This past October, I was gonna use my old phat PS2 (modded to play burns) at PRGE for a light gun challenge. It's been in storage for several months before. When I tested it out, it wouldn't read discs at all, not even retail games. It was reading discs just fine before I put it away.

I have a spare stock phat one that needs new controller ports. I'm I able to take the working drive out of that PS2 and use it in my modded PS2?

The modded one's model is 35001 and the spare's is 50001.

They lasers have a different part number. SCPH-3x000x uses KHS-400B while SCPH-5x000x uses a KHS-400C. Supposedly, they're interchangeable, so as long as you can connect the laser, it should work. No harm in trying. I haven't done that particular swap, but from what i can tell after a quick search, you should be good with the spare you have.

I tried a KHS-400C in a SCPH-3x000x system and it would only read CD games, not DVDs. Maybe the replacement laser is bad, hard to say. I'm thinking of getting a KHC-400B just to rule out the possibility of incompatibility.

Did you open it up and clean the laser already?

I have yet to do that. Just been so damn busy with trying to get settled in my new house, the long ass commute to work is exhausting me both ways...I'm hoping that's all that needs to be done.

When you have a OG PS2 that has problems reading all 3 types od media, cd/dvd/dvd9 you will have to fiddle with the gain adjustment or just buy a new laser.
