Instead of this maybe universal healthcare would help in reducing mass shootings by deranged individuals who didn't visit the doctor because of the cost.

Maybe they will use the tax money from the games to pay for that!

There’s not much I can say here that hasn’t been said before. What a crock of shit.

I don't give a fuck about letting people play shit games. If the government wanted to euthanize every COD player, I would fucking donate to the re-election campaign.

There were rumors after the Sandy Hook killings that the killer had been a big player of violent games.

Turned out he was more into Mario games and Dance Dance Revolution.

But the fact that that claim always seems to come up is revealing. When a younger person kills, there has to be an explanation, and a scapegoat. But most of all, there has to be a way to distract from actually doing anything about the underlying problems - like a lack of avenues for dealing with mental illness, gun accessibility or, well, anything else that might make a real difference. It's just easier to blame games and movies and call it a day, so it's an easy thing to demagogue it up on.

But I sense that the tide is starting to turn. Now that the average gamer age is somewhere in the thirties, it's getting a bit harder to make broad claims about censoring a field that more and more adults and parents are familiar with (and therefore know isn't making people into killers) even though politicians still hit on this. They may think the old standby issues never die. But this is one that shifting cultural realities and demographics may very well put to rest soon.

Hell, even most of the women I know from personal life and from work grew up with at least a hand me down video game system they have fond memories of, so even appealing to concerned mothers may not have legs on this issue anymore in quite the same ways as in the past.

I don't use violent video games to explain murder. Violent games like COD describe shitty subhumans though.

The taxing of things that politicians do not like is typical. Bullshit like unhealthy food tax (often soda), or "sin" tax, or extra taxes on firearms/ammo is something they pass to stick it to people who do something they do not agree with...

Wait...

Didn't Americans originally revolt over taxes?

Your perspective makes sense. Anyway, I don't see this happening, I just think it's really stupid. Pretty sure McDonalds kills more people in 1 week, then guns kill people in a year. Sure don't have the facts to back that up, but it seems pretty likely.

I'm surprised this didn't originate from Sweden. Pay more because whatever sounds Swedish to me. Sweden has inflated taxes on recordable media because of "piracy". Want to buy a DVD-R? Pay more, because everyone is a potential pirate.

Nobody thinks this will do anything, including the people who wrote the legislation.

It's just that the gun lobby is bigger than the game lobby, and politicians need to look busy right now.

Nobody thinks these feel-good taxes will accomplish anything....well, at least not anyone halfway intelligent.

Republicans and Democrats both have their bad/good points (more bad than good...but whatever)...one of the bad things about Dems is taxing shit they don't morally agree with.

Our government LOVES to do that shit. We've got this love affair with sin taxes, alcohol and cigarettes are just being priced out of the hands of everyday people. Especially cigarettes... $24 a pack what the fuck.

To top it off we used to be able to bring in a carton of smokes from overseas duty free but now we can only bring a single sealed pack of 25 and an open pack. Anything more means you pay duty on everything and a carton ends up costing you $380 which isn't even comparable to buying a carton here locally! the fuckin cheek.
