Why is Fatal Fury better than Street Fighter?

Playing fighting games for the story makes as much sense as watching porn for the story to me.
It's not what you play it for, but it adds something. Like maybe all you care about is tits and ass, but it's nice if a girl has a face as well. Maybe you don't need it, but some of us enjoy it.

Agreed. I understand why some people care about it, I just personally don't take it too seriously.

If given the option to play either series, I would play Fatal Fury. I respect Street Fighter for what it is and acknowledge SFII for being the overall better package, but I never quite got into Street Fighter like I did SNK games.

On the Genesis I had Street Fighter II and Fatal Fury 2. SFII was a revelation. It was so great to finally have that game on the Genesis, as my friends had been playing it on the SNES for the longest time. However when Fatal Fury 2 came out, I ended up playing that way more than SFII.

There were things in FF2 that were simply incredible. The dual planes concept really added to the gameplay. Also, the interactive stages like when fighting Axel Hawk, how you can knock him back onto the electric ropes.

I actually feel the Genesis version of FF2 mirrored the faster smoother gameplay we have come to expect from modern fighting games more so than many games at the time. Fatal Fury 2 on AES looks incredible, but has more drawn out animations, and the jumps between planes are slower. On the Genesis (maybe due to the dropped frames of animation) the gameplay is snappier, and hard punches/kicks don't linger as long like they do on AES. This contributed to a faster more cohesive rhythm, which is possibly why I played it so much over Street Fighter II.

Fatal Fury kind of ripped Streetfighter off in the first place. Even had the same world map and similar music on that screen. I heard some guy from the original SF team helped make FF so maybe that's why.

I enjoy Fatal Fury but SF is better. Super SF 4online is one of the best ever competitive games.

If you like FF more than SF it's probably because you played it first or only played SF1

Just my opinion, but personally I think SF2 Champion Edition is the best fighting game ever made. I think it has the perfect balance of speed, variety, characters, moves etc. Although many Neo Geo fighting games were far better to look at, I haven't yet played one that I think is a better game. I also don't think any of the later Street Fighter games improved on it either, they were just cashing in on the brand. SF2CE is the one I always go for.

After spending some time with RBFFS again last night, I can honestly say FF is on a whole other level.

You just dont get that kind of enjoyment out of street fighter.

Dont get it wrong though, just because its inferior doesn't mean its not a good fighter, or that you cant have fun playing it.

Some games are some games arent. Garou is pretty much better than any street fighter and I love the real bout games. The original stuff though never compared to sf2 to me. I also love the alpha and 3 series. Sf has kinda tarnished its name with shit games like 4 and 5 though.

Couldn't the same be said for the reverse?

Maybe but I just remember the first FF being very disappointing compared to SF2. You could only pick from 3 characters. Whereas SF2 was mind blowing from the off and had more iconic and varied character designs (e..g Blanka, Dhalsim etc). I think it was more that FF got closer and closer in quality to SF with each installment.

I like SF better, but that's what I played first and remember specifically going to the arcade for. I like SFIICE (before the 'turbo') and Alpha 3 the best. SSFII is cool, and I remember it's release with the giant screen and pedestal controllers, but I didn't like the intro of combos into that game.

but fatal fury 1 was more of a response to street fighter 1 not sf2

Which version of SF2CE are you referring to? The arcade version of SF2CE is different from the home versions- bosses are more powerful and have better combos.

I didn't think Turbo was that much better than SF2CE- it had more speed if you prefer that (some people don't), and an extra special move for most of the characters. But it wasn't like the bootleg versions of SF2CE, where you could do a dragon punch or fireballs in mid-air (for better or worse, but I'm sure they could have made aerial fireballs work well in SF2T). And the bosses (especially M. Bison) were way toned down in SF2T, compared to the arcade version of SF2CE. So it was no longer as much fun to play as the bosses. And it's not like SF2T had much character balance anyway, if that's what they were going for- characters like Ryu, Ken, Zangief, and Guile still dominated.

IMO SSF2T is the best SF2 game, as it has the best character balance, and more AI difficulty than the other games. But Guile is toned down a lot in that game.

I was lucky enough to have an actual SF2CE arcade machine in my bedroom in the late 90s, I bought it in 1998 for £55 from eBay before MAME came along. It was a generic cabinet, but legit JAMMA board. So to me, that is and always will be the real deal, definitive version. It was a very tough game, even after owning it for years I still found Vega/Balrog very had to beat (on hardest difficulty setting of course.) Sadly I don't have it any more, so now I play the Saturn version which is IMO the best arcade port and best controller for the game.

I also didn't find the faster speed of later versions any benefit or more enjoyable.

I agree with the above posts.

While SSF2T is technically the better game (and still played competitively today for a reason), I think that from a more "casual" point of view, SF2CE was perfect. Turbo was made as a damage control form for all the bootlegs which were made which had their speed wildly increase, but I like the CE speed just fine.

Yes I remember my local arcade had a so-called "Black Belt Edition" hack of CE in about 1993 which was stupidly fast, special moves in mid air, mutliple fireballs etc. I never really played it much to be honest, preferred the original versions.

I think it's really sad what SF has become since IV. Maybe that's a thread for Unrelated.

Everyone's gonna laugh at me, but I think it really is a disgrace to the series to throw all the lore out of the series and just basically have it be Street Fighter II in 20XX.

I'm with you on this one, 100%.

SF went downhill from SFIV onwards.

The ambiguities in the thread title really throw it off.

Fatal Fury Special, being the pinnacle of the series’s popularity, wasn’t as popular as SF2CE. FF1 wasn’t even as popular as SF2WW. And when SF1 came out, FF didn’t exist yet.

I would say I prefer KoF as a series to SF, although it’s close, with Alpha 2, Alpha 3, and 3S giving me a lot of enjoyment.

But Fatal Fury not so much. I enjoyed RBFFS, and was okay with RBFF2, even though it felt incomplete, but KoF had overtaken FF pretty much immediately.

I played FF1 for a time and loved the look and feel, but it didn't compare to the brilliance of SF2. But when I purchased FF2 brand new BITD, everything changed. It still is my favorite of the series. Got the soundtrack too.
