I spent the past few days working through this problem, but still not sure why it has no audio.

What I do know is the Z80 pin 22 WR is HIGH and the NMI (17) and INT (16) are low. all 8 data lines are stuck as well as address lines 8>15.

I have checked the 245 and 244 chips on the top and I can see they are passing the correct data when the other slots are working. I have removed these chips, tested them and put sockets in. All connections are ok.

Connections from the cartridge are also ok.

sdmrd looks good, but sdrom and sdrd0 also stop pulsing.

I ran the diagnostic bios with the m1 chip and it says z80 dead or expected was not the correct data.

I checked the as244 and 245 on the lower board. the ls32, ls139, ls257 x 2 and these are ok.

I have not checked the 6116 ram, but its ok with the other slots.

so when a cart is in slot 4, data and half the address bus just stop, but i am not sure what to check next.

My notes show the z80 data lines (SDD0-7) on slot 4 goto the 245 chip @ P5. Have you verified that gets enabled and the other slots 245's for SDD0-7 get disabled?

Yes it was one of the first things I checked. Enable is low and dir (pin 1) is pulsing with data. all of the other 3 245 are high I just double checked this, that is why I took a few days to reply. All of the 244 are also enabled on pins 1 and 19.

I spent a bit more time on this and setup slot 1 and 4 with game carts so I could probe and look for changes. As soon as I startup up slot 4 the sound stops, but it then never works again so when I go back to slot 1 the sound is still not working. I am 100% sure it's not something on the top board. I have checked and probed just about evertying with regards to the slot connections and all chips around slot 4. All the 153 and 253 chips are seeing the data to say what slot is working and they are not showing anything when the sound stops. the 138 in the bottom left is also seeing the two bit binary and decoding to 4 seperate lines.

Its likely the slot 4 issue is crashing the z80, which causes other slots to stop working. Its my understanding that the only slot specific lines coming from the cpu board are going to that 138, which then is responsible for enabling the correct 245s and picking the right inputs on the 253s for output. The address and data lines going from the cpu to/from slot board should all be shared among the slots and its just the 245s/253s which dictate which slot's data lines are enabled.

Its unclear to me what would cause a slot specific sound issue on the cpu board if the other slots are working and the 138 looks right. Best I could suggest is removing the cart shell and logic probing the M1 chip from the solder side of the CHA board while plugged into slot 4. Perhaps that will give some additional insight.

If you haven't done so, you should also try clearing your backup ram. Sometimes that can fix sound issues, but I have only heard of that when the sound issue is effecting all slots.

I have done all of that. The M1 chip has stuck data lines and it goes all the way back to the z80 like I said in the first post. I cleared the Ram after I Upgraded the unibios to 3.3. The z80 is 100% crashed I am sure.

ok, I have my scopt setup and looking at the pins of the z80.
Slot 1 has puzzle bobble and slot 4 turf master. I am going to switch between slot 1 and 4 and look at the control lines of the z80.

looking at the signals that come into the z80

INT,NMI,RESET,BUSRQ and WAIT

INT and NMI both go low when the sound stops. The other three stay high and do not change.

NMI goes to the 74ls pin 5 and the INT goes to the Yamaha pin 56 IRQ.

From a Z80 guide

Some of the Z80's control pins must also be set for the CPU to run.
Specifically, pin 16 (INT), 17 (NMI), 24 (WAIT), and 25 (BUSRQ) should be
connected directly to the positive end of the power supply. Because these
pins are all active-low (meaning they take effect when their input voltage is
low, and are disabled when the input voltage is high), this will turn them
off. (If they are left on, they may interfere with the CPU and stop it from
running.)

This is amazing, thanks. I really am stuck at the moment so will take a good look at this.

No problem, hope it helps. This is what I have for the slot board.

Voltage is fine across the board, I have probed so many chips on my scope I can say with confidance.
