When does a collection become a collection?

Just noticed a member selling the last of his collection, a handful of games, and it got me thinking. When does a bunch of stuff you own become a "collection"?

For instance, I have about 10 switch games, is this a collection? I have a few cupboards worth of canned food. Why is this not a collection of food?

It becomes a collection when start acquiring/keeping things you don't actually use or enjoy, only for the sake of having them.

from my own past experience, collecting involves having a criteria - which goes from a person who owns 2 things - to a completist who owns a whole set of things.

I had a small select SFC and Saturn collection and I really enjoyed building it. it was before all the hype and hunting down hidden gems meant taking the time to research and try one's own luck. great times.
these days I am seriously considering building up a collection across various systems of games that have a certain thing about them which I appreciate.
to me collecting involves curating, having the pieces work together at least for one's self. but that is me, others may have other criteria, but criteria is fundamental

You have a small collection of Switch games. The food is not really a collection because presumably you will be eating it at some point.

It's just a state of mind. Do you consider yourself a collector of food ? Or a collector of games ? You could even have a game collector soul without any games, but that would be a bit dumb.

Exactly.

I sadly have a family member who is exactly like this, and her husband is too. They collect all kinds of stuff, and while they have a large house, it's a ungodly mess. Old cameras, a massive game collection that will never be used (I literally counted five SNES systems in a single storage box that probably where there for years, along with a boxed Atari Jaguar, boxed Ninty consoles, boxed Commodore stuff, Nintendo merchandise from the 80s, etc. etc.). Thousands of CDs, hundreds of records, walls of AV equipment, all sorts of action figures... The problem is I really like them and don't want to alienate them by confronting them about it, but I seriously fear they'll end up like the many stories you read online or see on TV, even though they seem happy despite it all.

I'd agree with heihachi but don't we all have things that we've acquired and yet don't actually use or enjoy? Perhaps we did but it's just packed up in the closet? A box or so whatever but if you're filling rooms with the shit and buying more and more anyway... well yeah you've got a problem.

A few cupboards of canned food is not a collection. Even if they are different brands and types of canned food, they have no collector value, and very little intrinsic value, probably very little sentimental value to you, and their value will probably not increase over time.
If you had a cupboard full of very old and rare canned food, or canned food that had been owned by Elvis Presley (i.e., that has provenance), it might be a different story. But in that case the food would probably not be edible, anyway. If it is just common cans of food from the supermarket, that you have in the cupboard, with the intention of eating, then it isn't a collection.

One of my goals is to get rid of as much collectible stuff as possible and keep the bare minimum.

I'm gonna agree with NeoSneth, sometimes I find myself buying something just to add it to the pile, whether it be a game, music, toy, or book, not because I particularly want it all that much. As I run low on storage space, I get more choosey, but I still buy a lot of shit that I don't really need. Every now and then, I'll do a purge, but, then I just end up filling that empty space with new shit and I don't really get anywhere.

It goes like this. Lets say you like dog rape and you buy this cute little dog rape statue. A bit later you see another one in the same style that would look good with the dog rape statue you have, so you buy it too.

One day someone sees your two dog rape statues thinks you must be into dog rape statues and then as a gift one holiday they get you another dog rape statue. That's when you have a collection.

Basically, the rule is, once you have enough of something (in this case dog rape statues) that you can to put on a shelf and make a youtube video in front of, you have a collection. On a side note, if one's collection becomes large enough, they may actually become immortal. So I've been told.

So you’re saying you didn’t want that dog rape statue for Christmas.

Why is a pair not a collection?

A pair is more than one which could constitute a collection, but you wouldn't say 'play with my collection of balls', you'd say 'Play with my pair of balls'.

I guess the differences is between being cool or being a faggit.

Collecting is an instinct, like your instinct to fuck, only now we are served substitutes and collect memories or fuck internet porn. There's no difference between the 'autistic' and the 'non-autistic' guy, i.e. it doesn't matter if you collect video games or vinyl, travels or money. It only becomes a collection, when you start questioning it. Prior to that, it's just satisfying the primordial parts of your brain. Like with any other aspects of life.
