One of the most memorable voices I've ever heard. I was a massive WWF fan in the late 80's and early 90's and it wasn't WWF without Mean Gene Okerlund. I hope he rests in peace.

...on a related note, we had one of his fast food restaurants around here for quite some time...it did finally close though.

RIP. He was just one of those guys who somehow quietly became the most iconic at what he did.

Quietly.

Perfect description. In an industry of over the top, in your face characters, he was a calm voice that was always here. He was showy, he wasn't loud...yet he was great at his job. There's a reason why he lasted so long in the business.

There is more information to his death than is being reported on TV/Internet.

You can get the scoop on his death by calling 1-900-909-9900
($2 for the first minute, $0.50 each additional minute. Children under 18 get your parent's permission first).

That's exactly what my first thought was. Mean Gene WAS the Hotline.

I'm actually shocked he was still alive to this point. RIP.
Yeah, the news here for me is that he was only 76. That doesn't seem possible. He looked like he was going on 60 when he was interviewing Hulk in 1984. The numbers don't add up. He should be closer to 96 not 76.

Mean Gene is one of the things I remember most about my time with pro wrestling as a kid in the 80s. The guy always brought an air of legitimacy and class to the proceedings and grounded all of the ridiculous things going on around him. The only man alive who could keep a straight face during some of those whacked out Macho Man promos.

RIP to a legend.
