I used to use 1up a lot, but that's out...

I also kind of like Destructoid, but they have too much bullshit non-news, and their reviews are often fanboyish and unprofessional.

Thoughts?

Mix what post 2 and 3 said and that's about right. Plus game conferences.

i read reviews from ~98-05.

i realized that before i read reviews (too young, no internet, didnt buy mags, etc.) i just bought games because i thought i'd like em, or atleast rented first. eventually i realized that that was more fun.

reading reviews causes you to form an opinion right away, for better or worse. you dont get to give a game a fair shake then.

sure some games are shitty, but if no one says so and you enjoy it, who cares?

id say your best bet is to get a gamefly account or similar, and just rent shit.

as far as news goes i just watch hard news on www.screwattack.com . they do opinion pieces and reviews too.

when i really want to see a game i check out gametrailers.com's reviews. the reviews are usually pretty bad but they have lots of nice gameplay footage.

Yeah, here and my own judgement are pretty good ways to get informed and make decisions on gaming.

The problem with most reviews is that they are very uninformative.....

They don't tell me the one thing you want to know.

WILL I LIKE THIS FUCKING GAME?

I personally don't care what the reviewer thinks... I want him to write it from multiple perspectives.

For reviews of niche/hardcore games, I use a combination of insomnia.ac and Play (plus opinions on here and shmups.org). For reviews of everything else, gamerankings and metacritic. For news, I lurk at neogaf.

Reviews (especially magazines) don't tell me what I want to know, either. "What's the gameplay?"

I usually just rent anything that looks good to me. If I like the game, I will buy it or play it until I am tired of it. I don't know that I trust any one place for reviews but I will look to metacritic for review averages from time to time.

For news I go to Kotaku and watch hard news on Screwattack. I check multiple sources for reviews.

My own instincts tend to be fairly solid too, but I like to follow news and reviews to find out about stuff I would have otherwise missed.

Yakuza 2 comes to mind... That game was fantastic, and as I recall, no one really mentioned it here. I probably never would have heard about it if the 1up Yours guys didn't mention how they loved it.

There've been a lot of others too. What can I say, I'm obsessive about games. ;)

Cool to hear how many people get some (or even a lot) of their games from this very forum though. I didn't realize so many of you did.

I actually use Gamespot.

I find their online reviews to be fairly decent actually in terms of describing the gameplay and perhaps helping me to decide if I want to get the game. Based on their reviews I sort of know whether or not i'll like it, I guess i've read their reviews for too long.

Renting is of course, a must, and often times i'll just outright rent a game if i'm interested in it enough.

Also, NG.com of course is where I get a lot of info on whether i'll like a game.

Me too, GameSpot and here, though if I'm really serious about a game --and I want to be safer, I'll also try to grab any other major online reviews I can.

Ben Croshaw.

Just kidding, though admittedly, if he actually likes a game, odds are it's probably pretty damn good. I think I remember him liking Left 4 Dead and suggesting that MAYBE one other game that came out over the holiday season was worth playing.

I used to like 1UP most of the time, save for their various WTF reviews like the one for Wii Music.

Only other review site I think is consistently worth reading is Eurogamer. Good about not over-hyping shit that doesn't deserve it (kind of the anti-Andrew Reiner), and they also give a ton of description about most games they review.
