Canonball needs a game with more killing.

Seriously though, that will be the next board game I purchase. I'll be putting in a pre-order soon I imagine.

I really like hex tile based games like this, although I've only played similar things in video game form. I will keep my eye on this. Do you know if there is anywhere to read the rule book yet? I saw you can email the designer for the current draft of the rules but would prefer to just download a pdf or something somewhere.

Yes, you can read the rules for the first game in the series, which has the rules available.

Pick whichever language you prefer.

In terms of components, Conflict of Heroes is lavishly produced. It's like the luxury car in terms of quality components. It just blows every other modern wargame out of the water.

But, of course, there is a price to be had for these components. You get less stuff than other wargames, but for what is included it's still an all around great package.

I basically like to play board Wargames that aren't so complex that they'd be easier on a computer or console.

I purchased a couple from CoolStuffInc a while back (Power Grid, Puerto Rico).

Most recently I got Brass from TopShelfGames and it just got here today and I have to say they blew me away with the packaging. It's 10x better than most PCBs I've bought. I highly recommend them.

Automobile I bought directly from Martin Wallace's site.

Just kind of all over the place. Whoever has the best prices.

Where do you usually buy from?

I've been buying my stuff from www.gateplay.com

They're one of the ones advertised at the top of the BGG home page. I chose them because they are quite competitive in price, and had the lowest 'free shipping' requirement at $100. The only thing is that the selection is smaller than most, so in a couple months I'll be out of stuff to buy from them.

I just got a Martin Wallace game, Toledo. Themed in 16th century Toledo, Spain, players build the best swords to present to the King (Emporer?) of Spain.

This is quite a fast paced game. The game board is basically a track similar to Caylus, a winding road. Players can lay down businesses on this road as an action, and then either land their pieces on those businesses, or use other players businesses at the cost of movement cards. Movement cards double as money in this game. So what you do is land on a business that gives you steel, or a gem, and you build up your supply of these goods then eventually you can have a sword crafted for you by landing on the Swordmaker business tiles.

There is a little bit of player interaction thrown in. If you want to use a business that is occupied by an opponent, you can challenge them to a duel which is solved by flipping over cards in the movement card deck. The cards all have a picture of two guys fencing, with either the attacker or defender highlighted, which tells you who wins that round. Best 2 of 3 wins the duel, the loser gets sent back to the Cathedral (Start).

It's a quick playing, easy game to learn. Nice artwork on the board. This one at most places is $40 online. You can get a lot more bang for your buck than this game, but I do think it is fun. Probably would be a decent gateway game to non-gamers.

This week I bought some Fantasy Flight Games stuff:

Talisman Revised 4th Edition
Talisman The Reaper Expansion
Talisman The Dungeon

Had the chance to play Talisman a couple of weeks ago and couldn't get it out of my head, I just though it was so fun. So I went to the FLGS and bought all these items. First purchase at the FLGS in months because I was sick of overpaying. However, this revised 4th edition from FFG is out of print so I had not much choice. The base game is about impossible to get new online right now. I'm happy I bought it though and am planning a game session this weekend. I'm in the process of hand painting the minis that came with this set. These are really nice articulated minis, I'm impressed. I've liked everything from FFG so far, DOOM, Arkham Horror and now their version of Talisman.

The deal between Fantasy Flight Games and Gamesworkshop has produced some really cool stuff. Particularly the reprints of older GW titles.

But now I'm glad to see FFG is developing some new games based off of GW's IPs.

So far they've got two games set in the Warhammer Fantasy Battle world coming out. I'm pretty intrigued by one of them, the Warhammer: Invasion LCG. I love card games and the LCG format is great.

I'd love to see FFG do some kind of Warhammer 40K game, but so far all they're doing is the new Rogue Trader RPG (as well as continuing to to do the older 40k Dark Heresy RPG.)

Oh well. I hope GW release SPACE HULK later this year.

Had a good gaming session last night. Played two games of Agricola (1 family rule set to help my friend learn the rules and 1 normal game with the deck of cards). I love this game more and more every time I play. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has friends that are afraid to get into the heavier games. It's *very* easy to jump into even for people that have never played anything more complicated than Monopoly.

New Games:

Legend of Robin Hood - from 1979, mine is the Avalon Hill edition from 1982. This is a really cool two player. It's basically Robin vs The Sheriff of Nottingham and his lackeys.

Robin wins by completing 3 out of 4 objectives which include stuff like him successfully meeting up with King Richard (this happens endgame), obtaining a specific amount of gold, lowering the king's treasury, and marrying Maid Marion.

Pretty cool game.

Empire Builder

Apparently I have the older edition. This is a crayon rails game, which means you draw your train tracks on the board with crayons.

Awesome.

It's an economics game based around delivering goods. What goods you need to deliver are based on "demand cards" you have in your hand. So it's sort of a random element in terms of what you personally can deliver. This "hand" of cards is visible to all other players though so you can see what they are up to.

Only certain cities have certain goods, and the number of each type of good is limited by the game. Each player is also only dealing with a single train in this game and the train is actually represented by a physical piece.

This is different from Railroad Tycoon and a few other train games where your fleets of trains are represented more abstractly.

