Fixed.

Found out the issue wasn't even the j-gen at all, it was the brightness thing on my cab. Got it going good now :D

It's because RGB is tapped from the wrong points, like the inputs to the sony encoder or even worse the outputs or the A/V port. Best points are before the voltage dividers (same as the video processor pins).

The other problem is that the j-gen that 68k makes does not have a video amp in it. On some monitors that isnt a problem and it works fine, on others you have to crank up the brightness to compensate for it. That was the main reason I made my own :) Having a video amp really makes a world of difference...that and with a small sound amp I got it all to fit with spare room into an Geneis2 which I much prefer the look of.

If RGB was tapped from where I said there would be no need for an amp.

Even tapped right at the video pins your only going to get a video amplitude of ~ 0.7Vpp.
Arcade monitors really need the 2-5Vpp. I have not dealt with a genesis yet, but every other console I have put into a cab needed some kind of video amp.

Off Topic - Pas - what small sound amp did you use? I have tried a HA13001 based amp in my jamma nes and had little luck. A PCB out of a set of PC speakers works tops though.

That's at the A/V port, not at the VDP.

You obviously haven't tried with a neo geo. Or if you did you did it the wrong way.

I was referring to putting home consoles (S/NES, Turbografx, Genesis,...) into arcade cabinets. You are correct that I have not tried to put a neo geo console in a cab, that would just be silly.

The neo geo home console is constructed of arcade components, so it does output the correct level RGB signal, but this is a unique case. Most other home consoles dont output this level of RGB.

Nope. As far as the video output goes, the AES is a home console like any other and the RGB levels it outputs comply with those required by TVs/home monitors (~0.7vpp), not arcade monitors. It's true that the AES has the same componentry as an MVS board but in addition it has an RGB encoder and the RGB which originally is identical to that of an MVS board at some point is weakened by voltage dividers and then sent to the encoder. You can see the voltage dividers in the yellow area here:

If RGB is tapped before the voltage dividers it will be the same as if it's taken from the jamma connector of an MVS board. It's the so-called RGB bypass mod that is often done in order to get rid of video issues introduced by the encoder circuitry.

On a Megadrive (Genesis) things are basically the same: before being fed into the encoder (same encoder as the AES btw) the RGB is toned down by voltage dividers (the six resistors in the area outlined in white). if you tap RGB before it goes through the dividers you can send it straight to an arcade monitor.
