Probably a really stupid question, but...(Voltage Converters)

I keep hearing about voltage converters - I THINK the NGCD Im getting is US (I live in the US) and Im assuming that you should only get one for an imported system. I heard that it can be played with the wrong voltage, but it isnt good for the system. If I do need one, about how much do they go for and where should I go? I was thinking probably Radio Shack - what exactly would I need and how much? What voltage converter would I need for a UK or Japanese system? Thanks again guys. Maybe this is why my AES was broken...

Yes, you need a voltage converter because japanese outlets are 100v, and ours are 120v - therefore your system could fry.

Alright, thanks alot. I'll get a converter. Phew, that was close. My Neo showed up today, haven't tried it out yet though.

I've used almost every Japanese console ever received without a voltage converter. The difference between US and Japanese voltage is negligible.

If you want to play it safe that's cool, but I believe it's unnecessary.

I thought it was being overcautious also, until my NeoCD started acting screwy and restarting in the middle of games. Voltage converter seems to have fixed that <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" />

The US is 110 volts and the voltage in your house fluctuates far more than the 10 volt difference between ours and the Japanese voltage. A converter isn't necessary.
I have several Japanese systems and have never had a problem.

I have talked to my electrical engineer father, and he has confirmed that a volate converter is highly recommended. Not using the correct voltage (even if it's only 20 volts) can seriously damage the console and adapter.

It can, it just depends on the parts used... and if they were designed to take sure a load... I would play it safe with valuable electronics, but my Japanese PSOne doesn't have one, and I could care less if it bites it :)

LOL @ PS1. But for a neo cd, I would use one - Mine did some REALLY crazy stuff when I didn't (ate CDs, restarted, etc.)

Im going to play it safe, because when I got my AES (Japanese) it acted EXTREMELY strange - freezing multiple images on the screen, coming on for 2 seconds then turning itself off, blinking on and off (NES Syndrome) etc. Tried cleaning it, everything I could think of. I wonder if it fried.

My Dad can grab me a free voltage converter from work, so no worries. I'll play it safe.

Oh, and thanks guys.

I use my import Saturn w/o one...

Where can I get one of these 120v -> 100v converters?

If anything, there is a bit more heat. It most certainly wouldn't "fry" immediately. I've used Japanese Saturns, Playstations, a Duo, Neo-Geos, a Neo front loader, a Neo CD, a Neo CDZ, an N64, a PS2, and a Dreamcast hundreds of hours without an issue.

Don't be concerned that you damaged your Neo Geo.

Well, Im assuming that overtime it WILL do damage. It was a used and very old AES...maybe there was somethin else wrong though.

Well I have been running my Japanese Candy cabinet straight out of the wall for the last 2 years and havent had one problem , and it has a Japanese 100Watt ps in it , I dont think I would worry to much about this.
