I was just playing my DC and really appreciate how Great it it or was especially for the fighting games, but then I play my Neo and wonder how can they still be making games for this thing, when the Dc had a Better potential to reach mass market consumers, I love the Neo, but there must something really Great about the NeoGeo to keep it Burning all these years, do you guys think it's the fans support or the Games or maybe both that keeps this System going Strong,Damm Metal Slug 4 soon that's 2 AES games within a few months, any comments on this topic are welcomed.

It's called ARCADE revenue and simple home porting.
These games are created for the arcade's 1st worldwide and then what does it take to port the game over to home system use??
The MVS is more economical than other formats and there is a cult following for Neo Geo.
As for DREAMCAST..what's that? J/K That system folded so fast proving the nbame appropriate...
Now people don't tell me how great the DC is because I AM JUST JOKING.

The Neo is alive because it has an extemely small fanatical fanbase, and also because SNK stayed with it so long, you can thank Japanese arcade operators that bought the KOF kits every year, because that was the main reason SNK stayed afloat.

You can't really compare the Neo to the DC, the DC was a mainstream system, the Neo is not, and the Neo also never made SNK money, I assume that they barly made enough to break even year after year, until finally having to fold.

I think one of the reasons why the Neo is so popular in the arcades is because of it's price and it was truly an innovator with it's MVS system and also for SNK sticking with it for so long. The dreamcast on the other hand is great and while very similar it is not exactly the same as its arcade counterpart the Naomi. Also the Naomi is more expensive than the MVS and Sega has not stuck with it for as long (i.e. they went to Naomi 2, etc.).

Blame Peter Moore and about 75% of the gaming population for the DC folding. So many people out there are closed minded towards the DC and the great and innovative titles that came out for it. Peter Moore sucked the last living breath out of the DC before he needed to. So now I'm stuck importing from Europe and Japan all the time for the games that are still being released for the system.

Dreamcast was also great for the gamers (dare I say it?!?!) That don't even know what the Neo is. If it wasn't for the DC, I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't know what MotW was.

I think the hype surrounding the PS2 launch pretty much killed the Dreamcast. It wasn't as bad in the US as it was in Japan though.

Your right it wasn't AS bad as the brutal Dreamcast "murder" that went down in Japan. Personally, I loved my DC, it's one of the best systems I own to this day. Also, if the PS2 hadn't killed it, I'll be willing to bet it would still be a major competitor.

"you can thank Japanese arcade operators that bought the KOF kits every year"

Actually, KOF has greater support in Hong KOng, Singapore, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, we should thank the arcade support. Normally, I don't like sequals, but in this case, I want KOF to live forever as it supports the MVS hardware, plus, we get a few more games along with KOF each year (Sengoku 3, MS4 for example), not a bad thing at all.

"Blame Peter Moore and about 75% of the gaming population"

Actually blame Tom Kalinske with 32X, a lot of people were POed when they found out the system was dead in water in a year, people don't forget. It sealed the fate for not only Saturn, but Dreamcast too.

If you look at how long Neo-Geo laster, well, it started at NES era, lived through entire life spans of SNES, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, now, let's see if Neo-Geo can outlive PS1.

Drift King: I beg to differ quite drastically. The MVS system made SNk a TON of money and was very much the bread and butter of the company for many years. The older dedicated game setups like Touchdown Fever and Street Smart fell by the wayside, with only Beast Busters and Mechanized Attack still being regular earners.

The MVS is simply the world's best selling arcade game unit with over 1 million units sold worldwide. The software market for it is still huge with profit potential simply because unless a game is a true dog, an MVS title coming out WILL sell and make money, plain and simple.

the real beginning of the end for SNK was three-fold. The Neo Print which was a neat invention until others jumped in the market and saturated it, with the company being moved up north. Dumb move. The Neo-64 I also feel was a mistake, as the R & D took so long that the game system was already obsolete by the time it came out. far better to have simply did some software for the Naomi system and keep making MVS games.

Mr. Kawasaki was smart in selling off SNK when he saw the handwriting on th4e wall. Sadly, the new group that took over was completely inept in their dealings, causing the company to fold. Sigh.

The market is still strong for the MVS, though. The 3D fighting games have become vERY old hat and the 2D fighters which do come out for the MVS out earn them, by much better gameplay. plus the MVS is set for most any type of game, so it really does have a future.

Its all about making good games.

You know about all the titles that Peter Moore moved to other platforms and cancelled on the DC right? That's the only reason I have a Euro copy of Shenmue II

Don't forget about SNK's blunder with the NGPC.
They release the color version 1 or 2months after their B&W version. Not to mention they were entering a market that is dominated by Nintendo.

