Please could anyone link me to any articles that are worth reading about the series.

I played a lot of 94 on Saturn bitd.

Currently enjoying 97 (on Ps4) which I love.

I'd love to learn more about this particular series.

You need to play KOF '98. It's the best in the series.

A lot of folks love KOF 2002 as well.

KOF 95 97 98 02 Definitely the Best!
But as the story line goes from 94 to 97 its just the best.
It ended in 97 as in 98 its a dream Match but non the less the best KOF imo.

If you want more of the same, then pick up '95 (best old school part) & '98 (best all around). If you want something new, go straight to '99 and check out the Striker mechanics, it's a love-it-or-hate-it new gameplay element. Take '02 only if you have mastered the SNK parts ('94 - 2K). The graphical downgrades are less annoying, if you can truly enjoy its fighting engine.

KOF94 for the Saturn actually exists.

my cousin's sister's daughter's boyfriend used to work at Nintendo. He knows about it.
