I just recently bought one off eBay and when I tried to play it using a D-lite supergun, I only get Black and White video output
Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Update: I was running it on composite on a Toshiba 20inch TV, and switched to S-video. Now I get color, but it is very distorted, almost neon in color. Is it still a synch issue?

probly same as my mk2 board. its has to do with the refresh rate aka mhz. i do not know a cheap way to get it to the proper 60hz frequency

I somewhat recall having an issue with my Konami X-men. I remember lack of sound and some color issues (may have been B/W). Had to give the Jamma edge connector a thorough cleaning.

adding the sync cleaner does not help the frequency

I'm sort of a self-proclaimed expert on the 4-player Konami boards (my vaps entry http://www.vaps.org/members/member_detail.php?member_id=387828).

I would definitely try the game on multiple TV's, testing both the composite video, S-video, and component if you have it. I had this exact same problem with my Metamorphic Force board. It would only go in color for a second with the S-video on my primary TV, but then I took it to my parents' place and hooked it up and it worked perfectly.

The black and white issue on superguns can be fixed by sync cleaners. I have been assured of this by a couple of people who build superguns, and have tested this out myself by having one added to my first supergun. I had black and white issues on Time Killers and Wrestlefest on my tv,and after having a sync cleaner added the problem was fixed. From what I am told this can be a issue on certain tvs,and others do fine without needing a sync cleaner added to their sg kit.

What does the sync cleaner do? Just wondering.

it takes the horvtal and verticle sync off of and seprates them out of the video stream usualy its becuase these are tied to green. also it conditions the signal of these two.

it will not fixa odd refesh rate. which is the problem i have on the mk2

How can I get a sync cleaner?

That might mean one of the RGB pinouts is not getting through.

Then that is what i need for my supernova + super buster bros jamma pcb. It only displays b&w on my set i normally use but it displays color on my other sets. Hopefully i can get ahold of one. If anyone has an extra laying around, let me know.

Thanks! If that is the case, how can I fix it?

clean the pins, make sure the jamma edge is in all the way. check the traces on the pcb leading to the RGB pins and make sure none are cut.

It sounds like the issue I had with Shadow Dancer & Ninja Gaiden when used with my NeoBitz-S. Odd, swapped neon colors and distortion. Using the JROK encoder fixed that.

It also sounds like the problem I had with Block Out with both encoders: colors wrong / neon / too bright / B&W with lots of flickering. Adding the sync cleaner to the JROK fixed that problem.

Also, it should be noted that when I say sync cleaner, I'm NOT talking about a simple LM1881 circuit. I don't know the specific details, but the JROK sync cleaner does more than that and he specifically told me it's not an LM1881 implementation. The LM1881 is just a sync separator. JROK's cleaner actually adjusts the timing so picky TVs can handle it, if I understand it right.

Thats exactly what i need :)

I'll probably have to get a sync cleaner so I'm not restricted just to TV's that tolerate it.

Hey Guys..

If anyone needs a sync cleaner they're normally $15, or $10 when purchased with an encoder. But if any of the neo forum regulars want one just send me a private message and one is yours for $11 including shipping inside the US.

Just to clarify the cleaner doesn't effect the sync frequency of gameboards, or the sync positions relative to the start and end of active video ( so it can't be used to move the picture around the screen area ).

It can be used to
a). strip out sync-on-green to a separate composite sync
b). boost a 1v level sync to a 5v level sync
c). generate a composite sync with correct NTSC/PAL duration Horizontal and Vertical sync pulse periods
d). clean up a sync with a lot of noise in it
e). add two cool looking red and green LEDs to a supergun project

Thanks for the clarification. :)

Yes, that's what I was trying to say earlier, but failed miserably. :tickled:

Just an update. I had a chance to install the video sync cleaner i got from jrok and it seems to have fixed the b&w video issue on my tv i wanted to use the supergun on. This was a jamma pcb that would work fine on any other tv except the philips and sony vegas i have, and this sync cleaner fixed the problem. I picked up a couple extra to have on hand for future projects. Imo they are well worth the $15 and are a breeze to install. Took me about 10 mins and that included disassembling my supernova and letting the soldering iron heat up :) All in all i think its a great buy and a must have for any RGB to NTSC consolization project.
