So what's wrong with the movies, other than you not agreeing with them? Most of them grossed higher box office than the vast majority on the Rotten Tomatoes list. Most on the list were failures. Slacker Uprising also doesn't count because straight-to-internet doesn't qualify as a major release.

....and that list was total bull shit. Babylon AD wasn't a good movie but it didn't belong on the list. Ecks vs. Sever was a bland movie but it CERTAINLY didn't belong there.


I've said it and I'll say it again, fuck lists. Countdowns and lists are for simpletons that can't research things for themselves.

I do kinda agree with them, the problem is, they were documentaries and in typical Michael Moore style, he purposely stated countless false facts during them. He'd rather spit out false facts in exchange for a bigger hit ( more money in his pocket) than actually tell the truth.

Like in his film Roger and Me, he stated the entire film how Roger Smith refused to meet with him for an interview and he really played that to help the film out.

However, that was a total lie and he did in fact have a full interview (that was filmed) with Roger Smith. He purposely left out the interview and went ahead stating that the guy refused to ever meet with him.

Now, what kinda "documentary" is that ? Where you interview people on your topic, then claim "I never met the person, they refused to return my calls".

The guy is a fucking fruad. He's always been a greedy fruad right down to when he was suing people before he turned 25. He doesn't give one rat pebble shit about any of the causes he makes films about. All he cares about is $$$.

Oh, I can't wait to see his new film Capitalism. The best part is, Moore is a raging Capitalist who's exploited every possible angle of it, right down to demmanding multi-millions up front to make the film.

I just wish they would stop calling Michael Moore's films documentaries. Everything about the way he does his movies, as Abusato stated, is skewed to his means.

Well, I certainly agree the set design was pretty good --and that scene is my favorite too. (actually, I think its everybody's favorite... I can't even remember any other scene other than the forced "Mother" and "Father" joke). But set design does not make a movie, just scan the collected works of Milla Jovovich.

There's a really bad assumption that's being made here: documentaries can be neutral.

I've been a longtime fan of documentaries, and I've watched everything from Nanook of the North to Man on Wire --the best documentaries have never been neutral. It's impossible.

Even with cinema verite, the very act of editing is bias.

(don't even get me started on some of the low-quality trash that Discovery and History resort to these days)

About the only way you can try to avoid bias is explaining something non-controversial (how do you make a dam? And not "how did you make ____ dam?", because that also can have serious bias: see something like Three Gorges Dam), or go with something like the incredible boring stuff I had to watch in an anthropology-through-film class (where you watch completely raw and unedited footage, so you can draw your own conclusions --let me tell you, it will bore anyone to tears)

So, completely separate from the issue what a person things as a subjective opinion (on which I have no strong feelings), people blaming Moore for making "fake documentaries" know nothing about documentaries.

With that said, the best documentaries challenge your opinions, and that's why I love docs like Wild Man Blues, Tyson, General Idi Amin Dada and others where you see a person in either a new light, or a more in depth undestanding than you thought possible.

I finally got around to watching Battlefield Earth last year but it was the Rifftrax version. I suggest watching it, its pretty funny. But what an awful movie. Seriously, the cave men learn how to fly fighter jets? Jets that have been sitting there for decades (or was it hundreds of years?) and still fly just fine?

Totally get your point and I'm not going to stick up for everything that is classified as a documentary because, as you said, once you edit, you're taking away from what you've seen happen which is in someway inserting a bias.

But with anything out there, I think there's a line where it stops being what it was classified as and is something else. I wouldn't want to be the person to come up with that line (that's an argument that would keep going nowhere), but what I can say is his movies are much closer to Documentary-Style Propoganda.

nothing wrong in seeing a bad flick, especially legendarily terrible ones -- they provide an...alternative experience in their own way.

I'm with Bobak. I come into the film knowing I'm seeing one side's argument. The other side will say something completely different. You have to decide if you agree in general based on the outside facts you already know or can find. The people who just blindly fall for everything they are told are the ones who can't properly judge the films. None of this means I can't appreciate the documentary for what it does right.

The only movie I watched in that entire list was the master of disguise. Actually, I only watched 10 minutes of it before changing the channel. Terrible.

It's a shame too, because I used to like Dana Carvey.

I own a copy of Postal on Blu-Ray, did that make it? That's easily Uwe's best movie though, so it might not be on there. That movie knows what's it's trying to be, though, just utterly poor taste, tons of violence, and Uwe playing himself and getting shot in the balls with an automatic weapon for making bad movies about videogames.

I have a sick fascination with Uwe's movies, though, and I'll buy pretty much any that come out on BD, so I also have Dungeon Siege (got it dirt cheap, at least, which was still too much, also I'm gaytham for Statham ala Oswalt), and it is indeed awful. Got through maybe 45 minutes and then realized that it's 2.5 hours long, thus I had barely made a dent, had to turn it off. I also tend to really dig Perlman, even those two together can't save Uwe from himself.

I watched Basic Instinct 2 only last week, it wasn't entirely without merit, pretty shod and nowhere near as great as the first, but not total rubbish.

Deck the Halls is a decent flick for the kids too, I even had a guilty chuckle during:help:

To be fair though, I am easy to please and loved watching Cyborg last night.

Same here... Tom Green's movies always were SLAMMED by critics, but for good reason.
