I don't think an over-the-top "evil" arena rock band for the modern era is a bad idea on paper.

I just haven't liked what I've heard, and I don't find the imagery intriguing at all.

Maybe I should give the rest (older?) of their catalogue a chance?

You really should. Each album is quite different. Start at the beginning (Opus Eponymous).

Their live shows are great as well. They opened for Maiden last year and are doing a solo tour this year.
