and some chicken and call it a day(just not a holiday).

Some comments I read elsewhere put it nicely, who complains about serving food typical of a certain culture on a day celebrating that culture?

Nobody complains about serving tacos on Cinco De Mayo or corned beef and cabbage on St. Patricks Day.

Grape drAnk?

Fixed.

Seriously, I'm highly considering going to The Shark Bar on the Upper West Side this weekend for some soul food. Anyone visiting NYC from the south has got to try it out.

That meal sounds great... We didn't have anything even close to that in our lunch rooms. Most diverse thing we ever got were those octagon-shaped "Mexican" pizzas... I would of killed for some soul food at school.
