AES or CMVS + cables

I'm settled on a 14" Sony PVM for my desktop and I need to decide on an AES or CMVS and cables. Is one or the other better for audio/video performance?

I don't want to use a cartridge adapter but I'm ok with expensive carts because I'll only be buying shmups. Anything else I should consider?

Will I need to buy any cables or cable adapters?

I would go with MVS.

MVS will have better video if your supergun is done right. Also a lot more reliable and cheaper to replace. Some AES motherboard revisions need traces cut to fix jailbars iirc, and some like mine (Revision 3-4?) need capacitors in the audio circuit to prevent buzzing since SNK forgot to put them in.

If you do go with an AES, Voultar is making a RGb bypass board for mvs/aes. It is supposed to fix some noise issues/sharpness on AES/MVS. How much of an improvement it is over a typical RGB bypass remains to be seen.

The Neo CD has the best audio/video performance.

Ouch, no Blazing Star, Prehistoric Isle 2, Strikers, or Andro Dunos on the Neo CD according to the Master List on this site. The first two are must haves for me. Plus I don't think the NG:DEV.TEAM stuff is available for CD.

These are the only CMVS units I can find but I can't figure out if they do real RGB output:

https://www.arcadeworks.net/omega-neo-geo-mvs-home-console
http://www.neotropolis.net/33701.html

So for MVS I would need a CMVS and a Supergun? I'm not sure how that works.

This page has a table which shows there's a sweet spot for serial numbers with the best RGB from an AES:

https://www.neogeokult.com/articles-us/ng-picture-quality-p2/

But I think that won't matter if I use an RGB bypass board. Are those available yet?

No, A Cmvs is a Consolized MVS which does not require a supergun. Works just like a home console. It's a custom modified MVS. A regular MVS unit would require a supergun if you would want to play on your TV. If you plan on buying the original carts than your best bet is the MVS since they are much cheaper. Talk to Xian Xi (Jamma Nation X). He pretty much makes the best CMVS out there.

I think cmvs with neosd is the best combo in terms of performance, flexibility, and price.

Andro Dunos was released after the fact on CD by shady French company Neo Conception International. They supposedly got permission, but who knows if that's actually true. But either way, you can play that one on a CD.

As for a CMVS, there are two go to sources. The Omega Entertainment Machine from Arcade Works or Xian Xi's Jamma Nation X.

In the long run it still may be cheaper to get the CD AND a CMVS if you're going to buy legit copies of games. The price differences on some shooters between MVS and CD are bigger than the cost of a CD console itself.

Or just get a NeoSD.

Real RGB output as opposed to what? Fake RGB output? You really should do more homework before you spend a crapload of money on things you clearly do not understand.

With so many fakes flooding the market, you can never be too safe.

Great tip regarding JNX. I like how his CMVS has a dedicated RGB output port. Anything I should request for the build?

Well First I would ask him if he could build one for you. He is usually pretty backed up so you might have to wait months.

Just don't get that cheap pos aliexpress cmvs. Go with either a JNX CMVS, Omega CMVS, or grab a HAS supergun/JNX/Windy gaming.

If you need RGB out a modded (if needed) AES will work just as well as an MVS.

Neo Alec, don't all AES consoles do RGB output, although at different levels of quality based on the serial number?

noir, I'm definitely interested. Is it a JNX?

Yes, but it's mostly related to the motherboard revision, and the ones with issues can be fixed.

You are like someone just joining the hobby who studied up just enough, but read some good and not so good information.
