I got to play KOF 2002 a couple of times(I won a mini KOF2002 tournament @ Ushikon) and Here's what I have to say:

Over all: a Nice episode, best KOF since '98 :D (Never had so much fun in other KOF post '98 wink )

GamePlay: Faster(me like it), more strategic(ditto) and with a new feeling(yup kicking K's,K'9999's arse with Yashiro or Yamasaky -real baddarses- feels amazing)
The Max mode is totaly awsome IMO so far the best mode of it's kind., Although some Style, simple combos and moves in some Characters are missing or have been changed other things make up for it (aah... re-learning characters you alredy know in other KOF'S is priceless).

Ovations:
Bringing The Orochi Gang back XD(I missed them)
New moves for Shermie XD
Athena(OMG that's the best Athena yet)
Kim's hcb+ A or C x 3 is back
Yamasaky's HSDM( but the again, who doesen't like that one?)
No Foxy (Weeeeeeeeee)
no Lin
NO Bao(Yahooooooooooooooooooooo)
No strickers (Yosha ^__~*)

Disapointments:
Mature(toned down)
K' still on the cart's cover
Anhell's new voice actor sawcks(ow my ears)
Vanessa(brutally toned down)
Iori(he NEEDS a New outfit)
Chang and choi (those two freaks need to rest for some time)
Two F%#@ Kyos (Eolith WTF.?!! X[ )
NO King (For The Love of SNK!!! blow_top )
No Heavy D (We Need him Back)
No Heidern (God it was good while it lasted)
No Hinako (I do miss that pettite, female sumo wrestler)
No Juhn (WTF?)

Final thoughts: You gotta own this KOF loco a very good one INDEED. buttrock

Special thanks to BonusKun for lending me his Neo(man after a few days of exposure to the Neo got kinda dangerous, I was beguining to call it: MY PRECIOUS *_*)

I agree with you on many points (especially on the return of the Orochi crew and the absence of King and Jhun). However, you forgot to mention a few other things:

No Xiangfei (YES!)
No Shingo (BOO! Bad move, Eolith!)
No Chizuru and/or Saishu in the BGs (looks like Eolith DOESN'T know everything about KOF)
No individualized endings (that's what made '98 worth playing over and over again; probably left out due to sheer laziness).

Furthermore, I disagree about Hinako's absence; she was a fairly useless character right from the start, so keeping her out was a good decision by Eolith (one of their few good ones). In addition, I agree that (useless) Chang and (cheap-ass) Choi should've been removed. Eolith had the best opportunity to make the best Korean team ever (Kim, Jhun, May Lee), but they decided to play "hometown favorites" and leave them in there while removing "fan-favorites" (King, Shingo, Jhun, and Lin) for reasons I don't even know (I'd love to hear an explanation as to why Playmore allowed this, and why Nona's still the artist for the game when much better talent [namely Hiroaki] is close by.

But enough about that. I'm hoping Playmore (now that the KOF programming license is out of [evil and stupid] Eolith's grasp) will ACTUALLY LISTEN to the fan demands and place certain characters in the KOF 2002 console ports (as well as KOF 2003 and beyond).

In short, yes, I'm angry, and until this situation is rectified/justified, I won't be able to settle down. END OF STORY!

Edit: Guess I went a little overboard there. In any case, I'll point out the things I like about KOF 2002 that haven't been mention by vishema:

-Billy and Yamazaki are back! (as are the Orochi gang; good news for old KOF fans, bad new for Iori)
-Music's a lot better than it was in 2001.
-The backgrounds look quite nice (again, better than 2001); the BG change in-between rounds is a nice touch.
-The in-game character art looks quite sharp (once again, better than 2001's rush job).
-Kim's new idle stance (too cool!).
-Gameplay's a lot simpler (no Strikers, no Armor and/or Counter modes).
-Finally, a Female Fighters team that DOESN'T suck!
-Choosing which team you get to fight before battle.
-Angel's new VA (she plays Haruko from FLCL, FYI).
-Most of the voices sound clearer than in 2001.
-The HSDMs (while most of them are useless, they're still a nice little feature).
-The cut-scenes look quite sharp (especially the final scene).
-Kusanagi (played by Kaneda's Japanese VA).

Here's hoping Playmore will pump a ton of extras into the KOF 2002 console ports (they should think of it as giving something back to the fans for all their years of dedication).

That seems to be a bad habit companies have picked up with fighting games....instead of giving us what we want, they give us whatever they feel like, and then cant figure out why less people are playing fighting games.

