    Takumaji:
    Tactics & Tips

    --Grapplers

They dominate 98 because most of them have easy command throws that do a lot of damage. Shermie, Goro, Clark, they all have one thing in common: They can be annoying as hell. If a grappler user is able to throw you out of your combos or reverse/counter your main combos/tacticts, you've already lost. To overcome good grapplers, it's important to become familiar with them first. Practise them to get a feeling for the best throwing distance and when and where to do reversals, specially goro's. You will notice that using grapplers needs good timing and rhythm.

The key is to 'spoil the groove' of a grappler player. If he waits for your attack, well, throw a few projectiles or try dash-in attacks, avoid to jump or roll in the first few seconds. Then keep your block up for counters and rush-in attacks and try to play a counter/hit-and-run game. Keep your combos very short because a missed one will get you thrown, thus you loose initiative. Charas like Takuma that are good for both melee and screen-wide attacks are my main weapon against grapplers, I just cut the charge db,f+P in favour of more projectiles.

Grapplers dominate opponents that have very obvious tacticts or use a typical set of moves/combos all the time. For ex. a Goro player would quickly throw you out of your fave jumping attacks with a hcf+A throw or reverse most of your crouching sweeps with qcf+K, so try to be creative and keep moving.
Good tips, let me add a few things.
Many of the grapplers player like to 'whiff' their jump-in. Most opponents will try to block when they see a jumpin (especially a quick jump), and BAM! the grapplers can easily land you a sdm.

The best way to defeat grapplers (clark especially) is to be very active and quick jump a lot. If clark tries a throw command, and you happen to be jumping, you can land and punish him with combos. The reason why quick jumps work very well against grapplers is because they usually don't have a good anti air...

But then again, as mentioned by takumaji, be creative and unpredictable; its the key for most fighting games...

Would anybody be interested in seeing something like this:

    <a href="http://snkguitarist.com/combos/takuma/combo01/" target="_blank">http://snkguitarist.com/combos/takuma/combo01/</a>

For all the characters and their combos? And not just kof 98, but all games. I know the layout is kinda plain, but my html skills suck beyond belief, so this is the best I could do with what little I do know. It may take awhile to get it going, but it could serve for a good graphical guide for a lot of people who don't like reading plain text (like me )

Hey man, that's GREAT!! I always dreamed of making a combo guide with step-by-step pics of all the combos and a tacticts section. Sometimes a pic shows more than a thousand words. If I can help you with html and stuff like that, let me know.

Btw., I really dig the move description arrows that many sites have (like the Neo Encyclopedia), perhaps we could use some of those, that would also eliminate the "qcb vs 214" discussion.

Could you give me a link? When I was writing this up, I vaguely remembered something about them but not enough to begin searching. Those would look real cool, and give it an online Gamest Mook kinda feel.

If you could do something nice with html then I'm all over it! I asked a friend of mine if he could help but he didn't really seem interested so I had to struggle with what you saw there. If you have any ideas on how to revamp it then I'm all ears, I know it really isn't that good looking. Let me know

Sounds good. How do you think it would look best to seperate everything? Something like a mainpage listing the games, then to the games, then characters, then combos for the characters? Something like this would take awhile to get going, but would be soooo worth it in the end.

I just made a simple draft layout for a per-character combo page. It's a set of three frames, one for the page header, the menu on the left and the actual combo table:

    <img src="http://www.lupa.de/ne-o-rama/pics/layout.jpg" alt=" - " />

Frames are bad for printing, so we need a link to a frame-less/printer-friendly version.

The main pages could be designed like Neo Encyclopedia's, with a number of standard links (about, contact, etc.) and "games", from there we could branch to a main games page with all featured titles, from there to characters, and finally to the combos pages.

Would be cool if we could take a screenshot from the chara select menu of all the games and link the single avatars to their corresponding moves/combo pages, similar to kofonline.com.

That looks good. How about take it another step further and where it has combos and that big rectangle box, we have the lifebar captured with how much damage it does and put a watermark behind it that says 17-hit combo or something like that? Kinda spice it up a little.

I like the avatar and char select suggestion, it would be pretty cool. What would you want the avatar on the character section to be (after you've navigated from the character select screen)? The same one as used on the cs screen, or one on the vs screen? Or actual in game image?

    <img src="http://snkguitarist.com/neo/avatarsuggestion.gif" alt=" - " />

    <img src="http://snkguitarist.com/neo/avatarsuggestion2.gif" alt=" - " />

Once we get how it's going to be set up, I can start to grab images for every character so the basic layout can be done, and we can start to work from the inside (combos, movelists, etc).

I pulled off pretty much all the combos I tried in this thread so if you need a combo person give me a shout.

