AES3-3 Click of death

Hey Guys,

Getting the click of death issue on this neo geo aes 3-3 i snagged off ebay. Had no power fixed that and also ended up testing the sram by swapping it into another system (tested both cxk5864's and the cxk5814) . With the console facing towards me on the left side of the cartridge socket slot if i press down while the console is on it can change the color/display thats occurring and depending on where i press even the clicking will stop. Same thing happens if i turn the board over and try the areas right underneath. Also if i touch the pins for the cartridge slot it can affect the screen as well going from yellow to black and white and what not,. I've tried retouching up all the points on the cartridge slot with a bt of solder but same issue. i've checked the area and i am not seeing any breaks or cut traces. I'm checking on the neo wiki and looking at different things for click of death i guess i gotta start checking for continuity from all these chips. By any chance does anyone know where i should look first? or provide a clear route for me to take. I do alright with electronics/soldering but a lot of it is foreign to me. Below is the backstory of what i have done up to now if you guys want to read. But the sram and the bios have sockets on them now. thank you for your time.

Back story
Need some guidance if possible. Bought a neo geo off of ebay that wouldn't power on. Turned out the traces had lifted off some components on the daughter board. wired them up and used a 5v 3a plug (reversed polarity to have center negative) to power it on. With no cartridge if i recall i got a blue screen which meant everything was ok i thought. Bought fatal fury off ebay as well but couldn't get it to work. Next I tried removing the bios to add a socket (messed up some traces friend of mine repaired it). Tried the diagnostic bios but couldn't get anything on screen. just pixelation and all. At this time i decided to buy another neo geo (aes3-6) and found out the fatal fury game was actually faulty but i did order 2 other games art of fighting and samurai spirits and i can get them to work on the aes3-6 no problem but i get pixelation and the clicking of death it seems on the aes 3-3. I tried to remove the cxk5864bsp chip to add a socket and i messed up like 3 traces haha but friend again fixed them for me and i was able to put sockets for the cxk5864's and the cxk5814's. I ended up doing the same for the aes 3-6. Once that was complete i did some swaps and all the chips from the aes 3-3 worked fine in the aes 3-6 diag bios indicated all passed.

Alright just adding info on here as a log for myself and for others. I tried checking most of the chips on the motherboard to see if they were at least getting the proper volts or any volts at all. So far they all gave 5.13 - 5.15v. The yamaha ym2610 seems to run rather hot when i leave it running. I know some youtubers check to see if the chip is hot but i never know why that is. (sorry not too good with electronics and tracking down these type of issues). I figure it runs hot because it has to do with the audio and the "clicking of death" the noise is coming from the system constantly restarting so the audio is making a pop noise and the YM2610 controls audio. I disabled the watchdog (what causes it to reboot to protect itself) and there was no more popping but still i couldn't see anything on screen just yellow. Not sure what else to do the pints on the cartridge slot change the screen around. I already touched up those points but maybe i should desolder and test or desolder/resolder and see if it does anything? really not sure where to proceed I guess i can look at the pinouts and schematics for the chips that affect video and see if i can get some continuity. welp guess that's it for now. You have a broken connection(s). Check the tracks /traces at the bios chip for continuity between ram chips and the 68000.
Anybody have that diagram handy?

Nice thanks for the response! I believe the diagrams are on the neo geo Dev wiki. I will try checking for continuity tomorrow and let you knowm .thanks again!!

This info is taken from NEO-AES3-6 and NEO-AES3-4 revision boards and should be valid for all boards that have the bios to the right of the cart slot. The older board NEO-AES which has the bios above the cart slot is partly different.

Thanks so much for this. by following this i found at least 2 issues. Number 17: Pin 64 on the NEO-D0 is not getting continuity with Pin 4 off of the LSPC2 or Pin 13 from the 43256 but there is continuity from the LSCPC2 to the 43256.

Also checking GND all GND points were fine except 2 GND points from NEO-E0 point 60 and 61 do not seem to be grounded. I will try to see if i can track down the trace for these or can i just jump two wires to ground?

Thank you so much so far for the help. I was a bit confused by Steps 1, 3, 11, 20, 38, 39, and 40. I guess for the GND you just wanted me to check all the chips had ground and for the 5v you wanted me to check if they had the 5v from the vcc points which i did initially. for number 20 pin 59 on the schematic shows as N.C for me. Anyway if those numbers like 38, 39 and 40 were indicated for something else please let me know. right now i'm going trace hunting. thanks again!

Got it working! Glad I double checked before I started messing with the Neo-E0 there's 3 pin outs for it mine matches the MV2F off of the neo geo dev wiki which uses the same ground as the NEO-G0 and NEO-D0 as well as the others i suppose. So i left ins 60-61 alone since the proper ground pins had continuity. I ran a wire from the LSPC2 Point 4 to the NEO-D0 point 64. Diagnostic bios indicated all tests passed popped in unibios and samurai showdown came on fine no audio issues video was perfect and also i got audio through headphones. Thanks so much!!!

I'm not sure I'm understanding BUT pin 1 should be receiving 5v so what you do is touch your multimeter to to pin 1 and there should be a blue capacitor to the left between the bios and z80 chip.One leg on that capcitor is ground and the other is getting 5v.the leg closest to pin 40 of the bios is getting 5v and the leg closest to pin one of the bios is getting ground. That is one way to verify the bios is getting 5v and ground. If I touch pin 3 of the bios I should be getting continity at the LSPC2 chip, pin 21 and at NEO-GO,pin 50. The connections should go full circle and if they are not going full circle ,there is a break somewhere along the track.
You always want to check for breaks first before you assume a component has gone bad.

If you ever decide to clean that up you should go with 30 gauge kynar wire-wrap wire which would reduce the clutter considerably.
