Another 4-slot stuck in test mode

Hi guys,

I recently bought a non-working 4-slot off flea-bay. The boards were absolutely filthy so the first thing they had was a nice scrub and deep clean.

The next problem is that it wouldn't pass the memory test (VRAM fail). I initially replaced the SMD RAMs which didn't fix it because I should have changed the 5814s (n00b). Anyway, 5814s replaced = RAM check passed.

My current problem now, is that I'm stuck in the crosshatch of doom.

1, I've removed the battery which looked clean and no wetness.
2, Inspected the traces around the battery with no obvious damage or trace corrosion.
3, Checked ALL of the lines from ALL of the board connectors using this guide. All good.
4, Cleaned the cart slots using some emery paper and compressed air. I've tried different combinations of slot loading (I only have 2 carts) and nothing changes.
5, Checked dip settings.

I have noticed that a few of the traces on the top board have got some suspicious dark spots on them and was wondering if there was a pinout guide for the top board just like the bottom one?

Anybody else have any suggestions/tips/miracles please?

Kind regards,

Dave

So in the test menu, it doesn't show that dip 1 is on, right?

You'll need to check all the traces to the cart slots. If no cart is found, it will go to test.

Hi Neo Alec,

Thanks for the reply.

When I'm in test mode, I can switch the dips and the screen shows the right configuration. I've tried booting with all dips on and off but nothing changes.

I know the carts are good because they work in my 1-slot.

Like I said in my post, I'm concerned about the traces on the top board but I don't have any pin outs to aid in checking so I don't know what goes where for continuity.

I'd like to rule out bad traces on the top board (for piece of mind) before I resort to harsher cleaning of the cart slots or potential bad ICs.

Kind regards,

Dave

So, I've done some probing this weekend and have managed to create a pin out for the top board connectors. It was a pain in the a$$ and I nearly threw in the towel a couple of times but on the plus side, I managed to find 7 dead traces coming from CN10 which I'll attempt a repir on later...........

Anyhoo, for those that want to know or for future reference, please see below:

A happy ending for this thread,

I found 7 dead traces on the top board. 7 bodge wires installed = 1 fully working 4-slot :glee:

homr836,

I realize this is an old thread, but I was having trouble with what I believe to be the top PCB of a 4-slot and found your posting. I used your information on connector pin-outs to see if I have a similar problem. unfortunately, all my traces appear to be intact from the connectors. But I could not have ruled that out without having the benefit of your posting.

However, for future reference I did want to point out two errors I believe I found. The first is a simply a typo, but the second is important:
1. CN8 - A4 - A7 (7) should be F253 and not F523;
2. CN9 - A8 - should indicate N4+J4+E4+A4 (11)
