I was on eBay a few weeks ago and saw a American Neo Geo AES sell for 700 (not cib or anything) . I love my AES but man the prices are through the roof. I even put my American AES on eBay for $700 and today I had an offer for $650.

I was .1 seconds away from letting go of my Neo geo but the more I thought of it the more I knew I would regret it. Have you lately been thinking it’s time to let go of your beloved AES and games or will the Neo geo go with you to the grave?

I know a lot of people here have sold off their stuff, you guys chime in too. This isn’t a price speculation thread but more the emotional struggle of seeing stuff you love sell for a lot of money and being tempted.

I sold off all my games Aes, Genesis, Snes, Nes, Pc Engine etc in the last 3 years and never looked back. Finally getting to the consoles. Even sold off some other hobby stuff. I'm at a point were I'm content with just playing the games any way I can. Even if it's not perfect, it's fine. I'll get by.

If you're thinking too much about it you will regret it. I've been there. You will know when it's time to let go. If you're fighting with yourself don't do it.

Still got my gold system though. :)

You are right about that, I knew one day I’d get the urge to play my AES again or even collect for it again so it’s not going anywhere.

I have sold off my n64, ps1, and NES stuff a few years ago but I don’t miss any of it at all. I also cut out all games I don’t really like. It’s made me enjoy my collection more having no filler.

Do you ever miss the box art and carts hanging around? It sounds like it made you feel free of being owned by your possessions. Right on man!

I've had two AES consoles and a large stack of games over the years, gradually it went from games in boxes with manuals to just keeping loose carts I found in that time. I eventually let it all go. Why? I sat and played it all, I realized the magic was gone. That feeling you get of something fresh and new, it always fades. What remains is whether you truly enjoy the games, because beyond that, it's all just plastic shapes.

It may not be everyone's approach, but I've come to realize what that feeling of "this ship has sailed" is really like. You'll know it if you don't willfully ignore it. Take an objective look at your stuff. Do you love the games enough to keep delicate, fragile, aging hardware around? Is your passion still there? Or are you just holding onto faint memories of better times?

I've hung onto my MVS carts and one CMVS system for myself with a couple AES sticks. Sometimes I wonder if I should let those all go too.

I'm not at the point of selling my 'stuff' yet, but I understand the temptation. Last year I decided to sell my copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga and Burning Rangers for the Saturn when I saw what they were going for on eBay (I purchased them both when they were released, and just never got 'into' either title). I barely played them, so they didn't hold any nostalgic value. Nevertheless, I occasionally feel pangs of regret about selling Panzer Dragoon Saga, because it s currently 'the' grail title for Saturn, and because I think I might have actually played it one day.

None of us are getting any younger, and ultimately, what is the point of having these 'things'? They will be meaningless when I'm gone (my daughter certainly has no interest in them). I understand it on an intellectual level, but I'm just not ready to give them up.

What possessed you to sell off everything except your gold AES?

There is a little backstory behind the purchase of that gold system. I just thought it would be cool to hold on to it. Owned a brand new one as well which I sold to some guy in Italy for $900 like 5 years ago but I didn't care much for that one.

HMG pretty much nailed it for me. Once the magic is gone or begins to fade you have to decide whether it just makes more sense to just let it go. I swear this question gets asked at least every month from some member on any gaming forum.

I made fun of that dude in discord.

I must of missed that, go ahead and talk some shit here man I’m paying attention to this thread and I’m not even remotely intimidated by you.

You are all making good points I know someday my kid will dump off my stuff, probably at pennies on the dollar. Right now though I would sell blood or sperm before my sega genesis or turbografx collection.

I don't regret selling all my neo geo stuff. I also don't regret selling my X68000's. Just dump that shit, make some space and buy something you actually have a use for on a daily basis.

I’m a bit surprised how many of you guys have sold off your AES collection and non of you seem to regret it...

HMG- that was a very well written post, I know exactly what you mean about the new thing you buy loosing it’s luster. It’s a very temporary high and most of the stuff just sits after awhile.

Wait what? What are you talking about? I made fun of the dude for paying 700 bucks for an AES. I never said a thing about you.

