For the love of god, update the neo price guide

there is absolutely no way to track every single transaction of Neo games/hardware that happens in the world... and the majority of those transactions certainly don't occur by way of this site.

Agreed, but something like this would give people who think the price guide is wrong or misguided a chance to detail their experiences, with a date stamp and room to mention condition etc. all in all though, it's only worth what someone will pay, prices will be subjective and fluid in nature.

I think Tonk summed it all up w/ this one sentence....

I mean, how helpful are price guides? For example, if the guide were updated today and Metal Slug was listed at $10,000, would you consider that a fair price and be willing to pay it? And if so, what makes that a fair price? Because someone else may have paid that much?
$10k Metal Slug, based on what? An arbitrary whim, of course not... an actual sale (or better yet, multiple sales), then that affects value.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a lame homecart guy, but at some point, you can't follow guides....why? because markets fluctuate all the time, even videogame ones. If you are considering buying some high-end games, best way to go about it is to do some research on your own...watch the markets in action...not some static guide.

Search the forums and (dare I say it) ebay for completed auctions to get an idea of the price range. And ultimately, compare that to the intrinsic value you feel like paying for a game.

Nothing wrong about being a collector, just be smart about it. Don't shell hundreds/thousands of dollars for a game coz someone told you thats what its worth.
Your extreme hypothetical aside, you're missing the point of a frequently updated price guide. Your arguments only apply because the list hasnt been updated in years.... precisely what this thread (and mine) hope to change. this site's guide wasnt always "static", just recently due to neglect.

Any price guide worth its salt should be updated no less than bi-monthly, and not immediately affected by a single abmormally low/high transaction price. Everything you're suggesting people do to determine fair market value would theoretically be achieved by the maintainers of the guide if one steps up to the challenge (yes, I'm considering it).

and if people want to buy something and speculate on the value increasing then cool, they are taking a huge risk that there will be demand for it when they decide to sell.

Good thread here...

Those are price gougers, I do not speak for them as their mentality parallels those of lenders who gave out all these damn home loans on speculations that didn't pan out in the end, I use this only as a simplified example.

I simply only want to sell at the same price or slightly less than I bought for.

I think Tonk summed it all up w/ this one sentence....

Thats a extreme example don't you think. The high end carts prices such as MS 1 are universally know and no ones going to pay 10G for a AES MS1 that too extreme. The minute anyone had the nerve to even make a guide and put a price tag such as that on the cart would instantly be discredited. Basically a non biased knowledgeable, fair person/people are required for the task.

It's a worthy thought, at least on paper (or CRT/LCD/etc). But the simple fact is, there is absolutely no way to track every single transaction of Neo games/hardware that happens in the world... and the majority of those transactions certainly don't occur by way of this site.

The simple fact is, something is worth whatever an actual prospective buyer is willing to pay for it. Just because someone once paid $12000 or whatever for a European Kizuna Encounter doesn't make the cart worth that much. It only means that someone had more money than sense. I'm trying to sell my few AES games, myself (need to purchase a snake rack), and I'm leaning toward the lower end of the price guide's range, with not a nibble. So obviously, with this current market, I need to either a. try eBay or b. lower the prices. Obviously, I'll try the option which might net me the most money first, but if it doesn't work, I suck it up and go with option B.

No you can not be everywhere at every time to track all mvs/aes transaction but its is a niche hobby, not to many people collect arcade gear. The community is so small people know each other by their first and last names.

Have you considered the reason why you can not off load your stuff is because the U.S economy is in the toilet and everyone is hording their nuts for a cold winter right now. I personally been trying to off load some 6 slotters which I would have usually have sold before I ever got them through my front door.

*slaps head* I could've had a V-8! So maybe the economy is also why my current home is appraising for a few thousand dollars less than what I paid for it! Or why WaMu just went under! Or why I got laid off due to the closure of my old employer: a major banking/mortgage institution! Why, we need your keen powers of observation in the government! (The word is also "hoarding," btw.)

And it's a niche hobby, but it's more widespread than you think. AES carts can be had at major gaming retailers/resellers all over the place in cities of even modest size (such as Hiroshima) in Japan. I could go literally five miles from my home in Columbia, SC of all places, and go buy from a decent selection of home carts, Neo CDs and NGPC titles/hardware at a nearby specialty store. Might be pricier than I'd care to pay for, but the option's still there. MVS and PCBs may be more the sole province of the diehard niche collector, but the Neo itself isn't really all that difficult to come by anymore. The genuinely uncommon/rare games are that because they're either few in number, highly sought after, and/or the people who have them are loath to give them up.

For those of you mentioning the MVS price guide, I don't think this topic is about the MVS price guide. The MVS one is mostly fine as it is. It desperately needed to be brought up to date when I got to it, and now it's way more accurate than it was. And that's the important thing.

Yeah, you can do it. Sounds like fun, right? I'm sure there's a discernable change in prices in this vast, vast market every couple of months.

oh I completely agree, I was giving extremely extreme examples. But fact of the matter remains, if I am going to spend my own hard earned cash, I am going to do my own research to find out how much I'd feel comfortable paying for a game...and i think it be-hooves anyone making any kind of substantial purchase to do the same.

