Each title is a matter of opinion, so what I say cannot make you like A3, which is cool. I'm just giving my perspective of the game.
As to "rushing" the game for production, it took Capcom 3 years to develop this game from start to finish. That's a heck of alot of time compared to what SNK puts into theirs, which is 8-12 months tops. I own this game on the CPS2 system and there is rarely a day that I don't sit down to play it. What people forget about what makes a fighting game is that it's not particularly the SUPER MOVES that make the game, but the simplistic jabs, roundhouse etc. and distancing of the gameplay that makes it so deep.
If you ever get a chance, check out www.shoryuken.com and download some of their A3 clips. There are so many amazing moves and combos that most people have never seen or performed.
You're right, they didn't add that many characters to the line up, but what they put most of their time into was the animation and the gameplay. It's so much more defined and tighter in controls than any of it's predecessors.
SFIII, while better in graphics, lacks in gameplay and speed vs. A3. A3 was a success in U.S. arcades, while SFIII was a failure. Give A3 more time and you'll see what I mean. A1 is great as well, but it's not a deep game A3 is.

I take it im still the only person taht prefers alpha 2 to 3? i just thought the game was a lot tighter and more solid as a fighter. and those final fight backgrounds complete with the old music was ace.
i also seem to be the only person who prefers SF3:2nd Impact to 3rd strike as well!!
ah well each to his own, i guess. I seem to prefer fighters with less characters that are more balanced (Real Bout Series, Last Blade, Mark Of The Wolves, SF3,alpha 2) to those with loads of characters (Alpha 3,late King Of Fighters , Capcom vs SNK , Vs series e.t.c)