For the record, I still have the AES I bought in 92 with the same copy of Samurai Spirits. If you wanna sell your stuff, sell it. I still play mine and even have friends over once in awhile to have a game night.

Cash out on the bubble, might as well, stuff is eventually going to be just like baseball cards and will just fade.

My deepest apologies kid panda, I greatly misunderstood your post! You know how this site can be sometimes with people attacking each other and I thought it was my turn to take a punch.

That’s very cool you still have your original system and copy of samurai spirts. Thanks for the advice, and I agree 700 for an American AES is funny. Thanks man

I mean, it's easier now then ever to let go. With flash carts being available for almost every console and emulation improving every year, why not let go? If you're someone who just wants to enjoy the games, now is the perfect time to do it without breaking the bank.

Most of the crowd here is older 30+ and maybe that has something to do with it. I'm on facebook and people still buying shit up like candy. Totally different crowd. Most of the members here have been there and done that.

With all the FPGA, emulation, ODE and flash cart options available these days, collecting and keeping original games is definitely an emotional, not a logical decision. I expect the value on all of it will plummet once current mid-lifers like me either die off or have to start selling things to afford our nursing homes and medical bills.

For the time being, I still enjoy original gear and use it enough to justify keeping it around, but I do have this feeling in the back of my head that one day I'll snap and sell it all.

Yeah it just takes up too much space and is too inconvenient. It's like still fumbling around with records or CDs when you can just have every song you like in FLAC format on a single machine. It's dumb.

What did you guys do with your profits once you sold off? Anyone get a couple of high end porn star hookers or buy a car? I was thinking I would put it towards my first house or a trip to Europe, if I ever sold every game and system I owned.

Over the past couple of years I sold all of my games except for my AES collection and two arcade pcbs that were gifts. I don't regret it one bit, in fact it's been quite liberating.

I'll probably sell my AES collection at some point too.

I need to get off my butt, and start trimming my collection. Some older systems such as NES and SNES still have sentimental value since those were XMAS gifts when I was a kid. But otherwise, the gaming was cool, but I'd rather have the free space in the closet. I have this weird thought that If I was to move again, I want to fit everything in the back of my car in one trip (Honda Fit). Big Furniture, I'd just sell locally and pick up again later as needed.

I’ve started to downsize a bit. I don’t buy games anymore unless I want to just physically have it.

I stopped buying anything CD based a long time ago. I’m moving to just using HDD, flash drives and ODEs for everything.

I have a CRT and i am thinking about sticking it in the closet, I have my Nes, SNES, Genesis, Famicom still connected to the crt but if I play those games I just use the flash carts in my FPGA clones. The CRT was still kept out meant originally for when I want to play light gun games, but honestly that hasn’t happened in literally 2 years when I got rambo for my Master System. it’s been used primarily as another tv for guests to play another game on when I have parties.

Once I have ALL my consoles running Their libraries all off some form of external storage, I’ll box up the games. It’s just easier to deal with packing them when that’s done rather than partially packing up the ones now that are more or less sitting doing nothing

Sold it all, flashcarts, cartridges the lot. The Neo core for FPGA was a godsend, and coupled with a good control panel I have tidy no fuss setup for everything. I can even put it through a CRT if I want. The Switch keeps it company but I'd bin the PS4 too if I didn't enjoy the odd Blu ray.

I'm not getting any younger and can't be dealing with faulty yellowed out hardware or cap issues. Don't know im saying that, I have bought a few synths with some of the proceeds lol

I sold everything off earlier this year, the final lot anyway as I've been wittling it all away over the past couple years. Cab, neo, consoles blah blah blah, the whole lot and I don't miss any of it. I mean it's all really cool stuff, great to have, look at and use but the magic of it for me has just completely gone.

Now I am content with a PC and a PS4, I aint missing shit.

I sold all of my stuff around 2015-16, because I noticed that I had little to no use for them any more, all of the stuff was packed up and collecting dust in a closet. The PS4, and the laptop for less graphically intensive/outsider games are fine for me.

Puerile shit or finally achieving home ownership by middle age? Tough choice.