Also CD Piracy was/is running rampant in DC Land.
I went to a store a year back to purchase something and the clerk tried to sell me a CD with about a thousand DC games on it. Would this type of Piracy motivate YOU to produce anything for DC? also like SNK-USA, SEGA-USA is a JOKE when it comes to business strategy, marketing, etc.

actually i blame the ps2 more than anything.
with the promise of a dvd utility in it the DCs
fate was sealed.
i also attribute the failing of bleem! to deliver
as a reason why many turned away from it too.
the DC would have stayed in the console race i believe if it happened
as the makers of Bleem! promised.
it wasnt due to the power of the DC. which at the
time was very even keel to the ps2 when it launched.
or any thing else attributed to the DC.
also you can attribute the fact that every
3rd party wasnt interested in putting they re
better titles on the system like for instance
namco, and konami. although the DC had huuuuge support from capcom
and capcom btw was probably the biggest supporter
to the DC besides SEGA.
i think japan sealed the DCs fate a few months after it
was released...
japanese people have questionable tastes in games anyways.
im still bitter.
all these fucks who didnt buy a DC doesnt deserve
titles for other platforms.
but fuck it all. its a mainstream world.

Sega's history was partly overshadowed by big N. Nintendo, back in the 80s, sucked in developers like a vacuum cleaner and made sure that the NES got a considerable market share, e. g. by not allowing their developers to create games for other consoles.

So IMO Sega's problems started with consoles per se, not only with stuff like the 32X.

Wondering about the Neo still going strong, well, that's how it should be if a concept still works and can even be extended/improved. Some of us may be alienated by the Neo's long life, considering that things like a PC's gfx card or a new record in miniaturization of micro chips get old after just one year or less.

i totally agree takujami
about SEGA being the underdog all the time.
originally SEGA was first and foremost an arcade
co. but as time moved on they moved part of their
assets to consoles, that being a good thing as
arcades are on the decline.

marketing....

the dc is a great console, without it you couldnt
read my posts here.!

the neo is simply a legend, and true legends never die!

also 3d systems have a shorter lifespan,
because the development is to fast
lets see if the ps2 is still here in 5 years!?
the neo, or at least mvs for sure! :)

aww fuck...i was just gonna bitch about how perter moore didnt kill dc, but then i realized i was thinking of bernie stolar.

he was a great man.

he pushed for chuchu! he wanted online gaming before christmas and it happened!

:D

fuck peter moore...he definately didnt care about the fans...only money

is anyone else disgruntled that the dc is dead?

not because the dc is dead, but because it feels like sega is dead, i mean, i've just been playing jsrf on my friends xbox, and i dunno, i still like the original better. i would probably feel the same about sa2, crazy taxi, shenmue 2, sc5 2, and all other new sega games.

its just wrong

here's hoping for another sega system :(

and dreamcast, just like ps2, xbox, gc, and all systems before it are.have been destined to die before neo does. neo doesnt depend on the mass consumer market.

Admittedly, I still love my DC, although I don't play it as much anymore. Only two machines made me marvel at the graphics of it's games and those two are the very ones that are the subject of this discussion.

The Genesis never did, for obvious reasons. The SNES did a few times, but I was more impressed with it's audio capabilities (the stereo sound was truly breathtaking). The Saturn had too many blocky polygons. Ditto for the Playstation, which was made even worse by it's inferior resolution and bland colour pallette. I had fun with many games with all the systems I mentioned above and still loved them for various reasons.

But then I laid eyes on Baseball Stars 2. Never did I see a 2D game with such rich colours and beautifully drawn sprites. The Dreamcast felled me with Soul Calibre and then my jaw really hit the floor with RE: Code Veronica.

The point of this is, only true gamers can appreciate the nuances and admit the weaknesses of it's beloved systems. No one who considers himself a self-respected game player hated the Dreamcast. Unfortunately, they were the only minority who supported it. That is also the very reason that the Neo defies logic at the arcades, displayed next to 3D powerhouses, filling it's cabinets with quarters. A gamer's machine.

Yes, Sonic I am quite pissed the DC is dead. And I know I am going to get a lot of shit for this, but DC was by far my favorite system (yes even more than the NEO) But this is because I love a ton of different and innovative games SPC 5 is great, and I'm the only person I know of that stood in line first day to get Samba with the Maracas. Both Sega and SNK are alive in their own ways, maybe not making software for their own systems, but moving to different markets (PS 2 <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" /> GCN  and XBox  ). Lest we not forget that graphics don't make the game, but gameplay and story make the game.

SEGA biggest problem was internal. They didn't have the money or the Business ethics to compete. I remember the first thing the Japanese President of SEGA annouced when the system was released in America. He said that they where discussing plans in the future to go multiplatform... serioslly how stupid is that. That just bad business sense and that alone can kill your future hopes but mix that in with not only a bad reputation on supporting your platforms, bad and missused advertisement, and a miss placed marketing plan and you got yourself an instant FLOP!

The Dreamcast no matter what happens from here on out still fucking owns.

With me saccing over 1100 plus hours of my life to Phantasy Star Online, you'd better belive the system rocks.

KoF 2K on the thing is also probably the best SNK port ever done on a home console system to date.

Good job Playmore. :D
