Having had some conversations on the HNG64 boards, it was suggested that it may be appropriate to put this info on the news section.

Super Bubble Pop Neo Geo was released on 15 May 2004. It is the first game from Vektorlogic on the Neo Geo MVS platform. It has been a long time in the making and it is the first full project, following the initial work that was done on Sparks - Sparks never made it out of concept for a multitude of reasons, the least of which were possible tech and IP infringements against SNK IP - this was discussed in the trade press at the time, but there were no communications from Aruze (at the time) to Vektorlogic directly. SNK were offered the rights to our games, but declined. They did offer to manufacture them at a very high price and then sell them back to us so we could sell them on - I declined. Vektorlogic has done work for SNK customers in the past, with SNK approval, with PC ports and we have entered into NDA agreements in the past - details of which will come out if the new owners want to 'press to test' - just to clarify the situation.

The whole ot the Neo Geo cart system was redesigned including PCBs, plastics, security and banking, plus some other 'subtle' modifications to the design. The system does not incorporate and SNK IP at all within the software. The 68K and Z80 databus protocols are not SNK IP, nor is the data handling system of the Yamaha ADPCM system. The VLSPC functions may give possible leads to use of IP (which would be arguable to say the least) but if only the sprite placing functions are utilized, this is only the basis of pretty much every graphic controller of the time - ie the Kaneko View chips etc.

There are currently 6 titles in development with additional titles to follow, if the project remains financially viable - and that is the major limiting factor here. AES versions will be built if there is sufficient interest - and to that end, the magical number will be 100 for AES, not to make a profit on it, but just to cover the cost of plastics tooling and design costs, plus PCBs and components.

Games - Super Bubble Pop is game number 1. It was developed by some of the guys that work for me and released via Runecraft the developers at the time. A console version has been released and the various versions were handled by Jaleco. The game super bubble pop is now owned by Vektorlogic and it has been modified for arcade format, being released on neo geo now, and another hi-spec version will be released in 8 weeks time, commensurate with our own new game platform, entitled Raptor. The game will initially ship as an upright version for neo, and the cocktail table version will follow in 2 weeks from now. A new cocktail table has been produced for Neo Geo and Raptor systems - more details of that in a week or so when the new site goes live. Raptor will start shipping in about 8 weeks - the full system is running and has been site tested, but we are currently waiting for custom parts for the IO handler. Super Bubble Pop in arcade format, has just been licensed to G Cluster who will provide the game on Cluseter Server TV broadcast formats - in conjunction with Softbank. A provisional agreement has been made to make all neo games available for Ultracade. There are no systems currently in operation from other manufacturers that can handle the 3D acceleration requirements of Super Bubble Pop Raptor, or most of the other games currently in dev for Raptor.

Future games include the following:

Manic Panic - 2d maze game with parallax scrolling backgrounds. 4 way joystick required. Upright and cocktail versions. Music by DJ Jesper Kyd from Nano studios in NY. Screenshots will be available at the end of the weekend.

Tommy K Special Ops - Tommy K will be completed by the end of next month and is a platform shooter. There are 4 different levels: Construction Site; Aztec; Sewer; Train Ride ..and there are 4 stages in each of these levels. These are all playable in 1 player mode. There are additional stages for each level for 2 player mode. 1 Player mode has a puzzle element to it, in that you have to accomplish your mission within a set time, whilst not getting killed. 2 Player mode is more akin to the shootfest of Metal Slug.

Tommy has a variety of weapons and 'toys' at his disposal. Typically, pistol, automatic machine gun, rocket launcher, fire extinguisher, dynomite and a couple of others. In addition you also have to operate equipment such as conveyor belts, computer systems etc in order to accomplish your goal. There are hostages to release, but that will not necessarily be your mission, and may not be the best thing to do sometimes, if you are to complete the level.

There will be a soccer game - name TBD and then a vertical scrolling 3d shoot em up plus a couple of others.

Retail for these items will be $395. which may seem high, but this is the first sale of these games (new SNK games start at around $1500) We have implemented new copy protection firmware and we will not be slashing the price aka SNKP.

