    What's so awkward about that?
I guess you missed the "trident shaped monstrosity where you are forced to smash your meathooks together" comment I made...

The Dualshock was modeled after the N64's controller. Fact.

You do realize the original Playstation controller had no analog stick or rumble? The N64 controller had an analog stick, rumble paks and the C buttons for adjusting the camera. Then the Dualshock, and its short-lived predecessor the Dual Analog, come out with analog sticks, one for player control one for camera control and then added rumble. Facts.

Copying functionality and copying form are two entirely different things. I'll never dispute the add value of an analog stick, what I saying is that the shit form factor of the N64 killed it...which it did.

The overall design of the PS1 controller was set long before Nintendo made the N64 controller public so all Sony took was the idea of an analog stick and made a far superior product. The evidence of this is that the DS controller is still being used in a evolved state, 20 years after the release of the initial DS...whereas the N64 model is not.

Again...you like the thing, more power to you. I'm saying that comparing the N64 trident to a Dualshock, or proclaiming it a vast success is just silly.

    *EDIT*

I guess I just look at it this way, had the N64 controller been such a vast success, why did Nintendo redesign the thing for the Gamecube? I'm not talking a small remodel here either, the GC controller is a completely different setup.

This pic actually is pretty spot on:

Nintendo took risks, I'll tip my hat to them. Unfortunatly, "risk" meant they were going to make some serious mistakes, which they did that as well.

Also it's nowhere close to being in the top 5 worst controllers ever. Even if you only consider OEM controllers that were packed in. Worse: 5200, 7800, CDi, OG xbox and Intellivision are all worse.

The one thing the PlayStation controller has always lacked is comfort. How anyone can use those truncated handles without getting hand cramps is beyond me. The ONLY PSX controller that was good was the Dual Analog controller with its extended handles, the angle still sucked though.

Don't even get me started on trying to use the analog sticks and the triggers together, my hands can't extend that far.

Without Nintendo's Nintendo 64 controller the Playstation 2 would have never come to be. It is by far the the most misunderstood innovation in the disc based era.

Will the Playstation 5 will have a proper D-pad... Seriously, the Sony controllers are ergonomic abominations far beyond the ill-conceived N64 pad.

Wii/Wii U/Switch Pro Controllers are the best modern controllers by far IMO. But I digress... Maybe I will ask Santa for a N64. Madman made a convincing case in this thread so far

Agreed on most, but I'd say the 7800 and OG XBox controllers aren't any worse than the N64 controller. Dual Shock is worse than N64 imo, though. The analog sticks are just in ridiculously uncomfortable positions.

Main problem with the N64 is the crappy plastic-on-plastic action in the analog stick that results in the loose-ass sticks you almost always get with a used controller. It gets a passing grade in regards to comfort, but it's not amazing.

The 7800 and OG XBox controllers are fine. Never had any issues with them. The 7800 isn't the most comfortable controller I've ever used, but it's no worse than the 2600 joystick in my mind.

The big ass Duke Xbox controller gets a bad rep. I'm in the minority as far as that's concerned. No major issues for me.

The 7800 controller I tend to avoid. They should have rather packed all 7800's with the Euro Joypad.

WRT to the CD-i, it depends which controller version you're talking about. That thing that kinda looks like a TV remote control is garbage. The 3 button pad that came packaged with the Philips/Magnavox 450/550 systems, is not bad.

    Anyways,
So I've never previously played Daikatana. A local thrift store has a boxed PAL copy for around $10. Maybe when I get some time over this weekend I should go back and pick it up.

Good idea but I'm not sure it'd make the $25 minimum