I guess a price guide could perhaps be a nice resource, but the data is already out there....why depend on someone else to get info that is readily available online to pretty much everyone? Its not like the keeper of the price guide has special access to some neo geo transaction database that no one else can access. they would just be compiling the info the same way as anyone else would. And updating the database as you are suggesting is a tall order which would require a ton of work...I honestly dont see why it would need to be updated bi-monthly. Unfortunately, the neo scene is not really thriving as Neo Alec mentioned. To me, the whole thing just seems like a whole lot of work for very little usefullness/utility....

but I guess if you or anyone else is willing to do it, then by all means, go for it.

Why don't you have a Scooby snack and relax instead because I'm not the punching bag for you to vent your current frustrations in life on with your non sarcastic and bad humor. Why do people actually word check others post, do something more productive man. Want nonething use ful for you too do, ok I'l give you more things to spellcheck because we need your king gramar skills on this blog.

Oh my god despite the fact I commented about Wamu now called chase going under and the housing market in this thread I still was not aware of the facts, what would I do without you.

The truth about the AES is its is/was a specialized obscure system which to this day the average gamer has never heard of. I can not and have never found or seen a AES in the plastic flesh. But every gamer even if they where unaware of it at the time has played a mvs machine which would be the only way they would have come into contact with actual snk hardware excluding console ports. Damn near any gaming gear can be had in Japan, thats not a fair example as they for starter still have a arcade industry. But as you know the AES/MVS was taken out back and put down there too.

Well heck since the neo scene is not really thriving as Neo Alec mentioned we should just pack it up and let it go the killercabs way.

Don't get it twisted... I'm not knocking you or the work you did, which I'm sure has been greatly appreciated by the community at large.

I'm willing to defer to your experience regarding whether the majority of values are still valid, or now stale. But if there's really that little to change, could you tweak the 1 or 2 titles that are way off, and simply change the "last updated" timestamp to reflect the unchanged state of the rest? That would go a long way towards ending threads like this.

Ok thanks for selectively dismantling my words Webster. If you read my initial post again I did say please instead of give me now. My subconscious desire is to protect both seller and buyer, the former from gouging and the latter investment. Ok my tone was questionable to you but yours to me was straight forward and blunt as you told me to get off my ass and do it myself. But nothing taken to heart as its more amusing when people play the advocate instead of brown nosing, welcome to the forums and I hope you have a thick enough skin as not allow minor things like being called a noob get to you.

When I join a new forum, I try to post similar to the existing members of the forum. All I've seen is unnecessary anger from users like Lochlan, so I figured that was just how you guys rolled around here. I was just trying to fit in. Internet hostility doesn't bother me. Also, you guys have every reason to dislike new users. I would also apologize for the walls of texts, but it's a habit I can't break.

I haven't seen a thread move this fast on this forum in the short time I've been here, and I don't have time to catch up, so I'll just restate what I said earlier, in less harsh terms.

Have you guys thought about setting up a sort of "living price guide"? Assign a couple people to maintain it to make sure submissions are legit, and make it easy for users to browse the prices that games have actually sold at, when, and where.

The unfortunate part of a plan like this is it requires quite a bit of setup ahead of time, and needs a decent programmer to get things up and running. The fortunate part of this is, once running, it is a system that can easily be supported by multiple users, and is extremely transparent, and is as up to date as the users who use it are willing to make it.

Anyways, this is just an idea, you guys can obviously do things whatever way you want, I'm just a big fan of user-maintained databases.

Yeah there a particular member here who I can not get along with because he's constantly hostile, don't know or care if he still post or not.

Well so far there's more thumbs down for the list than up at this point with the reason being price gouging and the work involved out weighing the benefits. Hard to believe this is a neo fan site with the lack of love.

That is exactly what the system I'm recommending is designed to work around. It's difficult to price gouge because when you look up a game, it should link you to directly where the game was sold for at those prices. And, although there is significant work in setting up the system, once running, maintenance because relatively minimal. When someone buys or sells something, they can submit their sales information to the database, and someone can spend an hour or so browsing completed listings on eBay and the like once a week.

The really nifty part of something like this, is once up and running, people can donate their spare time to write various useful data mining tools if they want.

A lot of sites on the web focus on this user-generated content nowadays. Everyone knows Wikipedia, but there is also BoardGameGeek for general board game information, RFGeneration as a massive video game database / collection tool, GameFAQs was doing this over ten years ago, with user created FAQs.

If you're content to come off as less intelligent than you might actually be, that's your own lookout. It takes no extra time or effort on my part to error-check what others write, much less what I write. There's no justification for poor grammar or spelling. Ever. And unlike you, by all appearances to date, I'm doing something plenty productive for the community at large.

True. But again, if an oversized shithole like Columbia, SC can have a game reseller with AES hardware/software to be had at a whim, and I've seen multiple other examples within a few hours' drive, I'm afraid you're going to have a slightly tough time convincing me that it's nearly so uncommon as you profess.

