I heard someone say make sure you get the mark 2 motherboard or second version. What is this? There are two versions of the hyper 64 motherboard? Any info would be appriciated. Thanks in advance!

The second version boards (which are Japanese, not English boards) are closer to straight JAMMA standards. On the 1st board type, there was extra wiring required for stereo sound. I am not sure if Mono was on the JAMMA pin outs or not, but I know that extra effort was required for stereo, at a minimum.

Also, I say closer to JAMMA because they are still not totally JAMMA. The case in point would be the 4th button. JAMMA is a 3 button standard, per player, and the Hyper uses 4. The nice part about this is that a Hyper plugs right into an MVS cab and all 4 buttons are immediately connected.

The one thing you still need to wire though, even if you are plugging straight into an MVS cab, is the test button. The test button is used to set the soft dips for the game you have loaded. Language, and difficulty for example, are selectable in the soft dips.

This really isn't a big deal, although for Fatal Fury, it is a little more necessary. The default settings for that game are just stupid. Each bout is only 1 round, the attract mode is silent and I think it is set to "really easy." Makes for a crappy game with the defaults so odd, so I would wire a test button. The Test for MVS is on a different pin and doesn't work with the hyper.

Anyway, the biggest diff is the sound. Like I said, I know you need extra wiring for stereo. Thing is, you may need wiring for any sound at all. I'm just not sure. My board is the JAMMA Japanese board, so I haven't had to worry about it.

On a related note, if you have a one slot neo geo and your jamma harness is wired to jamma standard + the 4th button than you do not need to move the test button at all. There is a switch on teh bottom of teh 2nd revision board..switch it from MVS to Jamma and you are good to go. The MVS setting is for multi-slot boards.

Also, the first version of the Hyper64 board requires extra wiring for the power supply. Which was corrected in the second version of the board.
Hello,
I hope I can add to this discussion as well as get a question answered. I have a 1st rev.
Hyper 64 and you won't get any sound from the jamma pins so you have to use the sound plug.
The real question is do I need to hook up power to that power port because The Hyper64 seems to be running fine by getting its power from the jamma harness.

If you can read German, there's a great site <a href="http://www.hardedge.de/index.php?inhalt=hng64_special" target="_blank">here</a> which covers this.

Basically, on a rev1 board, only connecting it to JAMMA will let it work, but if you don't wire up the extra power connections then after a little while (depending on how much you use it) it will die. Forever. So wire them up!!! You can just run extra wires to your power supply if you're using a Supergun.

Hello Stone,

Thanks for the reply, having no documentation when I first hooked it up I was really apprehensive about hooking up juice to that port but now I know. I'll go-ahead and run that power plug to my power supply form now on.

I checked out that Deutsch site and its one of the best sites I've see for this little known system. drool

Danke!

Kein Problem, mein Freund wink

Actually I was really impressed when I found it; not only is there a TON of info (and good-quality reviews of all 4 fighters) but I could understand most of it :D

All that school German being put to excellent use then :)

Warning; if you try to auto-translate these pages they come up very odd indeed in places, since the Germans use English words like 'Stage' which means 'steam-turbine' in German :D Just a quick warning wink

Indeed a good site with some nice insights on the Hyper 64. Almost all my questions answered:)

all but one: is it really worth getting?

I`m really interested in a setup like that but with the limited number of games and bad availability I wonder if it`s worth all the trouble.

[edit] already found some movies :) [/edit]

Briggs:
my link looks all sexy in German.
Hi Briggs,

Could you tell me when you are planning to add Hyper64 information on your web-site? I was told that you have pictures of some really nice Hyper64 cabs, but the hyper64 link on your site does not work :(

Yeah, I didn't need to hook up wiring for my test button either. It was just plug and play right into my candy cab :) .

The Trocadero Centre in London, UK has a copy of Metal Slug 4 in a cab that looks exactly the same shape as that, but MVS red. So I'd guess factory made but home-converted?