I can't use a capture card per say but I can use the print screen button.

Do you think of placing the life-bar and hit counter behind the actual combo?

Man, you really have nice ideas. I guess this would be a lot (and I mean A LOT) of work, but if that ain't cool I don't know what is.

I like the avatar and char select suggestion, it would be pretty cool. What would you want the avatar on the character section to be (after you've navigated from the character select screen)? The same one as used on the cs screen, or one on the vs screen? Or actual in game image?

    <img src="http://snkguitarist.com/neo/avatarsuggestion2.gif" alt=" - " />
I'd prefer the first image. The second one looks very good, but it would be too small for an avatar IMO.

Once we get how it's going to be set up, I can start to grab images for every character so the basic layout can be done, and we can start to work from the inside (combos, movelists, etc).
That's right, we should start with the actual combo pages, then build the 'interface' of the site (index'ed chara select menu pic, main pages, etc.).

I'm planning to make a draft html version for Takuma 'til friday according to the things we have worked out so far.

    We have:

    - a general idea about the layout
    - a test-set of Takuma combo pics
    - a collection of move description arrows
    - a Takuma avatar
    - Takuma combos
    - Takuma movelist

    We need:

    - gifs (?) of the lifebar and the hit counter (or a combination of both) for the combo that you made pics of
    - ?

kernow and Diavle18, guess there will be a lot of work to do, so your help is welcome!

    Yay.

I've already started taking screenshots. Whenever videos are made, if anybody else makes any videos, please set the training dummy to block so others can tell it's an actual linkable combo. Once we have an idea of what we need I'll go crazy over making pics and such

Takumaji and SonGohan, I think we should make a list of the combos we have to done so we don't repeat ourselves.

I'll be starting tonight and taking screenshots of some Takuma, Terry and maybe Shingo combos too (if I have time).

Yeah, a comprehensive list of all the combos found in this thread so far would be cool.

I'm working on the combo page at the mo. Guess I will have to Google for other move descr. arrows because the ones from Neo Encyclopedia are too big for a frameset optizimed for 1024x768, or should we use 800x600?

Guess the most difficult part will be the vids. For ex., could you record the Takuma combo you made pics of and turn it into a, say, mpeg?

And yeah, ppl, all help/contribution is welcome, post your combos, combo pics and vids!

To keep the thread growing, here are more combos, this time for Chin. The lil' fella is really a blast to play, except for the stiff feeling when trying to do standing/crouching A/B chains. If you play him right and keep your attacks unpredictable, Chin can be a nasty opponent... perhaps that's why some ppl always put him on their "worst chara" lists.

    --Chin

standing D -&gt; qcb+C (4 hits, standing D hits twice, you can also shorten the combo if you cancel the 2nd hit)

jumping C -&gt; standing C -&gt; qcb+A (4 hits, the jumping C hits twice, let both hits connect)

    standing D -&gt; dp+C (11 hits, a short'n'sweet combo)

    jumping C -&gt; qcfx2 +A (3 hits)

    standing D -&gt; d,d+C -&gt; f+C (3 hits)

Of course Chin has longer combos as well, but I find it quite difficult to get his chains connected. Try this:

    d+B -&gt; standing B -&gt; standing A

You have to have good timing with that. Chin also has a few double-jump combos. His normal jumps are not very high, so you can hold the stick uf or u and hit your opponent twice, like this:

    jumping D -&gt; jumping C

    jumping A -&gt; jumping A

    etc.

After landing two crouching A's in a row, you do a f+A but Chin will not do his Drunken Walk command attack, instead he will deliver a third standing A hit that can be comboed:

    crouching A -&gt; crouching A -&gt; f+A

Lastly, there are his Drunken Snoop moves that start with two quick down pushes of the stick. Chin has two of them:

    down,down+K or P

A d,d+K lets Chin lay flat on the ground, after that you can do a up+B to let him strike forward for a two-hit attack, you can also slide backwards and forwards (useful against some projectiles). The d,d+P lets Chin go into a drunken stance, then you can do a f+A or C for a rush-in hit.

The only part I haven't quite figured out are Chin's cancel combos. He's one of the few charas in 98 that have this ability. I have a small Chin strategy faq that lists one of them:

    standing D -&gt; d,d+P -&gt; C (tap rapidly), ABD -&gt; d,d+P C (tap rapidly), ABD -&gt; qcb+C

What I don't get here is the d,d+P -&gt; C (tap rapidly) part. Normally, the d,d+P puts him into his drunken stance, but according to the faq, rapid tapping of C, followed with ABD (pressed and hold together?) should cancel the stance immediately into a standing C, followed by another cancel.

Does anyone know how to pull off these Chin cancels?