One other thought: I'm not really willing to cosign on "price gouging" as a valid reason not to maintain a price guide. :spock:

Market value isn't determined by the price at which goods are offered, but rather the price at which they successfully sell. This is a principle many homeowners are becoming intimately familiar with these days as their properties rot on MLS amid the housing crash which is worsened by the credit freeze.

So whether you like it or not, as long as buyers still pop up and pay the thousands asked for an original unplayed shrinkwrapped MS1 or any of the other "AES wet dreams", then that dictates the effective value on the open market, simple and plain.

And likewise, no matter how high someone offers a cart, if it sits unsold, the data is irrelevant for the purpose of determining value and should/would rightfully be ignored for such price guide calculations.

Just my $0.02. I guess I'd rather have no price guide at all rather than be teased by one that creates minor pricing controversies for lack of updates. Again, I say this with all due respect to the prior maintainer's work. But I think it's safe to say that if the guide had a datestamp from anytime during this calandar year, this thread would never have been born in the first place.

The solution is simple.

Update the price guide yourself, that is - research the current value of all the homecart titles currently available in the market, and then post what you've found. Just create a thread with a link to your price guide, and bump the post every time you update it.

Get some help from others to double check your work.

Just because a price guide is hosted on NG.com doesn't make it any more "official" - this is just a fan site after all and I think a community created price guide would be positive. It's too hard for one person to monitor the prices on all the NGH carts, especially if there are titles he isn't even interested in.

Well, get to it.

(or, did you just want someone to update the price guide for you....?)

For the love of god, update the neo price guide
Its been so damn long since the price guide has been updated even veterans around here often scratch their heads about cart cost. This place is turning into klov as far as updates go. Mods, whoever please update the price guide already.

definitely the MVS list would need more changes than the AES list. games like garou, the last blades, blazing star and pulstar usually go for overguide if they're real.

I'm insulted! How dare you call me anime-inspired!!! :blow_top: I draw my inspirations from sources that are actually well-written, you bastard! :very_ang:

In all seriousness, I wasn't going for melodrama. I was simply stating a fact, as I have a perfectly-honed, callous disregard for the feelings of others with whom I have no personal friendship, and a cruel streak as deep as the Mariana Trench. No one here has ever seen it actually called upon. Last time that happened (some years back), it turned about 250 or so people against me in the course of a day, and earned me a few death threats.

Back on topic, I will buy someone's complete MVS collection for $0.99! You can't beat this deal (for me)!

Huh, your not polishing a gun or knife are you. I find it funny to have a southerner correct my so called engrish considering how you guys speak it:lolz: Ok, Ok that was a joke man since you seem to be lacking humor due to your circumstances. But in all seriously spelling one word incorrectly does not make me illiterate. You didn't say exactly what your last occupation was but I'm guessing a lot of paper work was involved requiring flawless grammar. My discipline in math and thats all what matters to me so although I do make a effort to pronounce myself correctly I don't lose sleep if I misspell a word here and there. Let not get on the wrong foot here.

About your SamSho RPG project that is impressive to have that much determination to translate the entire game, where did you get the script. If you understand Japaneses and are not Japaneses yourself that would reinforce why you are so diligent with proper grammar given what would obviously be a interest in linguistics.

Dude SNK corporate headquarters when in operation was the next city over from me and when I moved out on my own the business was 5 blocks from me. I am telling you the truth no AES hardware was carried at any retailer in the whole south bay area. Even the DEl AMO mall the 2 largest mall in the country at the time did not carry any AES gear, although they did field test MVS games at Aladdin's castles there. I do admit initially the SNK building was open for direct walk in purchases but that policy changed.

Back to the topic at hand, did not think a price guide would be such of a bother like splitting atoms.

That's what I'm doing, and plan to continue doing in the future. I am always open to suggestions on individual games.

Honestly, I wonder if you yourself believe that would be worth the effort, if it were you doing the updating. Let's be real here -- this information is not super-important. It's a small, isolated market. People are going to pay what they're going to pay. The price guide is only there for reference, a "guide" if you will. You can't keep prices in real-time.

That's kind of the idea behind this. If the system is setup right, it takes all of half a minute to submit new info. The idea is people will keep the guide up to date if they are using it.

And the more people point out how it is just a self-fulfilling prophecy, and whatever else, I realize that I don't use it that often myself. I haven't bought a lot of games, but I usually check what people have recently paid for whatever I'm looking at in completed auctions on eBay, in completed sales on these forums, the condition of the item, the amount of information on the item versus the price, if the item is up for sale elsewhere, for how much, et cetera. I'm not buying NEO-GEO software in bulk, and I've found taking the time out to do the research myself gives me much better peace of mind after buying something.

Maybe the MVS list could have separate listings for Korean versions of games, if their values are different to Japanese?

Hello everyone,

could someone tell me how to check a AES cartridge if its PAL or NTSC.

What criterias makes the "Kizuna Encounter" real and how to see if its a fake?

Thanks for your help.

PAL and NTSC is the encoding by the system not the cartridge. Do you mean if the cart is a Euro release?