That's not entirely true. Sammy and Arc System Works have kept the entire Guilty Gear lineup intact from the beginning (with the exception of Kliff and Justice, but they were later added to the PS2-exclusive Guilty Gear X Plus), and Sega has maintained the whole Virtua Fighter cast since the first game (despite the fact that Taka-Arashi isn't in VF4, but then again, he was deadweight right from the start). Look at how popular those games are in Japan.

Moral of the story: Listen to the fans, and use their input to make a better game. Otherwise, you'll be doomed to lousy sales and a decreased reputation.

I'll have to give Guilty Gear a chance, no arcade around me has it though! I hate Virtua Fighter, but I see your point with that..I'll just apply it to Soul Calibur..lol

My bad though, I should have made my comment more specific to SNK and Capcom. Thanks for pointing that out.

Nah, Vanessa is toned up actually. And I love Angel's voice; suits her childish character.

And Jhun better be in the next fucking game!

Damn game being expensive still. I've been playing 99 MVS a lot and loving it. Hearing that 2002 is that much better really makes me wanna try it.

I'm sorry dude but IMO, Vanessa was more powerful in 2k1 why??, the puncher waving and vision were considerably toned town, The a version of the parring puncher was way better than forbidden eagle spock and most of her juggles are gone :(

And I still think that Angel's VA was way better in 2k1, stop this homenage madness *coughTetsuoCough* *CoughKanedaCough* C'on Angel was alot more original in 2k1 now she's some kind of experiment shame

Jhun better DAMN WELL be in the next game! He was one of the better "new" characters in the series. Seeing him get left out of two KOF games in a row was pretty harsh. Come on, Playmore, time to do what Eolith could not: listen to the fans, bring back some GOOD characters (Jhun, Eiji, Shingo, King), remove the deadweight (Chang, Choi, Chin), and STOP playing "hometown favorites" with the roster!

Angel's 2001 VA would've been better had it not sounded so muffled (then again, many of the new characters from 2K1 had muffled voices). I just think that her new VA sounds clearer and contributes to her personality more (BTW, Angel's 2K1 VA played Noa Izumi in Patlabor [both the TV series and the movies]; grab the DVDs if you can).

Vanessa does lost a lot of stuff, like full invincible waving, Rush S/DM juggle, OTG, and her 2-hit Jump C. However, she gain some new stuffs like now her slide is longer range, Close/Far D hits twice and is bufferable and hits short chars (something useful to combo against Choi), HCF+P does hella more damage and has back hit frames (makes her even more deadly as first char to fight), gained a useful DP+A move (very safe and is used for early anti-air, make her less vulnerable to jump attacks), and she has the infinite and cheap BC mode. I think Vanessa is the best character when it comes to the BC mode, enabling her to do 50% combo easily where it's either unblockable, hits high, or hits low. Hence, 2k2 Vanessa with BC mode is better than 2k1 Vanessa with strikers, IMHO.

If you just look at what she lost and what she gained, it's almost even. She only lost like a few extra combos, and her Rush S/DM juggle is neglectable since she can juggle with her QCFx2 DM anyway which does more damage than the Rush DM. And the BC mode obviously made her a combo monster. Overall, she lost the extra neglectable combos/hits but gained a lot of moves that can be used strategically (and now she doesn't die to Choi).

Kof 2001 rox:
speaking of king, shingo, and HSDM's, i wonder what theirs would be
King would probably flip-kick her opponent high into the air, and once he/she would come close to hitting the ground, she'd nail him/her with a barrage of kicks, finishing off with one large kick that would send her opponent to the other side of the screen.

Shingo would probably be able to wield flames very briefly and perform Kyo's "Orochinagi" DM.

Those are my guesses, at least.

Wow, suprised nobody mentioned the revamped kim. Sure it was mentioned he has his hcb+a or c, but damn, they completely changed his timing, archs, speed, and power. He is an aggressive powerhouse. He is set up for non stop attacks, and if you play him like that it is hard to loose. I was NEVER a Kim player until 2K2, what they did with him (and his insane ammount of animation) is incredible. A MUCH MUCH improved character over his 99-2K1 incantations. Bascialy a more aggressive 98 version.

hmm..well kims idle stance is only 10 frames like the 99-00 stance only redrawn. now the kicks and stuff is animated a lot. They should really work on KOF 2003 after 2001 and 2002 add a different storyline and different teams like a hero team ryo, kyo, terry (thinking of SNKvsCapcom again) nevermind. Playmore needs a real fan of the game to work on it. <img src="http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=608449" alt=" - " /> MY KOF 2002(for mugen)

Your mugen version looks interesting...but where is the mentor's team? (Saishu, Takuma, Heidern) You should also make a revenge team (Eiji, Lin, and Foxy) for a near complete cast.
