Post Neo Geo Hyper 64 - Hyper or hype?

Is it really worth the fuzz about it? I mean, SNK definitely is not the first company with a 3D board. The screenshots of various Hyper 64 games arenīt that great, too.

So, is it just another polygon pump or more?

Where was their HYPE about the hyper? Most people bash it, and have never played it.

Hype? Where is the Neo Geo Hypers hype?? I'll tell you, what other system will you ever see thee best fighting art styles like those of the Samurai Shodown series? I remember once upon a time when I played the first Samurai Shodown 64 on the arcade, it felt like heaven. Never in my life have I seen a fighting game creat such brilliant yet artistic styles of fighting. Never have I seen a samurai (like Hanzo) stick his hand in an opponents body to only break his spinal cord as part of a combo!!! (I love those X-Ray pics) It will never get better than this!!

Well... That sounds plausible. I used the phrase "hype" to describe the momentary flood of Hyper 64 boards in ebay or in some shops. Thought about buying one but I rather keep on diggin for a couple of Neo CDs. The current dollar ratings/values compared to Deutschmarks give the Hyper 64 a huge price tag here in Fritz-Country

I dont thibk Id call it hype.
The price point of the hyper systems has just fallen to rock bottom.
Many, many arcade distributers bought these systems shipped for like $2K.
They've been sitting on the forever, hoping to get their money back out of the flop.

Now that the value is down so much, that gamers are buying them from home, I think many of them are slapping them up for sale.
At least the can recoup what they paid for shipping, even if the $$ on the harware they have to write off as a loss.

That's just how I see it.

& For the recored, Ive played both Shodowns all the way through.
I thought they were great.
It's a shame hypers didnt go over well at all.

I am with Hanzo on this. The technology is not impressive, but the SS games are beautiful. I was also very fond of SS64 when it was in the NY Chinatown arcade. Shame they took it out. For me, owning these games is heaven...

It has taken me several years and hundreds of dollars. But, I have; Samurai Spirits(AES),Samurai Shodown 2(AES),Samurai Shodown 3(AES),Samurai Shodown 4(AES),Samurai Shodown 64(HYPER),Samurai Spirits 2(HYPER),Samurai Shodown(NGP),Samurai Shodown 2(NGPC).

Believe the HYPE(R)!

The Hyper NeoGeo 64 is fun to play. It shows some of SNK's games in a new light. (3-D)

Cool

Finally, I found some people who love SS64 as much as I do. Hanzo...true true man, nothing beats those X-ray shots when Hanzo's tearing people up. He's one of my best characters in that game. Well, this is my first post I found out about this forum from samuraispirits.net....I've been looking for some good SS64 comp in or around San Antonio. The only SS64 machine I've been able to find so far is at San Antonio College. Anyone know of any others?

Well...there was never anthing hyped for the hyper. There was no advertisement at all I guess.

But to answer the question...the Hyper is really hyper.
Yeah the poly-count is not as high as the PS2's. But who cares? The 2D-Power is great and contributes to the atmosphere in the 3D-Games.

The gameplay of the Hyper Samurai games is totally different to the AES games.
But it's perfect. The gameplay really rocks and these games play damn good and can motivate you for a really long time.
And also the atmosphere and design of the games is great.
If you like superior gameplay and don't mind if the gfx is not up to date go and get yourself a hyper with all four fighting games!

I was surprised by the gfx quality when I saw the Hyper in action for the first time. I expected a PS1 lookalike but it's not. The resolution is much higher and the charakters also look very good. More polygons than in the PS1-Hyper-ports and the textures also look nice. The 2D artwork is perfect and looks great.

Nowadays the Hyper's price is really low....I hope it won't be too late when I'm going to buy me one in december

Oh and besides...no system looks more exclusive than a Hyper Neo°Geo 64.
To call me AWESOME is an understatement!

Seems to have all been just hype. Don't think I ever saw one in the wild. Seem pretty easy to find the hardware as NOS kits still. And no one ever really seems to say much anything good about it.

It was all over arcades in Japan back in the late 90s.

Unfortunately for me I was not all over Japan arcades in the late 90s. Most of what I recall from the late 90s around here were Naomi stuff & sit down racers.

Buriki One is a decent game, has a strange control scheme but works well for it.

I sometimes see Mikado arcade stream it. They seem to be having fun with it, but the game looks quite stiff, not to mention that one arena displaying camera and coffee ads. Also, who bumps a thread from 2001, and why?

Have you ever seen the controls? You move with the buttons and attack with the joystick.

Yes, I have, and I get the idea behind them, but just by watching the matches, I get the feeling it's more about mashing and getting in first hits rather than precise execution of moves. That doesn't change the fact that I'd love to try it. I'm checking for a cheap one from Europe semi-regularly, because the weight kills the deal if it's from overseas. Plus, I've seen people in here het whole fighting game lots for the price I'd pay for Buriki in EU.
