    Hobby burnout

Tell me how long it took you to get over a hobby. Tell me how you sold your Coca Cola collection (or similar) and what you did with the cash.

So lets say I started buying shit in 2005 and started getting out in 2015... that's 10 years. Not that I had much but it funded PC upgrades and booze. If I was so far down the hole that the selling out bought me a holiday or a car It'd be a better story.

I lost interest in the arcade hobby after moving across the country, that and I realized I dont want to be associated with all of the mostly horrble eccentric people involved in it. I sold out and took nearly a year off work. I dont miss it or regret it in the least.

I used to be obsessed with porn - I'd watch it on my phone throughout the day and when I got home I'd stay up all night on my computer. It was taking a toll on me and so one day I decided to quit cold turkey -and now I am much better off.

I ended up moving to South Korea and starting a YouTube channel where I follow porn stars around and film their reaction to things they don't understand. It's going pretty great and I think this is a much constructive use of my time.

I sold off all my Laserdiscs back in 2010. My LD players kept having issues and it got annoying. No regrets and I banked about $3k.

I hit that same Hobby Burnout with my VG collection. Sold off Most of My Console Collection along with MVS in the last two years since I wasn't playing Much. Made a decent amount and money went towards a little of everything, Some other stuff I wanted to buy, Some Credit Cards, My kids 529 Plan, Savings. I don't like collecting anymore. Buy it, enjoy it for awhile, sell it, move on to something else.

I used to be really heavy into comic book collecting when I was younger, but I sold off the vast majority of my collection in my late teens and early twenties, keeping just the toy-related stuff (Spawn, G.I.JOE, Transformers, & Star Wars). I still pick up a trade paperback or single issue not and then, so I'm not completely weaned, but I don't consider myself a collector of them anymore.

I used to collect movies but i hardly ever do now. I just stream them now. Never sold them off, just used for display in the movie room.

I used to collect basketball cards as a kid, i would memorize every single player on what position they play, what team they play for & their scoring average. I stop buying because card packs got too expensive.

This was me collecting lots of DC Comics from the 60's through the 80's. Then Crisis on Infinite Earths happened and that told me it was time to move on. Plus the fact many of my favorite writers and artists were either retiring or passing away and the new ones couldn't come up with decent stories or spewed out crappy art any trained monkey could do.

I sold 95% of my books...still hold on to a few rarities from the 50's and 60's but now check them online (ReadComicOnline is a great place) since most books these days cost $3 or more.

i never grew out of my hobbies. i still love snk and 2d fighters as much as i did twenty years ago. i still read comic books and manga on the regular. i still watch anime on the regular. the only difference is, i no longer keep or spend any money on physical copies of any of those things.

i have a good amount of aes and mvs games which i haven't played for years, but i play neo games on mame everyday. i once had over 3000 comic books and whole collections of manga, but i sold or gave away all of them but still read comics and manga in digital form. i once had a whole shelf of anime vhs and dvd's which was all given away, but i still watch anime online all the time.

i never grew out of hobbies, but i've come to a stage in my life where i don't have the money or the room to decorate my living space with them.

I started collecting games in 1997 with school lunch money at the flea market on the weekends. Ended up with a few thousand games by the time I moved out of my parents in 2003. Back when solid titles like Zelda, Castlevania, and Little Sampson could be had for $10.00 any day of the week. I would say over the last 4-5 years it has been a constant purge. The last purge was earlier this year. Went from about 400 games, to only 65-ish of my absolute favorites that I have either completed, or invested a lot of time in and was unable to complete due to difficulty.

As for arcade stuff, with exception of Neo Geo, I got out of that for good around 2005. I got tired of my CPS1 games breaking. I purchased a Willow board, and it fucked up after about an hour of play. That was my cue to GTFO because it was getting ridiculous.

I have to say, every time it was incredibly hard to let go. Selling your collection you begin to see how bad of a mental addiction it really is. It get's to the point though that listing games is the hard part. Once they sell on eBay or wherever, it ends up being a huge relief that you get some extra space in your home back, and are actually financially stable for the first time in your life. One lesson I learned is that you rarely miss anything you sell, and it's almost all obtainable again if you do.

Basically my rule now is, only own two games you have not beat (one console, one handheld, never 2 RPG's), and just play them instead of juggling 7 different titles at once. Because if you own 50 games you never beat, you're going to have 30 games you never touched, and 20 halfway completed you will never finish.

I'm pretty happy sitting on 65 excellent cherry-picked titles right now that will always see rotation. I will probably buy games my entire life, as I am a gamer for life. I already accepted that a long time ago, but it's past the point where I just buy stuff because it's a "good" game, or it's "good for the money", or "Limited Edition". If that shit ain't 9/10 good I'm not buying it period.

I would say if you are considering selling off a large collection of something, sell pretty much all of it. You will be much happier. Just keep the stuff you are 100% certain will be used/played over and over.

I have an addictive personality and in my late teens early twenties I drank heavily and gambled more heavily. There were hobby and collecting aspects of both. I had built temporary walls out of different 6pack beer boxes. I'd collect coin cups (back when casinos spit out coins instead of receipts) from all the different casinos. Had 139 when I quit. (Minnesota and Wisconsin have a lot of them. My collection almost doubled after trips to LV and Laughlin.)

I made a concerted effort to get away from destructive habits and in the last 17 years or so have collected and learned (some) history of: coins, nutcrackers, beanie babies, swedish dala, black forest art (pyramids, smokers and cuckoos), football cards, power tools, pre-1900 hand tools, garden gnomes, 1940's and 50's movies, ukrainian pysanky eggs, russian nesting dolls, world religions, arcade games, ornithology, dendrology, and a few more.

I don't know that i've ever given any of my new hobbies up. Beanies would be the closest - I haven't bought one in 10 years, but I still have a collection of a few hundred, so wouldn't say i'm out of the hobby either.
Rare PROTO HUNTER; Looking For: Jak and Daxter, New Zealand Story (original build only), Ratchet and Clank 2, Tak and the Power of the JuJu

Found in 2017: Recalhorn, Dr. Yam Yam, Sunday Fundy
