    Question

Oooooo, there is a fact that I would like to know. What SNK artists, musicians, etc. have worked on Capcom games (or any other games for that matter) so we can compare the differences/similarities in their style? ....if that makes any sense.

    Shito:
Correct spelling for Neo-Geo actually is like 'ne-ow jee-ow' ('ne' si prononced as in never, and NOT as in 'new').
"correct" you say? When it comes to linguistic matters being normative often leads to misguided conclusions...
Considering it's a name of Indo-European origin (ultimately going back to Old Greek), I fail to see how some cats belonging to a totally different linguistic family and with a manifestly poor command of English (or any other I.-E. languages for that matter) are supposed to establish the 'correct' pronunciation of those I.-E. words for us native Indo-European speakers.
The obvious truth is that since the lexemes "Neo" and "Geo" are independently found in a variety of Indo-European languages (Italian, German, English, French, etc.) their pronunciation will be language-specific, i.e. different in the different languages. Therefore, the upshot is that there can be no universal pronunciation of "Neo Geo": the Italian, German, English, French (etc.) ones all have reason to exist.

On the other hand, one might ask whether the alleged Japanese pronunciation has real linguistic grounds or simply originated from the ignorance of the speakers (e.g. note how Italians pronounce "X-Files"). For instance, one should check whether or not the lexemes "Neo" and "Geo" are present, as borrowings, in Japanese (I mean quite apart from the SNK system) and whether or not they have the pronunciation you suggested above. This means that you'd also have to adduce a phonetic rationale underlying the different pronunciation of "-e-" in the two words by Japanese speakers.
Needless to say, if you come up with a motivation like "they made it, hence their pronuciation must be the correct one" don't expect me to find it satisfactory...

We should be grateful they didn't name it in Japanese. Plus the multi language support in games.

    "Neo Geo"?

I Just call it "cool big black bad-ass Japanese console, the one with the huge carts, y'know"...

Seriously tho, the correct pronounciation (given the Greek roots of the name) is Ne-o Ge-o, the "e" in both words as in "never", the "o" as in "Dojo" (not "Doujou", pronounced short and with emphasis) and the "g" more like a soft "k" (without the anglo-american "tj-" starter). The "o" should be pronounced very short.

Yep, we don't know what the ole' Greek really sounded like, but there sure was no English "g" ("tjih" - sorry, I have no phonetic charset) or "e" ("iih" as in "flee") in their pronounciation of both words.

God, can we get more anal than that?

Yeah, the words Ne-O Ge-O sound like they are being musicly said in the start up screen (when the logo flips around), just hear it to see what I mean...

I SORT OF hear it, it's like the Ne-o Ge-o is the bells (it does it twice, one slightlyhigher than the other) and the mumbling stuff in the background isn't anything. Yeah, I see what you mean now. The Ne-o Ge-o is the bells.

whats clearly written on the korean systems is pronounced:

    nay-oh jay-oh

    as i said before.

not sure on the sound the j gets tho, either an H like sound like Tak said, or a 'juh' G type sound. this is fuckin hard trying to write these sounds, cuz they can still be pronounced wrong

NEEEEEEEEEEEEE-OHHHHHHHH JEEEEEEEEEEEEE-OOOOHHHHHH is out i say it though.

and in the neogeocd special, when athena says it its pretty much kinda like:

nee-oah (accent on the second half, which is short and cut off) jee-oah (accent on the second half, short and cut off)

both use the long E sound as in see. i think we need some wav's here...

Keep this thread alive, guys. It's the best damn thread this site has had in months.

The Fatal Fury series originally had the working title "Real Bout". It was not until the release of the first Real Bout Fatal Fury in 1996 when the series got its original name back.

    Here is one for you...
Everybody knows the name of the Japanese version of Art of Fighting - Ryuuko no Ken
But how about a bootleg version of Art of fighting called

    Fit of Fighting.
    How gay sounding is that.
This one is not neo related but also gay.
    Fighters History bootleg is called

Both pics are clips from page 11 of the 6slot MVS manual. I had to butcher the page quite a bit to get the filesize small enough for use with my free image host. Hope it still serves its purpose.

Edit: Pics didn't show... use links. Good call Kernow wink

Edit Nearly 7 months later: The links to the pics are probably dead. To clarify what the above is about, the scans of the manual show how the neo geos can be hooked up to modems. The modems would be used in conjunction with financial planning software and printers.