We need to protect operators and distributors from losing huge sums from buying new equipment, so the price will remain stable and hopefully it will take some time before games are copied - without a stable industry, nobody will continue to manufacture, buy or operate for much longer. The games are primarily aimed at amusement equipment operators. I am happy to sell to private buyers but the price will be maintained until the end of the main sale period. Unlike the SNK production runs, we can re-use all of our parts on different games, so there will be no panic selling to clear stock. Prices will fall for used equipment as always in the marketplace.

Like many of the old and bold who frequented rec.games.video.arcade.collecting i started out as a collector who got carried away with it! However, having built up the buying and selling side, it was a natural progression to want to manufacture something for the industry. Most of this has been done as a one man band venture ( probably ill-advised as comms and shipping sometimes fell down during the last 24 months during this dev phase) but hopefully that has now been addressed. I would like to feel that we (the royal we) are putting something back into the business that made some cash along the way - something that most people don't do, they just want to make the money and take it out, then bitch that manufacturers aren't making product for them to sell.

There are a couple of pics below - full kit and mini kit pics, plus 2 screenshots from one of the construction site levels in Tommy K. Constructive criticism is always welcome - it helps to improve things - and destructive criticism ... just gets filed.

If you like the games when you see them in your arcade or wherever, play them. If not, don't and feel free to drop me a line and tell me what you didn't like - you will get a reply and your comments will be passed on to the coders, artists and musicians for consideration. Just keep playing games in the arcades!

PS for the techies - the games are developed using our own tools. Pre-testing is done on Neo Rage X (thanks Janne and Anders, whom I have known for some time now!) and then transferred to hardware testing. None of the emulators work 100% and you can't use them exclusively to develop on - I have 16 weeks of my life lost to verify that fact with bug testing. We use our own GRP and PRG carts with our own custom FPGAs.

New site will be online for the 1st of next month.

Wonderful to see professional privately-done developing get this far, and I the feeling from the screenshots just screams of early-mid 90's Amiga PD game! (which is a good thing, mind)

The specially designed MVS cases look pretty neat as well

Nice one but I would like to point out that you can use NeoGeo emulators as a base for a dev platform. In the case of Neo Rage X, this emulator does not correctly emulate many aspects of the hardware like kawaks, nebula and mame. The main flaw in emulators is that the do not correctly emulate the watch dog protection and have some problems regarding rasters.

I do hope you have a good protection system though because the neogeo has a huge back door and thats the BIOS. I myself have written to SNK playmore in the past with ways to protect the system but they seemed to ignore them. I hope you have a system that will protect your games well but unless you have a way to init the system totally bypassing the BIOS I dont think youll have any luck as the BIOS can be used as a platform to attack any custom stuff on the cart via trojans. I know because I have used it myself in the past (see MAME source).

On a side note I may be looking to write my own NeoGeo game in the future, I'm an ex games programmer on 68000 based systems and know the NeogGeo system inside out from a programming aspect, I would be writing in pure ASM. Are you intrested in freelance projects if they are up to standard?

Regards, Raz

Well,

About time, looks good!! Are you going to release a Trailer/Video of this game? Looking forward to seeing it in action, that and your new website going up finally. What would be kick ass if to make a 2-D SS game with every character from the series playable on the Hyper 64 hardware, but that is just a pipe dream I suppose.

Hi Raz

Will send you an e-mail ref dev - but yes - I am always interested in game development. We've done a bit with Jeff K and some others - there's a big project starting in about 4 weeks with a large team and we are also prepping a University course final year project (the latter will be Raptor based though) we are also on the lookout for basic windows style games (puzzle or whatever) for consideration as we are preparing a Raptor-based gaming system that will be for Amusement for export ops and cash prize for those territories that allow it.

I agree with your comments on the BIOS - I also offered SNK info on copy protection years ago and that was when I found out how arrogant a company it was. Sitting with the guys in Osaka, and having being out with all of them on a couple of visits - the comany policy was that they were the best and nobody else could do it better. I met with the Taito guys when we licensed Pop n Pop and met with Nishikdao to show him Space Invaders being emulated. They did not believe that it could be done and thought it was just a re-write for windows - very amusing at the time.

