Yo all
Long time lurker, first post here ^^

Last year I've acquired a strange Neo aes

It comes with an armored mobo, works with 5v psu, and strange things it is mentioned 4.1
Also it got an smd bios, like Neo CD one

No serial, or etiquette on the back

little rar with pics
http://fafangus.chez.com/image/41/29/41-1.rar

To note, grey color on the bottom of the plastic shell, and the 2 thin layer of transparent plastic where the mobo rest

Talking with friend, it may be a test console, proto one (?)

Talking also with Furrtek, he as updated the NeoGeoDev wiki :
https://wiki.neogeodev.org/index.php?title=NEO-AES4-1_board&t=20181229113420

Do you know more, to understand what that's really?

Thanks

interesting "94-1-24" after the revision...I doubt it's a date, as it would be too early..not an expert but I don't think other revisions have such digits after the revision?

Most ICs have 93 as the manufacturing date so it's not far fetched to assume that the system was in fact made in 94. First time a see a home system like that...

Nice find! Where did you get it?

far from the SMD bios, maybe other components could have been shared with the NGCD? same year, maybe an attempt to optimize production?

Just buyed on YAJ, seller said that the unit was heavy, and without serial, so I just thinked it was a 3.3 with the classic metallic shell

One strange thing is that they apparently never released it. It does not make much sense that they took the time to design a new board and never released it, even more knowing that it would have been very cost efficient due to the components same as in the NGCD. Moreover the AES had not yet reached its max. popularity in 94, so the demand was still high. The missing serial label is another sign that confirms even more that it would be a proto.

Hi all
I dumped the 4.1 bios, thanks to DS multi's AES (without the need of unsolder the chip), after checked it with a MAME team member, it's a classic AES jap bios

Source Code

ROM_START( aes )
ROM_SYSTEM_BIOS( 1, "japan", "Japan AES" )
ROM_LOAD16_WORD_SWAP_BIOS( 1, "neo-po.bin", 0x00000, 0x020000, CRC(16d0c132) SHA1(4e4a440cae46f3889d20234aebd7f8d5f522e22c) ) // AES Console (Japan) Bios

Thanks for sharing that but it's a pity you had to damage the shield to remove it. Could you not have de-soldered it instead?

Saw this on JAmes' Instagram, great find! Anyone know any history behind it, as in if it's a proto or dev unit?

Thanks, arf,in fact the shield was holded by screw, but there were masked by the shield (!!), so I'll do it as I could, just to not broke anything on the mobo, if I knew I'll do it in another way

Pity but thanks for trying.

It still uses a CXA1145 which is surprising, I thought they would update it to a 1645 or better. But judging by all the filtering caps, I wonder how clean the audio is compared to earlier factory releases.

It does look like they cut some corners with this PCB design. Would be interesting to see/hear a comparison.

It's kind of a shame they didn't go ahead with this. Did they just continue manufacturing 3-6 for a while instead? SNK made the determination at some point that there wasn't a demand for more AES systems. They continued to produce some 1-slot MVS boards after this.

It was definitely an odd decision to keep the 3-6. The 41 seems cheaper to produce.

All the pictures of 3-6 boards I can find have 93 as the manufacturing date on the components. I couldn't find any that had a later date.

I had made a video in 2017 of the 4.1 (xrgb 2 + ossc + c2 + Xcapture1)
https://youtu.be/-7UJTUaxelM
Rgb signal very difficult to handle only with the ossc, I have to couple with the xrgb2 to stabilize it
On crt TV, the 4.1 works like a charm
Also it works with either 5v or 10v psu

I had always wondered why SNK never made an AES with more SMD components, something more in line with the smaller 1-slot MVS boards. This is a real treat to see, thanks for posting.

..so, is it fair to say that the home console has been manufactured between early 1990 and early 1994?

On most websites it is said that the AES kept being manufactured until 1997. This seems strange as if they were manufactured from 1990 to 1997 and had 350k units made it would mean that the factory pushed out around 137 consoles per day which seems a bit low.
