So are there SNKGs of every game?

I remember being able to rent out an AES here in the UK, but I beleive it was from an independent store, which had come up with the idea themselves. And from this psuedo Blockbuster-style video store, Hollywood Video or something like that.

Wow, this is all new to me, too. As it happens, I just received a SNKG KOF '94 cart yesterday. I'd never seen one, but as the boards are legit, I didn't really give it another thought. Doesn't really matter to me, but it is interesting.

Yes, that was the case that I was talking about. Due the high price, some stores decided to rent it by their own.

I used to rent the AES all the from 92-95, you would get a system 2 controllers and 3 games in a neo carrying case. I dont remember how much it cost but was reasonabley priced.

I would think that the MVS carts would not be rented because in year the game is no longer a hot title and the operator can just return it. Leaving his supplier with a ton of games nobody wants.

That's probably why I don't remember. I was in a bottle of Jack Daniels from 92-95.

I didn't know the AES started out as a rental only system...

Where would you rent it?

Video game stores I guess... games aren't really rentable over here though. I'm not sure about the Famicom / Super Famicom era, but since the Playstation / Saturn days, games aren't rentable. You can buy 'em used or new but that's it.

A major video rental chain had some Dreamcast titles that were for rent a few years ago but: a) you could only rent the games, not the whole DC system, b) there were only four or five titles for rent, and c) it was obviously some promotion dreamt up by the people at Tsutaya (the chain's name) and Sega. You couldn't rent any other kinds of games, and you couldn't rent DC games at any other video store.

You can't rent games over there?!? Not even games on the newer systems? Do you mean you can't rent the games and the systems together, or that you can't rent games in general? That's insanity.

Nope, no renting games, and no renting systems period.

You can rent CD's (they have to be older than six months, no renting new releases) and videos / DVD's (obviously), but no games.

That's why I'm not sure where / when / how the AES was first rented out.

Maybe it, and the games were rentable because it was designed to be a rental system and not a privately owned one? Maybe SNK thought it was too expensive to be sold as a home system at first?

My first experiences with the AES in Canada were also as rental systems. The first system I ever played was the rental system my friend bought used from a video game store that eventually sold it.

After the 16 bit era, game rental is slowing disappering here, cause it's TOO easy (and cheap) to find bootlegs of PS1, Saturn, DC, PS2 and Xbox here.

Some stores still rent PS2, Xbox and GC games, but they are exception - their customers usuarilly are rich kids, which the parents demands manufacturer warranty and such.

GC rent is more common, since the GC games weren't bootleged yet - It's difficult to find the GC games though, they are always out.

Something about that seems unholy.

Yes, lots of people here said that at older threads that AES were designed for the rental market, but they prefered to openly sell it cause the rental operation didn't worked well.

I've got Double Dragon, Galaxy Fight, and Last Blade 2 SNK-G carts all with original labels. Nothing special about them but it's always nice to add more color to your collection I guess.

In Spain you can still rent videogames for any current platform everywhere. Since nowadays everybody has a CD burner, you usually rent them for copying them.

About the AES, the videogame store I frequented in 93-94 had one you could play for 1.5EUR the 15 minutes. They also rented AES games, but I think that you had to leave one of your own AES games in the store as a warranty. They would also trade your game for another one for 30EUR.

IIRC the original "AES" system was a rental only unit for the first six-months or so.

You remember correctly. AES was originally planned as a rental-ONLY home system.

The rental box for the AES is the white and green striped. The original one. Same for the joystick.

A year ago or so on eBay someone here won a etched glass sign that said 'Neo Geo Rental Game System' or something like that in Japanese.

Wasn't that on the YJA? That was cool as ice! :buttrock: Too bad it was a shipping-cost killer as well... :( :crying:

My first ever Neo came in that box. I believe it had Neo-0 on the front. I always thought that they were just the first revision machines. I didn't realise they were the rental ones.

Indeed. Hotel units are very rare.

I still have zero interest on SNKG MVS carts anyway.
Their whity look is definitelly sexier than the black MVS ones. :smirk:
