For all the kid of funny hate at Tarantino (I mean, who cares?), you can probably credit his throwback movies for how a movie like this gets funded and greenlit.

This movie also reminded me of BAADASSSSS!, which was about Melvin Van Peebles' struggle to make the first blaxploitation film, "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song"

It was made by his son Mario, and is worth checking out if you're into this sort of thing. I regretted missing it in theater (it was here for a week, and on the Thursday before it was pulled I almost went to see it, but was talked out of it only to see it was gone the next day :mad:

), but eventually caught it on Netflix.

[EDIT: I just noticed someone has uploaded all of Watermelon Man to Youtube. Made in 1970, its like a lighter version of Black Like Me, with a few early moments that make me think of Chappelle Show. Here's part 1.]

Yeah, it did. Personally I like the DUOVISION better, it's an obvious dig but not over-the-top like QUADROVISION.

Can't wait to see this jive mutha in the theaters. My only fear is the tsunami of laughs from the audience may drown out the fun on the screen.

Slowdown there, this is probably won't get out of the independent/art theater circuit... short of some incredible surge in popularity like Napoleon Dynamite.

Do you think it's possible it won't go nationwide? From what I understand, Sony paid a considerable sum to win worldwide distribution rights. I can't see how just 6 city markets will recoup that.

I see it going to other major markets like San Francisco, Miami, Minneapolis, Houston, etc, but not much beyond there. The likely reason its opening in six cities is to test how popular it actually is before they decide whether or not to make more prints. Otherwise probably only these prints will make their way across the independent movie scene.

Bah. If that's the case then I guess I'll try to catch an inexpensive matinee. Going to NYC isn't exactly peanuts for me, given the choice between watching a movie in NYC and a movie that's walking distance. Our Garden Theater has had a reputation for carrying offbeat independent movies so who knows, maybe it'll carry the flick.

Black Dynamite was an amazing movie. I saw it during SIFF this summer, and wanted to see it again but had trouble finding a theater playing it last weekend.

When I saw it at SIFF, the director and lead actor came on stage to give a Q&A after the movie, pretty amazing.

just got back from seeing the movie, and HOLY SHIT DID IT LIVE UP TO THE HYPE!
it was one of the most absolutely ridiculous(-ly awsome) and hilarious movies i've ever seen.

all you need to know about this movie is this: MICHAEL JAI WHITE IS AWSOME.
now go see Black Dynamite! preferably with friends!

I saw it last Friday. It was simply awesome. Don't want to spoil anything but I'll just say it's just as bad and awesome as real blaxploitation films from the 70's. Cheesy acting, re-used special effects and a plot with so many holes in it that it looks like swiss cheese.

One word of advice though, definitely see this with a group of friends. I went by myself and there was about 3 other people in the audience.
