My HGA Supergun Review! (with Pics)

So I decided to see for myself how good Great Westerns HGA and Customer Service are. I got one directly from them, and this is my review of it, keep in mind I haven't had it long, so I may dislike it even more down the road. Don' ask me why I bought it, I just did! Ok!
First of all, customer service was actually very good. It shipped on the day they said it was going to, and it arrived the very next day (though I'm only one state over).
The packing was solid, there's no way anything in there moved during shipping, so that's a Plus.

Now the full package itself, well... Either this wasn't a new unit, or they built it out of leftover parts, because it is definitely not NEW.
IMG_5084.jpg

It looks alright in the picture, but upon further inspection...
Scratches and dents everywhere. One of the sticks has a big deep scratch horizontally across the plastic face. On the same stick there's a dent in the metal rollover on top.
The sticks are pretty nice, the buttons feel cheap, and feel like they could break easily (keep in mind that this is the "Delux" model HGA, with UPGRADED stick parts... I'd hate to see the lowest model)
The HGA Box itself is made pretty shoddily too. Some of the plastic covering they put on it is peeling off on the sides, and it too has little dents all over it, like it was thrown onto a table one too many times.
IMG_5085.jpg

As you can see, the jacks aren't even straight. How do you manage that? Careless workmanship, that's how.
Also, the RCA plugs look old and dirty, like the I/O unit was lying in a drawer for a few years.
The Jamma harness is actually not bad, it feels sturdy and looks good. The controller cords are long enough, but the plug from the harness to the supergun is SHORT. Maybe 2 feet long, and when the gun and board aren't on level surfaces, it's pretty much impossible to put em together.
IMG_5090.jpg

The innards. I don't know much about the technical aspect of these things so i didn't open it all the way up.
The magnetic lid latch is a cheap kitchen cabinet latch. Truly in bad taste.
The board the controls are on is cut pretty badly and REALLY thin, it feels like it could break if I press too hard, and again, most of the stuff is uneven.
Looks wise... Terribly unprofessional, looks very ameteur, like they didn't even TRY to make it look like it's worth $400. It's a pathetic sight, really.

Now that the worst is over, let me get to the good points.
One, it was easy to setup, though all Superguns are.
The composite quality is actually not that bad, though I haven't tested the S-Vid output (it didn't come with an SV cable, though on their website it states that it does), I'll update this when I do.
The color settings all work as they should, no complaints there.
The setup of the sticks is a little awkward, since theyre Street Fighter layouts, for neo geo games, it looks like this:
ABC
DXX
Which is a little weird...
BCD
AXX
or
ABC
XXD
Are a lot better.
The buttons respond just fine, but they have a pretty bad feel to em. The stick is a little loose for my taste but it definitely isn't bad.

Now here's where it gets hairy, or, even moreso.
One of the sticks doesn't register when you press left on it. Now I know it's just a simple little wiring thing, I know, unless the stick itself is bad.
Yeah, small problem...
This small problem shouldn't be a problem on a $400 unit.
I'm going to talk to them, if I can only get a 65% refund as it says on their site, I guess I'm going to keep it. Hopefully they don't read this and decide to stop cooperating! hahaha.
I emailed them about the non-working stick, so let's see if their customer service is still good after they have my money, I could just show up at their doorstep anyway, I'm only about 45 minutes away.

That's basically my review. I'm sorry it's not more technical, but I guess this would be a good place to look for people like me, who aren't technically savvy and are looking for an easy way to do this. Again, the video quality and all that is good, no need to worry about that... It's the whole package that's not up to par.

The Delux should be the price of their base model, that's for sure, and that is probably still too expensive.
They can either up the quality, or lower the price. It's up to great western really.

PS:
Does anyone know how I can get the game select screen to come up on the 2 slot board? Both slots work, it just defaults to one or the other.
Thanks.

We could have saved you the time and your money and told you that the HGA supergun should be avoided...like the plague.

Its well known to be a piece of shit.

If you can get your money back, you can do much better for $400.

I no longer build SGs (will again soon, though), but there are several members that would be able to hook you up with something far nicer.

I remember when one video mag publicly humiliated them. :kekeke: If you get your money back get a MASS supernova or one of D-Lite’s' component guns.

I know I could have done better. Let's just call this an experiment. On the plus side, I emailed them about the problems and he was quick and polite with his answer, obviously there was a lot of BS'ing going on Like:

To be honest this system requires at least 15 to 20 hours hour job, this comes from overseas because we cannot built this here only we put our customize chip pcb and some parts in it, It goes through several process and all is hand made . During Sea shipment it takes 3 to 4 months to come here and during this period it gets beating . If we make here it will cost 700-00 .Their is lot of difference between our product and the others .

He also gave me about an 8% discount when I ordered, in his words "To make you a repeat customer."
I guess they don't realize that a quality product is what they need to keep people coming back for more.

I'd like to see a closeup of the Jamma connector and relative housing.

I love that quote of his.
If it takes you 15-20 hours to make that hunk of crap, imagine what they'd produce in 10 hours like it would take anyone else to make a better one. :oh_no:

It looks like it was made from old arcade cabinet scraps. For the love of God get rid of that thing (throw it in the trash if you must), and get a unit from D-Lite. I think I'd go nuts if I had to see that thing lying around in my house every day. Yikes.

Hahaha, jesus christ, this is comedy gold.
I didn't try out the stick that didn't work too much but I just cracked it open, they use wire clip ons instead of soddering but that's besides the point. When set on a flat table top, it wobbles! The bottom isn't built evenly!
Oh and the fan in the case doesn't work. And it's shocked me about a million times while turning it on.
This guy is probably going to get a visit from me personally with this thing, and I won't leave until I get a full refund.

I need to take pics of the parts of the plastic covering that are taped on! with scotch tape! This is awesome

Wow. I feel bad if I nick the surface of the things I make.

Seriously, get a full refund and return that unit. Good thing they're close to you.
Besides the screwed up nature of it, it's ugly as sin.

Isn’t their laws against selling such a piece of shit and refusing to take it back? Were I work at if someone took 15 to 20 hours to wire that thing up, they wouldn't have a job. It's a same that they can’t even drill the hole for the S-Video straight.

Here a link to one of their bad reviews.

quote Gamefan mag:

The preliminary designs are a bit
tacky but will change before the final ver-
sion. There's even two audio/video out
puts, so versus games can be played on
two separate monitors!

Since this is a very early version, some
gripes are expected. First off, the color set-
ting options aren't fully implemented. In
fact, there's only one knob that performs a
general color switch from black to white.
Secondly, the signal to the TV isn't very
good and definitely needs some tweaking.
The joysticks themselves are pretty good,
but the buttons need work. They feel way
too stiff, and your fingers will be hurting
after several minutes.
Still, the HGA shows much promise. S-
Video and RGB output are in the planning
stages. And after having a long talk with
the designers at GW, they're now plan
ning to make changes to the joystick, add
more color adjustments, and feature
NAOMI compatibility.

Isn't Stinky-Dinkins the only one that praises the HGA cuz he has one. He's the only one on this board I know who has nothing but good things to say about the HGA. Heh, I could never tell if he was really serious about what he was saying or what! :spock:

Seems like quite a bad experience (Or should I say experiment?)
That supergun looks like ass, given for free would probably still be hard
to take it (Expensive) :kekeke:

I'll get some more pics of the innards and harness and stuff like that once my camera charges up. trash talkin' to recommence then.

EDIT:
So I was told I was sent a used model that was supposed to go to France by accident. I'm supposed to be getting a new one.
We'll see how this pans out.
