Cleaning PCB rust link inside

So my question is how do I clean this thing, it's a Namco 256 that had Tekken 5 in it.

this was a freebie. I was told who ever had it let it get wet. I tested it and it boots up with the sounds then goes into an error. I was told it was the DVD drive but I'm thinking it's the battery which as you can see was rusted out.

holy shit that’s bad...

I’d start with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and a brand new toothbrush. Scrub gently in circular motions and see what cleans off. It might take forever to finish the job. You could try “electronic contact cleaner” too...never used it but I’ve heard it’s an option. I just like alcohol myself.

That’s so bad, it might be a candidate for the dishwasher. But I wouldn’t spend forever on it unless you like the challenge...that board looks properly screwed

Battery could have leaked, damaged traces, etc.

On the bottom of the pcb there are so many chip legs that are straight rusted out completely. You’d have to desolder, clean, and resolder at the minimum.

To say “it got wet” was an understatement lol

I don't think your even get half that off, honestly man I would just move on. That thing sat outside for years to get that far gone.

Edit: I guess if you really want to try I would get a small tub and soak it in some "simple green" for a couple days. Then go straight to dish washer. (Remember to not do the drying cycle or put any detergent in it.) I also wouldn't recommend scrubbing with a brush before you soak & run through dishwasher as bad as it is. Because you are just going to grind all those rust & whatever particles that are on it deeper into the board and possibly futher damage traces or other things.

I don't really have any other projects going on aside from sourcing a new PSU and wiring for the two Tekken 5 cabinets I have. So I'm gonna try to clean what I can from this, replace the battery and hope it works. If not I have 5 other 256s to use the T5 in.

Some simple green, brush, and a hose goes a long way. Just make sure to take off any socketed chips or batteries.

I would probably try submerging it in some non acidic rust remover like Evaporust or WD-40 Specialist rust remover for a day or 2 and see how it looks after that.

I would recommend spot treating it vs dunking it. Contrary to popular belief, IC chips are not water proof and can be slightly porous resulting in water ingress.

including the wd40 suggestion (spray on only) get some surgical spirits and some plain cigarette filter tips.
cotton buds are useful, just don't have the scrubbing torque a filter tip can offer.
if using ciggy filters, make sure they are plain, and NOT menthol.
could react with the agents used.
as fur submerging, last resort.
the fluid could fill tight nooks and cracks (capacitors for one) so just hack away at it over time, scrubbing the rust free.

WD-40 contains penetrating oil (it also leaves behind lots of residue). Do not use it on electronics - it will sink into the copper layer and the end result will be further oxidation. ISOprop or naptha is a better choice. To be honest, this thing is way too far gone - you'd have to remove every rusted component and replace. Why are you even trying this?

I say go for it, it's free and as you've said you have nothing better to do. Full steam ahead, scrub that thing with a toothbrush and use pretty much anything. Non-phosphorus containing detergent, isopropyl, rubbing alcohol, maybe even use some baking soda and water to neutralise hell I'm just throwing out all the tools of the trade here considering your starting point.

If you use water in your approach you can always bake the PCB in a pre-heated (150C) but OFF oven.

Could be surface rust because as you said it actually turns on and didn't let the magic smoke out, good cleaning might give you a shiny PCB but the same problem however.

Ah hell might aswell give it a shot huh? Shoot some pics of the pcb after you give it a round or two of cleaning. Like to see how much of all that crud comes off of it.

so update. it's alive, I just need to get a new dvd drive and battery for the board. the starting program screen come up but it kinda sits there which i'm assuming is the battery, I tested it with a working dvd drive. I'll figure that out on the weekend

I have a similar problem with the monitor chassis in my New Astro City. Not as bad, but not looking good either. The monitor works well, and looks great, but if my room is cold enough, and I bang the cabinet the image shifts colours a bit. Once the monitor warms up again it's all good. Not a problem in the summer.

Here is a pic of my chassis. What do you guys think I should do?

Not rust flux. Clean with 99% iso + tooth brush. Touch up all solder joints as well. If you touch up after, clean with above again.

I don't think it's flux. I touched a q-tip to it and pulled some dust off. Smells terribly like old pennies, which leads me to believe it's rust. I could be wrong though.

My issue does not look the same at all. Your picture shows tinted, shiny, clear resin. My photo shows crusty orange rust.
