Movies like T2 and the Dark Knight prove it doesn't have to be that way.

Exactly.

I can give you a list of many MANY now classic movies that were "summer action movies"

Nobody will be watching these two films in 10 years. How many people do you know that still hold things like Armageddon and Godzilla in high regard and watch regularly?

Nobody.

I liked the cop car out of the first movie. Other than that I really don't care for it too much.

The problem is I know these are going to be lame, but I don't really know until I see them. So I want to see them and hope that I'm wrong then I see them and waste my cash. I've pretty much quit going to the movies. I maybe see like one movie a year now. I've not seen one this year as of yet.

I can't stand that ladoofus guy either. I just don't like watching him so that does nto help me out any. When it comes out on video I'll grab it on netflix and have a look.

Odd I can't think of any movie in a long time I wanted to go see after seeing the trailer. The teasers make me interested and then I see the trailer with the whole plot spilled out and every action scene and then why bother seeing it after that. I would rather watch those bunny 30 second movies. Same effect with better acting usually

so you're expecting GI Joe the movie to be a very serious non-popcorn movie?
No, I'm expecting the movie to be a calamity of Biblical proportions. I'm saying don't badmouth the property in general, not the movie specifically. The movie will be garbage. Obviously.

i'm not bashing the property in general. all i'm saying is that people seem to be wanting a deeply profound and moving FILM, when they are watching a live action version of a CARTOON. so don't go in to watch Gi Joe in August and expect Private Ryan.

What exactly are people looking for in a live-action Transformers movie that could possibly make them happy? i have yet to hear anybody actually state what it is they are expecting ("a good movie with a decent plot/acting" is a seriously vague answer).

Dark Night and Terminator franchises weren't built around selling toys to pre-teens.

Not Terminator, maybe, but Dark Knight definitely is built around continuing to move Batman merchandise, which is where WB makes its money off the IP. Properties like Superman and Batman make WB millions in sales of T-shirts, toys, pajamas, and whatever else annually, whether there is a movie out at the moment or not. Things like Batman cartoon shows and comic books are produced to keep that brand name alive and keep selling that merchandise.

Also, if you're watching a Batman movie, and he changes his outfit midway through the movie...or starts using a new vehicle for no real reason...or the Batmobile gets damaged/destroyed and he builds a new version midway through the movie... Guess why that happens?

(Answer: toys)

Yeas, I understand all that... And that they did all sorts of Terminator Happy meals and shit.

But at least the source material of the batman graphic novel is built around something other than blind commercialism.

But the Transformers shit... Trying to make a silk purse out of a Sow's ear.

Selling graphic novels to a limited market.
Wrong. The Batman comics were created at a time when many popular comic books sold MILLIONS of copies each issue. And there was huge merchandising and advertising tied into any comic book property a publisher thought could sustain it. For example, Kellogg's was a huge sponsor of Superman for years in the early days. And Superman "himself" would promote their cereal on his radio show back in the 1940s.

It is only in the past few decades that comic book sales have shrunk to cater to a limited market.

And at no time have super-hero comics ever been published purely (or even primarily) for the sake of creating art. They have always been about blind commercialism. Proudly.

I don't need a history lesson... I know the basic history of comic books.

My approach was rather narrow.

Well, I give that one to you for free. I was just trying to point out that your earlier statement of, "But at least the source material of the batman graphic novel is built around something other than blind commercialism," was patently false.