We have a different copy protection system - we use EPROMs not masks so they can be downloaded and a dump will exist pretty soon I am sure - but then it has to be hacked and I think we have about 12 weeks built into it - the price is low enough to prevent huge savings and a lazer cut with an electron microscope scan is about $40k at the moment - I don't think that they will make enough cash out of it to make that worthwhile - we'll see though.....

The games will be available either from normal coin-op distributors, most of whom I have dealt with for years now, or direct from the site.

There is a video trailer preview here, but it's huge and I have to figure out how to shrink it - we do have a preview DVD of that and the pac... sorry... manic panic running, which was made for the ATE show in London and for the recent Vegas show - I will get onto that asap!

Great work, fantastic

but why does a hardcore neo homebrew developer use AOL? : )

AOL - well actually, it's not that bad. Here in the UK they offer a pretty good service. We don't use them for the business stuff, but for home use they provide an excellent service for the charge.

Not wanting to big up aol - but the security, anti-spam etc - you can let kids go on-line without too much worry. No problems with dial up systems that some of the UK business providers have - hence I use it at home :-)

Very very interesting stuff - I hope it does very well for you.

The only comment I have is the price point. $395 is just not good value for money for an arcade or a home operator. Look at MS5 - its selling for half that but the arcades in the UK still playing MS4, if they won't pay $195 for a good IP, something a player recognizes and will play whay will they pay $395?

Arcades don't have many 2d titles playing anymore - its a shame - the ones they do play are the big names; the fighters, Slugs, 'Donatchis, Raidens etc... BIG NAMES.

Not hating at all - as I say - hope you do well. I wonder i you would sell more on the home MVS front; I know its a small market but $195 would start to tempt me even if it was just a novelty. I wouldn't pay $395 for any metal slug (even though I have most of them as kits).

Oh... the graphics on Tommy are not the greatest; can't imagine being attracted to that in the arcades.

Anyway - good luck.

Why does all the artwork look like shit?

The screen shots look like shit too.

Who would seriously pay 395 for something that looks like ass?

It looks and sounds interesting. I had wondered what had happened to NeoSparks. Now I know.

Good luck with this.

I can't speak for the others, but I am very interested in AES releases. Send them our way, Jeff!

hmm...
this game got some mediocre to bad ratings (like on gamespot and ign, and other places) and they seem to think it's "just another puzzler" (that is, too generic, uninspired, but hey good music!).

I have faith that you guys have beefed this up and fixed what was said by some major review sites. If this is a straight port, ehhh I dunno about this.

I do admire your boldness, though. Official or not this does give some breath to the just-dead console. And not a bad price! Too bad I'm too poor a dig to afford $400 from you pitches :(.

Mmmmmm, Neo Homebrew... the NGPC scene was frickin awesome (I miss my linker, Nick you bastard I hope you're enjoying it :D), and I'm sure the people currently doing homebrew for the various homebrew-friendly consoles (namely X-Box, GP32 and GBA) would love to test stuff out on the new hardware. Is this the beginning of a fantastic story, in which we make a journey into the cave of Neo Homebrew? Friends, we shall see!

Simply put, I have yet to see a programmer who has an ounce off skill for artistic design.

Well for all the money they think they are going to make off this youd think they would invest in an artist that draws things that dont look like crap on a paper plate.

I admire your work VL but would'nt it have been better to get FAN input on your projects?? The game you show now definitely looks like something from the late 80's of Amiga. I was heavily into the 64 and Amiga back then and this game looks similar to many titles that came out for those two machines. It does'nt look like arcade material imo.
I was thinking a good Casino sim would be nice with Atlantic City and Vegas Rules option.
Graphics artist is a MUST!!
Once again I appreciate what you do and wish I had the experience and time(ONE DAY) but I feel SNKP's problem was that they did'nt use the formula of FOR THE FANS,BY THE FANS Of course you're not going to do everything people want BUT it gives everybody a chance to get involved making things pretty interesting and exciting.

that full-size marquee is terrible... really, you have all that room to make the title bigger...
