So pretty random beer fueled thought. I recently picked up the GI Joe animated movie from the late 80's, and can't help but notice that a lot of the Cobrala kingdom buildings look so much like the alien structures, and honestly the aliens as well, in Cyber-lip. Where did this aesthetic style originate? It's definitely a bit HR Giger, but it seems to draw a lot from some other influence that is more organic design as well.
Anybody have some insight on this?

Looks a bit like some of Moebius' stuff. I am sure some of the talented artists on here know better.

Best ones I could easily grab off the web, I noticed a lot of other little overlapping similarities while watching the movie, but I ain't got teh screen grab skillz.

I was really just kind of wondering if this was all kind of a rip from an earlier anime, and if so which one or series.

It's crazy how much power and influence movies have over our culture. If there was no Alien things would have turned out much different.

Almost all of these are inspired by nature. It's not some original concept.
The GI Joe movie specifically had a villain who's lair was organic structures. HR Giger said he was inspired by nature.

The prehistoric symbiotic biotech, & related organic weaponry that drives much of the plot in the manga "Bio-Booster Armor Guyver" does interestingly predate the '87 G.I. Joe movie by a few years.

Alien was 1979.

kid_aphex once said the opening for the GI Joe movie was one of the greatest things in the world or something to that affect

I recommend René Laloux' three animated features: Fantastic Planet (1973, with Roland Topor), Time Masters (1982, with Moebius, a.k.a. Jean Giraud) and Light Years (1987).