Seems like a fun game and i'll probably be playing it soon.

Tom Vasel has some good reviews up on BGG.

I got a couple war games lined up for late this year. Both Twilight Struggle and Paths of Glory are getting deluxe edition reprints from GMT games, so I think I'll take the plunge and grab 1 of each.

Paths of Glory is supposedly super duper hard, but I'm infatuated with The Great War, so I might as well get the best game made for that event.

Oh yeah, I've began to record our bi-weekly gaming sessions. Here's a link to the most recent one: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/45283

GenCon is exhausting.
had a total group of 6 go, so it was a full house.

we spent a good deal of late hours at the library just checking out games and trying them.

I finally got around to Arkham Asylum.....
4 hours later we finished it with 5 players.
30 min later , my gf purchased the game.

Tons of pics, which will have to wait till tomorrow.

exhibitors were a lil skimpy on the swag this year, but it was busier than previous years. Sunday is usually dead and there was a line to get passes.

Twilight Struggle is excellent.

I hear Paths of Glory is great as well, though it's definitely a longer game. I understand the rules are pretty straightforward, things just get complicated when you add in all the exceptions.

I'd definitely play Twilight Struggle first, then move on to PoG. And when you do play PoG make sure you have someone just as dedicated as you are to learning playing it. I know the rulebook is available on GMT's website. Might want to have whoever is playing it with you also download the rulebook and read over it, so you wont have to be teaching the game while also learning how to play it.

I've yet to pick up a WW1 game, despite my interest in the era - but then again, I'm missing wargames from plenty of eras.

I'm currently awaiting the release of Conflict of Heroes: Storms of Steel - Kursk 1943. Should be out shortly.

Couple pics here. the Dungeon is 3d Descent with tiles made custom for the game. It's really affordable too if people are interested. A guy makes them 3rd party.

Descent Campaign expansion was also there. you can see some of the new characters, the new overworld map, and the ship deck layout.

They also had the mechwarrior pods out. Great fun, but a little short. they were open 24 hrs, and they let ya go wild at night.

Do you know what those tiles are made out of?

They look like they're just the dungeon floor tiles made from molds by Hirst Arts (something that is relatively popular.)

That'd be awesome if they were plastic.

At this point though, I've too many descent tiles to invest in a 3D setup and I'm not interested in painting any of the miniatures.

they are officially licensed by Hirst and he arranges them into descent tiles. They are all hand painted as well. They had some decent weight to them in fit in a really small box. It was nice having a board not shift around. for an entire descent set it was less than $150. he also sells descent mini sets around $1-3 per mini.

edit: looks like $150 was the gencon price. $200 at his website. Check out the Doors, they were really nice. http://www.highergroundgames.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=96

We talked about how cheap his pricing was. He knew that no one would buy 100 painted mini's unless he made them dirt cheap. Same with the tiles, no one would buy the tiles unless they were cheap. Most sets of this quality are 2-3x the price.

Cool, and thanks for the pics!

The hirst art molds are made to be used with plaster so I imagine he is using something like that (or similar) - I hear dental plaster is a popular casting choice for simple molds.

Can't wait for that Descent stuff, though I'm intrigued by FFG's announcement that they're coming out with two Epic (coffin) sized games this year, both unannounced as of yet!

EDIT: Ah, I see he explains what they are made out of. Never heard of the material, but i'll look in to it.

Thats a good price for those interested. Now he just needs to do the RtL pieces :D

! a

Just got back from Gen Con yesterday myself. I'd been in Indy since last Tuesday so I was all settled in and ready to go.

I played in a ton of Zombies!!!!, Humans!!!!, Martians!!!! and a couple of variations and combinations of the above.

I also played in Catalyst Games' Battletech Canon 3 event all Saturday long with a bunch of my high school pals. Had a fucking blast.

The best new game I tried was The Red Dragon Inn and The Red Dragon Inn 2 from Slugfest Games:

http://www.slugfestgames.com/games_rdi.php

http://www.slugfestgames.com/games_rdi2.php

I also picked up these:

http://www.twilightcreationsinc.com/midevil/deluxe.php

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=64&enmi=Anima: Beyond Fantasy RPG

http://www.classicbattletech.com/index.php?action=products&mode=full&id=220

Got a bunch of classic older games from the auction hall and bought various anime DVDs that I'd been wanting forever. Also bought some Captain America, Batman and Street Fighter T-shirts.

Great fuckin' convention this year. Had a blast. Anybody that is a tabletop gamer who even marginally cares about the hobby NEEDS to go to this.

I also tried the Dante's Inferno demo. It kinda sucked, IMO. Looked great, but the gameplay wasn't enough to get me really geeked about it.

There was quite a bit of controversy about that. At least, I saw quite a bit.

The book sold out on either Thursday or early Friday, I can't recall which. But it was the first or second day of the con. Four of my friends who were also up there got frozen out and all con long I kept coming across people who were pissed off about FFG not bringing enough copies to satisfy demand. But I believe it'll be available on bookshelves starting today so everyone gets their copy now:)

I wish Games Workshop would come back to Gen Con. They had some truly epic booths and exhibits back in the day.
