Move to Detroit. It's so awesome now. All these guys from Brooklyn moved there. New buildings keep popping up seemingly everyday.

Oh yeah, it's becoming just as expensive as BK, no cross that, there are some outskirt areas that are affordable in BK, you can't live in the outskirts of Detroit.

At least you are close to Caltrain station and walking distance to AT&T Park if you are into baseball.

*alright* guys...I said fuck it, took an apt in downtown SF, mission-bay...not bad as tenderloin, feels safer/way less junkies. Close to the Caltrain station, so I can take the "bullet" (...) train to SJ few times a week... wish me luck, it's crazy expensive but after ~4 years in Raleigh I feel like I need to go back to a city...worst case, it's just a year (^_^!)

OOOOHHHHH THAT MURPHY!!!!!

for the uninformed (if there are any):

Eddie Murphy played Axel Foley who was a Detroit cop in Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills Cop

And

Peter Wells played Alex Murphy who was Robocop, based in futuristic but still dystopian Detroit as a Detroit cop

Mind fuck

Alex and Axel, Murphy and Murphy

The Bay Area is way too expensive, unless you are getting into a blue chip tech company like Apple, Google or Facebook.

That being said, I just moved away from there about 7 months ago. We were in Santa Clara paying $2500/mo for a 2bd/2ba (900 sqft) apartment. Santa Clara is about 30 mins away from downtown San Jose, it's a quiet suburb with a bunch of newly built apartment communities. It's safe, and sleepy, not much to do there tbh. But it's cheaper than living right in San Jose.
$2500 is a month salary, how many do you guys earn???

Housing in San Francisco and the Bay Area is extremely expensive, look at these figures:

I've heard guys making six-digits in some parts of California and they're still kind of living paycheck-to-paycheck.

I thought about moving to Oakland 3 years ago, passed when I realized it was not the "Brooklyn of SF" as was promised. I think the Bay Area in general is more expensive than living in NYC. The boroughs (not counting Staten Island) interconnected by the subway and bus system make it so you can live on the outskirts of Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx and a ... um ... a semi decent rate.

That shit doesn't exist in the Bay Area. Fuck that, unless you want to live in the slums.

The problem is in large part due to the local government unwilling to tear down buildings and develop. So instead of using a space where land developers could build a high rise apartment, there are just a few houses instead. Which results in a shitty urban sprawl. Couple that with some of the best tech companies in the world located there and, baby, you got a stew goin'.

Yup, i was one of those. My salary was over 100K, but none of that money I could save due to the cost of living in the Bay Area. It was ridiculous. Yeah, you get a higher salary there, but it all goes to bills.
This is why a lot of the tech companies grant you RSU’s over a vested time... “the golden handcuffs” we call it. So at least at the end of your time there, you’d walk away with a good amount of blue chip stocks as your “savings”.

I looked at the other cities and those prices are rediculous! $1000+ for a rental place.......isn't buying a house cheaper? Or doesn't it work like that in America? Can anyone explain that to me?

House prices in the bay area aren't very affordable either. I live about a little over an hour from San Francisco. I'm pretty sure you can't buy a home in the area for under $500,000. The home costs get higher as you get closer to San Francisco or Oakland. There are a lot of people who commute 2+ hours each way to afford to live out here.