Okay, the very first, very rough combo-page version is finished. It's for Takuma, I only chose a small number of combos, of course the final version should include them all (if possible).

    <a href="http://www.lupa.de/ne-o-rama/draft" target="_blank">Click here</a>.

Keep in mind that this is only a draft, I know a thing or two about html, but I suck at design. SonGohan and kern, bet you could add a few decent graphics elements for buttons, headers, etc.

Also, I'm planning to put an info button in front of every row with a link to a more in-depth explanation of every combo.

I will make another version of the combo-pic page to save space (2 pics in a row), but perhaps this helps to get this thing started.

    Tell me what you think.

Looks cool man, I like how you detail the combo step by step with the pics, that's awesome in my book. I'm at relatives right now, but when I get home I'll see about scrounging up all the stuff I can get. This looks to be a fun project

I banged out a cool little one for Terry today:

    <a href="http://snkguitarist.com/combos/terry/combo01/" target="_blank">http://snkguitarist.com/combos/terry/combo01/</a>

I'm pretty bored tonight without a lot to do so I'll see about doing more characters.

Also, I don't know how you would make an mpeg video file out of a Kawaks record file. Even if you did, the mpeg would be a lot larger than the Kawaks record file (which is usually around 20k - 30k). We all know everybody around here has teh rommmzz, so it shouldn't be a problem

This could be actually added to a faqs link
    here on the site...

Is this only going to be KOF'98?

I'd like to do this with a lot of games. I originally wanted to do it with Fatal Fury Special, but not a lot of people are interested in that game. What could be done is that the group of people who are going to work on it need to lay down the foundation to be able to build upon and update it with ease. So one game at a time, simple layout for each character, then move onto the next game, and as time goes on just update as needed.

I asked a several months ago about including one in the FAQs and they were all for it, but it'd have to be a complete or a solid version (imo) to submit it for the site.

BTW - Edited the Terry combo to reflect lifebar damage. I kinda like it.

If you do combos or stragies for KOF'95 and or '01
let me know... I will be willing to help.

Btw, when is the Gan Gan combo guide going to be
ready? I was thinking that should be the
first thing you would do, but I guess I was wrong.

We need a -Jo- guide. glee

    Here's another one - <a href="http://snkguitarist.com/combos/andy/combo01/" target="_blank">http://snkguitarist.com/combos/andy/combo01/</a>

I'd imagine a Gan Gan guide would be pretty short. There are some little 2-in-1s that I've stumbled upon that are pretty cool, but nothing too deep for the most part. Big Bear said he was planning on working on one, so he's probably more the man for the job than I. KOF 95 sounds fun, that could be next.

    Very good material, SonGohan.

Where do you want the lifebar to be placed? I will make a version of the page for Andy, Kim and Terry according to your combos pics tonight based on the Takuma combo pages.

Btw., I guess a screenshot of the chara select of KoF98 would be too small for a menu, perhaps we could use the neo-geo.com avatars to build a chara menu that leads to the per-chara combo pages.

If you want, I can send you the source of the page for further experiments.

What do you think about the presentation of the combo pics, I placed one in a row with the description on the right, but I could also place two of them in one row to save space.

Wow, reading this thread made me realize I need to pull myself away from MOTW and SS to spend some quality time with KOF.

Lately I've trying to hone my fighting skills by practicing combos, tactics, and various character strategies. And it seems KOF98 would be the perfect game to work on my skills; sad I never seemed to notice this until now.

It seems that I can pull off the majority of these combos in practice mode, only problem now is working them into actual battles.

That's something I need to work on...

    @SonGohan:

How do you get those clips to work with Kawaks?

I know how to load and save my own, but I can't figure out how to view yours.

    Takumaji:

Sounds good to me. Or perhaps we could take the character select screen, resize it to double, and then use it? It'd be big enough to use as a navigation point, eh? Or would you rather stick with using another source for avatars? I have more time today so I'll see if I can crank out a few more characters.

@Average Joe - I use Kawaks to record these videos. When you download them, put them in your "recinput" folder. Remember, it records it as kof98.rc0 , which is basically means - kof98 is what my rom zip was named to, the driver rom, and .rc0 means I used recording slot #0 (all of the recordings are done in slot #0). I'm using Kawaks version 1.46, so make sure everything is the same (rom name, recording slot, version of kawaks), and then press shift+F7 to play.

When the page is done, there's going to be a little FAQ I'd imagine that will cover all the grounds with the stuff on the combo pages and such.

Right now I'm not trying to do any fancy elaborate combos, just stuff that is actually feesable during battle. If you stick with practicing these combos over and over and over again in training (make sure you have dummy set to guard), then after time in battle they should come as natural as your regular special commands.
