I've never had one but have been thinking about getting one.

Been looking at reviews and such, but still can't quite make my mind up.

I was curious what everyone here uses and if anyone uses an electric what kind. Also, the whole rotary vs foil deal, without every using one I've no idea what kind would be better.

I was bought one by my parents at the first sign of face fuzz and used them for years and years. Remember the remington advert, "as close as a blade or your money back"? Well, you don't see that anymore, presumably because they got sick of giving people their money back.

In short they're not as close as a razor, but they're perfect for a shave in the car on the way to work and the difference in closeness is only to touch, not to sight, so it's only you that will know.

I don't know about rotary vs foil either really, haven't noticed a difference, but I did buy a cheap one on holiday once when I forgot my own and fuck me it pulled the hairs out rather than cut, indescribably painful, avoid.

I use norelco multigroom at the lowest guard too remove any long hair and then I use a braun electric shaver. This avoids hair catching and get that smooth baby face shave.

If you want a close shave with no irritation, I'd avoid one all together. I have one, but it's really more of a beard trimmer body grooming tool. It has a foiled side, no way I would shave my face or neck with it though. I would definitely get razor bumps all over my neck.

I have had a rotary for years (no idea on the brand, it was a gift and I don't recall checking), but honestly, I only use it to quickly get rid of any trace of a mustache when I'm short on time. A razor and shaving cream is still the way to go as far as I'm concerned.

Hate em, I feel like the just pull the hell out of my hair, kinda like dull hair clippers. And they're expensive. Maybe there's some super nice one out there, but I ain't buying it. When I use to shave, I would just buy regular old razors, but get good shaving cream.

Will never be as close as hand razors.....
However,

If you really want an electric razor, then avoid the fancy looking tri flexi edge nonsense... I used one for part of my 20's during my drive to work.
Electric Foil Razors are the best option. These are the ones with the straight cyclinder along the edge. Usually 2-3.
They actually cut while the tri circle ones pull. I was amazed when I first switched to the foil from the tri cycle.

They last quite a while with proper maintenance, but it's obviously more work than the disposable blades.

Electric shavers suck. I use a Norelco for beard / stach trimming but the actual shaving has to be with a razor for me.

I tried a rotary one for a little while when I was in my 20's, and it always irritated my skin. My face would be red and swollen for hours. Like Renmauzo said, an old-fashioned razor & shaving cream can't be beat.

I use a decent Norelco electric shaver, but I don't shave all that often. I let my beard grow until it starts to get long enough to annoy me and then shave it. Usually every few weeks.

Fuck that shit. I use an old Gillette safety razor from way back in the day. You can get like 100 blades on Amazon for maybe $12. Close shave, no razor burn, what else can you ask for?

So here's my dilemma...

I look best with a 5 o'clock shadow. But my buzzer cuts way too close and the smallest guide is too large. So, I basically have to shave everything off, have the 5 o'clock shadow for a few days, then start over. If I used an electric razor, would I be able to have a perpetual 5 o'clock shadow? I'm assuming I'd have to actually shave my cheeks and neck with a standard blade to keep those clean shaven?

How thick are your hairs?

My stubble is too thick for any I've tried. Just went with a beard trimmer in the long run.

Very thick. Multiple times thicker than the strands of hair on my head or pits. I'm a greasy Mediterranean.

it is possible you could adjust an electric razor for this desired length.

Electric is kinda bullshit. Its good if you've got hair and want to trim it but for an actual close clean shave a good razor will always be needed.

I wish I knew what is wrong with my face. Every time I shave with a razor for smooth skin, my face is red the whole day. Makes me embarrassed.

My great grandfather was Greek giving me my last name and a lot of hair.

Buy a better-quality trimmer that allows you to more precisely dial in your desired length. Like the type of deal that a barber uses to give someone a fade.

Maybe it's the mercury/arsenic/chromium in the air/water/shaving cream/razor blades over there.

Have you tried different formulas for sensitive skin? You also might have an allergic reaction to certain metals that may be in the razors you've tried. I've known people allergic to gold, nickle, and tin, so that's a possibility. It might be worth consulting an epidermal specialist to run some tests. Good luck beating the burn 'Sage :)

That's the exact reason I quit shaving like 3 yars ago. I have a full beard now. It's especially harsh in the winter. Mostly around my mouth area it would burn like fire. Other people at work would tell me I had toothpaste on my face. It turned out it irritated my skin so bad it would turn orange with a weird white dry film. So I said screw it and never shaved again.

I think the redness and irritation is a combination of the alcohol, and the bacteria on the blade getting under the first layer or your skin the straight razor cuts off.
