edit again- the pay's pretty good? That's good to hear. From what I've been led to believe in the articles decrying the American prison system, the vast majority of American prison workers are paid far too little. From both what I've read and personal anecdotal experience, seems like a decent number of them are dudes who would be cops if they could get the cash together to get through an academy and get state certified. And the private prison companies, oh boy.

And one other question (though feel free not to answer if you don't want to, for whatever reason)- what's your actual position?

    Good thread!
nonono make no mistake, prison guards are paid garbage for what they have to do. It's insulting.

A man with a vision speaks! Too bad he is dead, a true warrior if you ask me.

Have you met anyone you actually believe is innocent of their charges? If so, do you treat them any different?

Going through the academy costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,000 or so. Not chump change. Then you get folks who can complete that, but for some reason can't come up with the last few hundred bucks to take the POST test to complete their certification, or do get it, let it lapse, then have to pay more to get it again. I've known several of the second type.

Ah, gotcha. You didn't sound like a guard. I had a friend whose husband was a guard at a privately run prison who I got to know, never known a psychologist.

How reformable is the average con?

Essentially he stated 1 in 3 African Americans males and 1 in 6 Latino Males will enter the prison system in their lifetime.

In America people tend to not want to leave their comfort zones to reach out and help those who need it before its too late. The really sad part was that most people he talked to at a very young age have reconcilled to the fact they will be locked up, and now is the time to "get theirs".

Viewing and convicting drug users as criminals, but alcoholism as a disease is just one example of how we need to change views as a society and not necessarily fill up our prisons while ruining someone's life. The war on drugs was a complete failure.

Americans need to get proximate to people in need, even in uncomfotable situations and surroundings to help a person get a chance to change their life. Will everyone respond to it? No, but better if they do before going to prison, rather than after.
Very much this. We have no problem shoving people into what you could consider a large farm for years at a time. Out of sight, out of mind, but they forget these people come home. Around 95-98% of inmates go home and will be leaving near you and next you. Yea, some did some bad shit, and so have a lot of people who have never gone to prison. I wish any inmate well. I want them to live happy productive lives....fewer people incarcerated, less need for prison, less money needed, and more people paying in. Incarceration makes us all poorer when you think about it that way.

It is also super tragic that the first time some of these people get ANY help is when in jail or prison (Jail = pre-trial and short sentences Prison = committed individuals usually serving over a year). True, some of that is due to their actions, but sometimes the access to help is scarce.

Yes, once. Was at a complex which multiple security levels on one grounds (so multiple prisons on one plot of land). I was a guest for the week, working in their psych department to help out. At the max, which is probably the scariest place I've ever been. We hear on the radio "we need....OH SHIT" and then the sirens started going off. Shit was popping off at the medium. So we are bolting out of the max to get to the medium. It is real surreal, the sirens are going off and you see hundreds of inmates dropping to the ground because if they don't in about a minute they get shot from the guard tower, and not rubber bullets, shoot to kill bullets. So we bolt on, hop in the back of a pick-up and fly to the medium. I should probably explain that depending on the system you work in, no matter your position you are also law enforcement, so here I am, a fucking psych intern (hadn't graduated yet) and I'm also allowed to carry OC spray (basically mace). So we get there and there are maybe 3-4 rival gang factions having a brawl. It was started to get controlled by the time we get there, but lot of weapons everywhere, drugs, and just carnage. You look to your right and there is a man with this giant rifle sitting in a pick-up ready to blast anyone that acts out. People walking around with these giant cannons that disperse OC.

Here is the thing that really gets you, and something I keep in mind in my job. We are insanely outnumbered. We have like....couple hundred inmates surrounded by maybe 100 staff. Sure we got weapons, but they are way better fighters and in way better shape. They can fuck you up in a heartbeat. In reality we have control of the situation because they let us have it. It's funny in hindsight, but at the time it was really unnerving.

Nah. Saw a few fights. Inhaled some OC once, but no murder.

Safety is always #1. Again, they can fuck you up in a moments notice. I've helped escort inmates on a few occasions, and...hopefully it makes sense, they are fucking physically dense, like a human brick. I workout 4 times a week, I feel like I'm in decent shape, but they are on something cosmic, it'd be like being punched by a train.

People who do white collar crimes get bullshit sentences, like 6 months for stealing millions of dollars. Guy with enough heroin for personal use gets way more.

So Dion would be my answer.

I don't know if crooked, but definitely lax and likely to be compromised. By that I mean, they let rules slide way too much or are way too comfy with the inmates. Even in my role I'm pretty impersonal. Some inmates will use ANY angle to cozy up to you to try and compromise you. It costs them nothing, and costs you your career. They may even work at it for years at a time. At the places I've been "crooked" staff are gone pretty fast.

I can tell you a fun story though....
Before I got to one of the institutions I interned at (40 hour weeks, basically it was full time) there was an officer who was maybe a year or two out from retirement. Decided to start smuggling drugs in for an inmate. The inmate asked what he wanted and the officer said he wanted to suck the inmates dick, and so this went on for a while until it was found out. Officer lost his job, pension, everything, and I think now drives a mail truck. Bear in mind this was the south so I think there was some repressed sexuality coming out in perverse ways.

And no, absolutely not. Most women in prison are not attractive due to years of drug use and so on. Not only that it's completely unethical and against my personal morals. I guess if I FOR SURE wanted Hep C

What is the best way to cook Jack Mackerel?
There was no immunity to cuckoo ideas on Earth.
Here was the reason human beings could not reject ideas because they were bad: "Ideas on Earth were badges of friendship or enmity.
Their content didn't matter. Friends agreed with friends, in order to express friendliness. Enemies disagreed with enemies, in order to express enmity.
