I have recently aquired Twinkle Star Sprites, and I find it to be an amazing game! I refer to the Saturn version, which I got from the always cool, NeoBomberMan.

It's almost like a strange amalgam of Captain Tomady, and Puyo Puyo!

You can charge, rapid fire, or drop a bomb. All the bombs are unique for the characters, and all produce great effects.

What exactly is the order system for color changing?

purple
blue
green
red
yellow?

Would someone with an english MVS care to elaborate on the story? What is with the evil twin of Sparkle? The twin guys with bats on their foreheads? The Queen lady?

High Scores?

Largest Chain?

TSS is really cool. I have the NGCD and DC versions, since the AES carts are way up there...

I don't know much about TSS storywise, but AFAIK, it's populated with characters of a Japanese cartoon TV show.

kernow is right, it's great in 2P mode, since it's one of the few competitive shooters and much more enjoyable (for me) than competitive puzzlers, except for Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on Genesis.

After an hour or two of play my mates and me always try to trigger perfect chain reactions. It's great to time them so that the enemy's fire balls immediatey get thrown back, and the boss attacks look cool, too. Great game.

I think the reason why some ppl hate TSS is the cutesy of the game. It's like Klonoa: Door to Phantomile on PSX, a cool jump-n-run, but heavily underrated and shunned, although IMO it's better than any part of Crash Bandicoot except the first.

Perhaps ppl would think twice about TSS if there would be a blood-patch for it... <img src="graemlins/tickled.gif" border="0" alt="[Tickled]" />

I love this game as well.

I have the AES and the Saturn version, I planned to get the DC version but after playing it, there is no need (the Saturn rev is fine, nothing was added to the DC rev).

I just love this game in 2P mode. In some ways, it is a refreshing change from playing KOF's ad nauseum :)

Out of the four versions which one is the best? DC, SAT, NeoCD, or AES. What are the differences in each?

AES, although being the most expensive, has the lowest quality sound. You should look for the DC version. Speedy loading and better music. A nice middle road between the AES and NCD versions.

Actually the DC version is better then all the versions of it. Compared to the Saturn version, the DC has better audio/sfx. Also the DC version contains:

Arranged Music
Original Music
Original High Quality Music

You can also change the processor speed (3 different speeds) on the DC version to remove all slowdown in the game that is present in the Saturn and Neo versions.

The only reason to get the Saturn version is for the Eternal Box fan disc and the "Sega Saturn Mode".

The DC version is a must for people who want game play opions. The Sat & Neo CD versions are good for art and fan stuff.

Thanks for clearing it up, I didn't notice the sound quality since I just played it briefly and didn't mess with the options, what not :)

I think the DC/Saturn version are both very good to own. I think they don't suffer from slow downs as well (there are alot on the aes version when alot is happening).

Of course, I personally don't mind the slowdown since I can dodge more effectively.

No anime sequence in the DC, but the Saturn version does have a lengthy opening animation.

And a freaky one at that. What with the little girl suddenly turning into a woman?

Did anyone look through all the images on the fan disc? Some go from super-cutsey, to borderline hentai, to some guy who made his own Twinkle Star Sprites Magic the Gathering cards.

I tried to listen to all the messages from the characters, but my dad kept coming in and making fake asian language noises, like most xenophobic morons.

"quon quai shaow naoh dai shi to ne" and all that shit.

Mitsugi, I know you like it. Your avatar says so.

The Saturn version has the complete Neo MVS version, along with Saturn version, which seems to add voices, and really nice bomb effects that the neo couldn't do.

My largest chain is 17.

Yes! I knew that the opening had to be from the Saturn one!

I downloaded the opening two days ago and I didn't know where it came from...

And that is still disturbing where the main character's breasts enlarge...

Damn, I already have an MVS kit and a DC version, but now you make me want to go get the Saturn version for the extras. :(

I'll go out on a limb here and say that you are "not a man" until you can play and beat this game. <img src="graemlins/loco.gif" border="0" alt="[Loco]" />

Yea, its presentation is VERY fruity, but if you can close your eyes, imagine space ships or demons shooting at each other, then open them again, you will enjoy pure gameplay bliss!

It's kinda like playing KoF or FF and using Mai all the time. At first, all you notice is the bouncing teemas. But once you use Mai a lot, you don't even notice the bouncing breasts anymore, and get accustomed to Mai for the great character she truly is. :)

Cuz
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GAMEPLAY, MAN!
<img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[LOL]" />
<img src="graemlins/mrt2.gif" border="0" alt="[Mr T]" />
:D

So just close your eyes, and concentrate on the gameplay.

Does the DC version version have anything like the "saturn mode" with better character art, more voices/graphic effects and all playable bosses/hidden characters? Also, where does the character Mei Lin "?" appear? (the Chinese school girl with the panda) I've only seen her in the sega revision :D

TSS is really original and i'm sure that a second version would be a great succes. The 2P mode is the real one and you can play during a whole night with this game.

I find this game to be damn addictive; just fun as fuck. I love how vibrant and colourful it is, and of course, competitive shooting is a real rarity, and works extremely well in this game. I only sold my SS copy as I realized only the home cartridge would satisfy me, for I could play it in English and get all that ADK-glish (…I hope). Yes I love story mode & having it all in Japanese was not something that appealed to me.

If you ask me it has one of the highest replay values of all games on the system (Neo) and generally speaking should keep you busy for a good while. If you want to put it on easy & continue to death to ruin it, well... Your loss.

Finally though some high score discussion! My highest chain Jigen is 23 hits & 688,870 points; MVS level-4.

Actually I made a mistake. My highest chain is 42 (you can get a 20 hit chain on the first level even!), but more to the point: BUMP!
