I've belonged to DeviantArt for 11 years now, and I still don't get what their whole llama badge thing is about. People give me llamas all the time, but for what reason? What purpose do they serve? Why should I care?

This is from their FAQ, but that still doesn't really explain things in my opinion:

People keep sending me llamas, what are they?
Llama badges are one of the many fun badges that can be found within the community. Deviants can send llama badges to other deviants and also purchase accessories for llamas using DeviantArt Points.

Apparently you can turn off the notifications, but you can't stop people from giving llamas to you even if you don't want them.

Whoops, I meant for this to go in creative, not suggestions. My apologies, please move this to creative when you have a moment, mods.

a lama badge is given to a member when they approve of the naked pictures he post of his wife.

Hey M-

I don't go to deviantart.

But I can only ascertain they are the equivalent of a facebook like.

Hope this helps,

@Bogard: Those aren't "naked pictures" they're "artistic nudes"; even though DeviantArt is full of perverts, we're perverts with high-cultured aesthetic standards!

@LoneSage: That's the thing, DeviantArt already has "like" and "follow artist" features (I use them all the time), that's part of the reason why the whole llama badge things makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Sage was kind of correct actually.

● What is the purpose of llama badges?
They are just something fun for the deviantART community. They are a way to thank someone for a favorite, comment, critique, pageview,
and whatever else you can imagine! They are a wonderful way to opening up meeting new deviants and interacting with them.

If you want to hide the badges you just mouse-over them and a red "X" appears, click that and you can hide them individually. I still don't think you can turn them off though unfortunately.

Thank you for that link, Beezlebub (I did look in DeviantArt's FAQs, but the page I found was much shorter and less detailed than the one you just shared). That finally does answer all of my questions, although I still find them rather pointless, as actually commenting on someone's artwork is much more meaningful than sending them silly llama sprites.

Kind of. DeviantArt technically doesn't allow porn, but there is an awful lot of nudity and suggestive stuff to be found there anyway. I've seen some very disturbing things after clicking on various DeviantArt members' usernames (whenever somebody favorites something I made or follow me, or, yes, give me a damn llama badge, I always click on their names to see what kind of artwork they produce).
